If krnlprov.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL. The safest route is to install pending updates, run DISM, then run System File Checker so Windows can restore the correct WMI component for your build and architecture.
What this file actually does
krnlprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file associated with Windows Management Instrumentation, usually shortened to WMI. Its internal description is WMI, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
WMI is the Windows management system that lets applications, administrative tools, scripts and monitoring software query information about the operating system, hardware, processes and events. Microsoft documents Krnlprov.dll as the provider DLL associated with WMI classes such as Win32_ModuleTrace, alongside the related Krnlprov.mof file that defines WMI classes.
A WMI provider normally includes a DLL and a Managed Object Format file. Windows provider files are generally stored below:

On a typical 64-bit Windows installation, the expected path is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemkrnlprov.dll
Microsoft’s WMI architecture documentation explains how provider DLLs and MOF files fit into WMI. Its Win32_ModuleTrace documentation specifically associates the class with Krnlprov.dll and Krnlprov.mof.
The exact file version depends on the installed Windows release, servicing level and architecture. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components can use redirected system locations, so do not assume every copy belongs in System32. Microsoft servicing tables show separate x86 and x64 versions for some Windows releases, with other architectures also supported across Windows versions. The installed Windows image, not a third-party file archive, determines the correct copy.
What the error usually means
These messages are common wording for this type of failure:

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending update can contain the correct version of a protected Windows component. Complete this step before replacing files manually.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
- Retry the affected program.
If Windows Update reports an error, restart once more and try again. Do not stop at an update that is merely downloaded but waiting for a restart.
If the application still reports krnlprov.dll, continue with DISM and SFC. Those tools repair Windows using Microsoft’s component-servicing mechanisms rather than guessing which DLL version belongs on the system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the main repair for a missing, damaged or incorrectly serviced krnlprov.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for protected files.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause.
When DISM completes successfully, leave the elevated Command Prompt open and run:

Interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations means SFC found no protected-file corruption. The application itself, a dependency or WMI may still be the problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means Windows repaired protected files. Restart, then test the application again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means the repair is incomplete. Retry DISM, inspect the CBS log, or use a matching repair source.
- DISM failed to find the source files means Windows Update could not provide a suitable repair source. Use installation media or another matching Windows source rather than downloading
krnlprov.dllby itself.
Restart after SFC reports repairs, then launch the affected program again.

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance documents the commands and order. Its DISM image repair documentation explains additional health checks and repair sources.
Fix 3: Use a matching Windows repair source
Use this only if DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update.
You need a Windows installation source that corresponds closely to the installed edition and build. An unsuitable source can fail to repair the image or leave components mismatched.

- Run:

- Restart Windows and test the application.
If you do not have a matching source, do not guess at the edition or copy a DLL from another computer. Proceed to System Restore or an in-place repair installation.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus quarantine is possible, but a missing-file message alone does not prove that Defender removed krnlprov.dll.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the WMI directory or
krnlprov.dll. - Run a Full scan before restoring anything.
- If malware is found, follow Windows Security’s recommended removal steps.
- Restore the file only when you have verified that the detection is a false positive and that the file is the genuine Microsoft Windows component.
- Restart and test the affected application.
Do not repeatedly restore a file that Defender immediately quarantines again. That may indicate a genuine threat, a modified file or an unresolved security problem. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.
If the file exists, right-click it, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer. A file’s presence in C:WindowsSystem32wbem alone does not prove that it is genuine.

Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows passes DISM and SFC and only one program fails, the program may be damaged or may be reporting a dependency problem incorrectly.
Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, if available.
Reset can remove the application’s local data, so review the warning before using it.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer instructions.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer or launcher. If the application is a game, use its official Verify files or equivalent feature before reinstalling the entire program.
There is no verified basis for installing Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX specifically to obtain krnlprov.dll. It is a Windows component, not a separately distributed runtime. Install another runtime only when the application’s official requirements or its own error message calls for it.
Fix 6: Check WMI only when the failure is broader than one DLL
Do not reset the WMI repository merely because an error names krnlprov.dll. Repository repair addresses WMI consistency; it does not replace a missing protected Windows binary.
Use this path when several WMI-dependent tools fail, WMI queries return errors, monitoring software cannot read system information, or Windows management functions are broadly broken.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
winmgmt /verifyrepository
- Read the result.
If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not salvage or reset it. Continue with application repair, dependency investigation or Windows diagnostics.
If Windows reports that it is inconsistent, run:
winmgmt /salvagerepository
- Restart Windows.
- Test the WMI-dependent application or tool.
winmgmt /resetrepository is more disruptive because it resets the repository to its initial state. Do not use it as a routine missing-DLL command. Back up important data and investigate the cause before considering it.
Microsoft documents these commands in the winmgmt reference.
Fix 7: Check related drivers when the error follows hardware changes
A driver is not the normal source of krnlprov.dll, but a damaged driver or failed device-management component can trigger WMI errors or make one application fail after a hardware change.

If checking dozens of devices manually is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies driver issues, while installation is performed by the full version, and it is not required if the manufacturer’s driver is available.
Windows Features: what not to toggle
krnlprov.dll is part of Windows and is not normally restored by enabling a checkbox in Windows Features.
You can inspect optional components through:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Review installed components.
On some systems, legacy applications separately require a Windows feature such as .NET Framework 3.5. Enable that only when the application’s documentation or its own error specifically requires it. Do not enable or disable unrelated features in an attempt to replace krnlprov.dll.
For this file, Windows Update, DISM and SFC are the appropriate component-repair mechanisms.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings and installed programs while leaving personal files unchanged. It does not replace a backup, and it will not help if no suitable restore point exists. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading krnlprov.dll is the wrong repair
Avoid DLL download pages, file-sharing links and copies supplied by strangers. A manually downloaded file can be:
- Modified or malicious.
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong architecture.
- Missing its related MOF or servicing context.
- Unable to load because a dependency is missing.
- Rejected with a “not designed to run on Windows” error.
- Capable of causing further component-servicing problems.
Copying a file into System32wbem also bypasses Windows ownership, servicing and version checks. The correct repair is to make Windows restore its own protected component.
Do not use registry cleaners or paid “DLL repair” utilities that promise to replace every missing file. They can obscure the original cause and make later repairs harder.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 krnlprov.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that explicitly expose registration procedures. It is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. WMI providers also involve provider metadata, MOF files and WMI repository registration, so registering the DLL blindly is not equivalent to repairing WMI.

If an official application installer specifically instructs you to register one of its DLLs, follow that application’s instructions. For krnlprov.dll, use Windows servicing and WMI diagnostics instead. Microsoft’s DLL registration guidance explains why registration is conditional.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
First, restart and run Windows Update again. Then:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
- Review the result.
- Retry
/RestoreHealth, using a matching source if necessary. - Run:
sfc /scannow
- Review the SFC details in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If corruption returns, investigate storage errors, unexpected shutdowns and malware. Back up important files before deeper recovery work.
If Windows remains damaged, use Windows Recovery options or perform an in-place repair installation with matching installation media. A repair installation is preferable to deleting system folders or replacing individual DLLs. If the computer cannot boot reliably, use another working computer to prepare official Windows installation media and follow Microsoft’s recovery instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Is krnlprov.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows component when it is the expected file in the Windows WMI directory and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. Location alone is not proof of authenticity, so scan the system and inspect the signature if you are unsure.
Is krnlprov.dll part of Windows or a third-party runtime?
It ships with the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is associated with WMI. It is not a separately installed Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package or known third-party runtime.
Should I download the latest version?
No. There is no single universal version for every Windows installation. The correct file is determined by the installed Windows build, edition, architecture and servicing state. Let Windows Update, DISM and SFC restore it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Where should the file be?
The normal 64-bit location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemkrnlprov.dll
32-bit Windows components can use redirected locations on 64-bit systems. Do not move or copy files based only on a path shown in an error dialog.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency failed to load. Run DISM and SFC, inspect Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor, and identify the calling application. The actual cause may be application damage, WMI inconsistency, malware or storage corruption.
Do I need to enable WMI in Windows Features?
Normally, no. WMI is a Windows management component, not a feature you restore by toggling random optional-feature checkboxes.
When should I repair the WMI repository?
Only when WMI itself is broadly failing, such as failed WMI queries or multiple management tools reporting errors. Verify the repository first with winmgmt /verifyrepository; do not reset it just because krnlprov.dll appears in a message.
