“This application failed to start because kzlw20.dll was not found.” The kzlw20.dll error usually means an older application cannot find one of its own program files, not that Windows is missing a system component.
The safest fix is to identify the application requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or trusted vendor media. Do not begin by downloading a loose DLL or copying it into a Windows folder.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest path:
- The error names an application: repair or reinstall that application first.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: check Windows Security’s Protection history.
- The application was moved, restored from backup, or partially updated: reinstall it into its original folder.
- The application is very old: try compatibility settings or run it in a suitable virtual machine.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or “entry point not found”: suspect a damaged, incompatible, or wrong-version DLL rather than a simple missing file.
- The application still fails after reinstalling: investigate missing dependencies and record the exact executable and complete error message.
- Several unrelated programs are failing: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC, then consider System Restore.
What is kzlw20.dll
kzlw20.dll is identified in public file metadata as the Kazoo Toolkit LightWorks DLL, part of Kazoo Toolkit from LightWork Design Ltd. Kazoo was historical graphics technology licensed to application developers, so the file may have been bundled inside an older graphics, CAD, design, or visualization program.
It is not a Windows component. It is not part of Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a normal Windows driver package. There is no verified current Microsoft or LightWork standalone download page for this individual DLL.

Public metadata reports the file as a 32-bit Win32 library and associates it with an older Kazoo Toolkit build. Those version and size details come from file indexes rather than a currently available official installer, so they should not be treated as proof that every copy with this filename is interchangeable.
Why a 64-bit PC can need it
A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit desktop applications. A 32-bit application needs 32-bit libraries, and a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
That means a 64-bit Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer may correctly need a 32-bit kzlw20.dll. The correct copy normally belongs beside the application that loads it, not automatically in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Microsoft explains the behavior of 32-bit applications and file-system redirection in its documentation on running 32-bit applications and the file system redirector.
Find the application that needs the file
The file name alone does not identify which program installed it. No reliable public inventory lists every application that may have bundled Kazoo Toolkit.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with the error window:
- Note the application name in the title bar.
- Read the first line of the message and copy the complete wording.
- Select OK, then check whether a launcher, installer, or shortcut identifies the program.
- If the error appears from a shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target and Start in.
- Write down the executable name and its full path.
If the message appears during startup, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Check Startup apps for the program that triggers the error. You can also search File Explorer for the application’s executable, but avoid deleting or replacing files while investigating.
The exact executable matters. A library with the right filename can still be the wrong build for that application.
Fix 1: Repair the parent application
Repair is the least disruptive option because it may restore missing files without removing settings.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application.
If Repair is not available, open the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall, or continue with the classic Control Panel method below. Some older desktop programs provide their own repair command instead.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
For traditional desktop software:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
Start the application after repair. If the same message returns, the repair source may not contain the original files, or the installation may be too damaged for an in-place repair.

Fix 2: Reinstall from the original installer
Reinstalling the parent program is the most likely definitive fix for this file.
Before uninstalling, locate the original installer, installation DVD, downloaded setup package, or trusted vendor media. If the program uses a launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan files command instead of manually replacing files.
Then:
- Close the affected application and its launcher.
- Back up any documents, templates, or custom settings.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Run the original installer using Run as administrator.
- Install the program to its normal location.
- Apply updates supplied by the application’s publisher.
- Launch the program again.
If the installer offers an architecture choice, use the version intended for the original application. Do not replace a 32-bit application library with a 64-bit file that happens to have the same name.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If reinstalling fails, temporarily note the exact installer error. A failed installation can point to permissions, missing prerequisites, blocked files, or a damaged installation source.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a program library. Do not assume that a quarantine event is a false positive, particularly if the file came from an unofficial download.
To inspect Defender:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with the affected application.
- Check the file path, detection name, and action taken.
If the file was removed and you can verify that it came from the application’s original installer, the safer approach is to reinstall that application from trusted media. This restores the complete, matching program rather than returning one isolated file.
Only restore a quarantined item when its origin is clear and the security vendor’s assessment supports that decision. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can expose the device if the detection is accurate. Do not disable antivirus protection just to make an unknown DLL run.
Fix 4: Do not copy kzlw20.dll into System32
Copying a file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is usually the wrong repair for an application-private DLL.
Windows commonly searches the application directory before system locations. A DLL placed in a system directory can:
Rank #3
- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Have no effect if the program requires a different copy
- Create a version conflict
- Cause the wrong application to load it
- Introduce DLL-preloading or binary-planting risk
- Hide the real problem, such as a missing dependency
Microsoft documents the DLL search order and DLL security considerations. Restore the file through the parent application’s installer instead.
Fix 5: Avoid random DLL download sites
A matching filename does not prove that a download is authentic, licensed, compatible, or safe. A loose download may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or require other files that are also missing. It often fails because the damaged installation is the real problem.

- The original application installer
- The application publisher’s official download or support channel
- Original installation media
- A launcher’s built-in repair or verification feature
- A verified organizational software archive
Do not use a hash, version label, or file size from an unofficial file index as proof that a replacement is suitable.
Fix 6: Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes Windows reports kzlw20.dll even though the actual failure is a second library that kzlw20.dll needs. This is more likely when the message says:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- “The specified module could not be found”
Reinstall the complete parent application first. Then check its documentation for required runtimes. Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages only when the application’s publisher specifies the required package and architecture. Microsoft notes that the correct runtime depends on the application’s build toolchain in its guidance on supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Do not install every runtime package at random. That adds software without proving which dependency the program requires.

An application old enough to use Kazoo Toolkit may have trouble with modern Windows even after its files are restored.
To try compatibility mode:
- Right-click the application’s executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version suggested by the application’s documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
If the program requires elevated access, use Run this program as an administrator only when necessary. Avoid broadly disabling security protections or using compatibility settings on unknown executables.
For unsupported software, test it in a backed-up environment or an appropriate virtual machine. Keep important files outside the test environment and avoid connecting obsolete software to sensitive systems unless required.

Fix 8: Update a driver only when the application requires it
A graphics or display driver is not the normal source of kzlw20.dll, and updating a driver will not replace this application library. Consider a driver update only if the application publisher identifies a graphics-driver requirement or the failure also involves rendering, display initialization, or a device error.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which installed drivers are stale, avoiding the manual work of hunting through device categories and version pages; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the Kazoo Toolkit application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing DLL.
Fix 9: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
System repair is less likely to restore kzlw20.dll because the file is not a protected Windows component. It can help if Windows servicing corruption is preventing the application from installing or launching correctly.
Run DISM before SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application again.
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally restore an arbitrary third-party DLL from Kazoo Toolkit. Microsoft’s instructions for this sequence are in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running repair commands by showing what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed through the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns kzlw20.dll.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after a cleanup tool, update, driver installation, or software change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore normally preserves personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft describes this process in its System Restore guidance.
On Windows 11, a further repair option is Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now, where that option is available. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported.
When regsvr32 is appropriate
Do not run:
regsvr32 kzlw20.dll
A normal application-support or rendering DLL does not need registration merely because it is missing. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse it only when the application’s own documentation explicitly identifies this particular file as a registered component and gives the correct procedure. Otherwise, errors such as “module not found,” “entry point not found,” or an architecture error will not repair the application. Microsoft documents regsvr32 and its intended use.

The key question is which executable is requesting kzlw20.dll. Once that program is identified, its original installer is usually more useful than any standalone DLL replacement.
FAQ
Is kzlw20.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with the third-party Kazoo Toolkit technology from LightWork Design Ltd.
Which program installed kzlw20.dll?
The filename identifies the historical toolkit, not every application that may have bundled it. The program named in the error, shortcut target, or launcher is the best way to identify the parent application.
Should I download kzlw20.dll?
No. Use the original application installer or trusted vendor media. Random DLL downloads can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible build.
Does the file belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
Not automatically. A 32-bit application normally loads its private DLL from the application directory. Let the application installer place it.
Why does the error appear on 64-bit Windows?
A 64-bit Windows system can run 32-bit applications, and those applications require 32-bit libraries.
Recommended Free Tools
Will SFC restore kzlw20.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while kzlw20.dll is a third-party application file.
Do I need to register the DLL?
Normally no. regsvr32 is relevant only when the application explicitly requires this DLL to be registered as a COM or ActiveX component.
What if reinstalling does not help?
Check Defender Protection history, confirm that the installer matches the application’s architecture, investigate application prerequisites, and test compatibility settings. If the error says “entry point not found” or “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect a mismatched or damaged build rather than a simple missing file.
