There is no single reagent or grade that suits every laboratory task. Choose against the actual procedure and intended use, then check the product label and manufacturer’s safety data sheet (SDS) for hazards, handling, storage, and disposal requirements.
What counts as a laboratory reagent?
“Laboratory reagent” is a broad term for materials used in laboratory work. The University of Nevada, Reno’s chemical hygiene guide gives buffers and dilute acids as examples. A reagent’s name alone does not tell you whether it is appropriate for a particular experiment, analysis, or process.
How to choose a reagent for a task
Start with the protocol or analytical method, not a generic list of chemicals. Compare candidate products against the requirements of that specific work:
- Identity and composition: Confirm that the compound or mixture matches the method.
- Concentration: Check the required concentration and whether the supplied product is ready to use or needs preparation.
- Grade or purity specification: Match the stated specification to the procedure. There is no universal grade-selection rule for all laboratory work.
- Intended use: Verify that the product is represented for the analytical or experimental application you plan to perform.
- Compatibility: Consider the procedure and the other materials involved, including what happens during mixing, dilution, heating, or reaction.
- Safety and management requirements: Review the hazards, handling precautions, storage conditions, and disposal instructions before selecting and using the product.
If the protocol does not specify a required identity, concentration, grade, or intended use, resolve that uncertainty with the method owner or your laboratory’s safety or technical contact rather than assuming that similarly named products are interchangeable.

How to assess reagent hazards and risks
Read the product label and manufacturer’s SDS before use. The American Chemical Society (ACS) recommends RAMP: Recognize hazards, Assess risks, Minimize risks, and Prepare for emergencies. Use it to organize your review, alongside your institution’s procedures and the reagent-specific instructions.
Recognize hazards
Identify the chemical and its hazards from the container label and SDS. Cornell Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) points readers to SDS Section 2 for hazard information. Check the actual product documentation rather than inferring hazards from a familiar name or from another product’s SDS.

Assess the way the work will be done
Risk is not determined by chemical identity alone. Cornell EHS identifies concentration, physical state, processes, reactions, and storage conditions as relevant factors. Consider what the procedure involves—for example, heating, dilution, or mixing—and how those conditions affect the risks and precautions for the specific reagent.
Minimize risks and prepare for emergencies
Follow the SDS and local laboratory procedures for the work. Before starting, know the applicable controls and precautions, and how your laboratory expects you to respond to an emergency. RAMP is a framework for this assessment; it does not replace chemical-specific instructions or local rules.

How to label, store, and track reagents
Use the supplier’s label and SDS to determine product-specific storage and handling requirements. Keep containers appropriately labeled and in good condition, segregate incompatible materials, maintain a current inventory, and inspect stored reagents and containers periodically. ACS discusses organizing storage around physical properties and intrinsic hazards identified by hazard statements; the University of Nevada, Reno guide also describes labeling, periodic checks, and inventory practices. Cabinet arrangements and other detailed storage rules vary by institution and reagent, so do not treat one laboratory’s local rules as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “research-use-only” means for diagnostic products
For analyte-specific reagents, the FDA’s 2007 FAQ describes products labeled “research use only” (RUO) as being in the laboratory research phase and not represented as effective in vitro diagnostic products. An RUO label should not be taken as a claim that the reagent is suitable for clinical diagnosis. Check the current labeling and applicable requirements for the exact product and proposed use; that FAQ is a starting point, not a complete answer to every current regulatory question.
