LaNorris Sellers had not been reported benched as of October 3, 2026. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that South Carolina backup Cutter Woods had received more first-team practice reps that week and could replace Sellers if his passing struggles continued. That was a possible change in playing time—not confirmation that Sellers had lost the starting job.
Will LaNorris Sellers be benched?
The October 3 report described a contingency: Woods could play if Sellers continued to struggle. It did not report an announced starter change. An earlier September 30 report also presented Woods as a possible option, while coach Shane Beamer declined to identify which quarterbacks were taking first-team reps. Beamer said, “Every position is accountable. Every week in practice there is competition that’s ongoing at our place, no matter the position.” Saturday Down South, October 3; AOL republishing The State, September 30
The October 3 story was published on the day South Carolina was scheduled to play Kentucky. The reports establish increased scrutiny and a reported practice shift; they do not establish who started or played in that game.
Why is Sellers’ starting role under pressure?
Passing consistency and turnovers
The September 30 report said Sellers had missed open receivers, struggled to see the field and put the ball in danger during South Carolina’s first two SEC losses. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles said, “I wish I could put my finger on it exactly,” then said he did not think Sellers had physical limitations. Briles said Sellers needed to trust himself, see the field and know where his teammates were supposed to be. The report also cautioned that Sellers was not the only reason for the losses.

Recent scoring and season totals
Saturday Down South reported on October 3 that Sellers had thrown six touchdown passes and four interceptions. It also reported that South Carolina had scored 39 points over its previous seven quarters, with no touchdown against Alabama until the Crimson Tide led 35-3. These are the current-season figures cited in that report, not career or historical totals.
In the September 30 report, South Carolina was 2-2 overall and 0-2 in SEC play; the article said the team had gone more than a calendar year without an SEC win. Those records describe the team at the time of that report.

Who is Cutter Woods, and what has he shown?
Woods was South Carolina’s backup quarterback in the reports. The September 30 article said he had appeared in three games that season, most recently against Alabama, and had played sparingly over his two seasons at South Carolina. Against Kent State, he completed 9 of 14 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
That record gives coaches a reason to consider Woods, but it is limited evidence: the cited report does not describe him as an established starter or provide a like-for-like body of game experience with Sellers. Briles said, “Everybody’s competing all the time. There’s always a chance for anybody to be able to get out there. If we feel like that what was what gave us the best chance to win the game, then that’s what we do.”

How does this compare with Sellers’ earlier seasons?
The Associated Press reported that South Carolina went 9-4 in Sellers’ first season in control, then 4-8 the following season. Its August 25, 2026, account gave these figures for those seasons:

What would confirm a quarterback change?
More practice reps are a meaningful signal, but a reported increase does not by itself establish a new starter. The clearest confirmation would be a coach naming Woods the starter or game coverage confirming that he took over. Until then, the accurate description is that Woods was reportedly getting more first-team work and could see action if Sellers continued to struggle.
Sellers described his approach to rebuilding confidence this way: “But it’s like, if you lose a bunch of games, that’s going to happen to everybody. So it’s about attacking every day. If you’re prepared, that’ll handle the confidence.” That is his stated mindset, not evidence of a confirmed lineup decision.
