League of Legends is free to download for Windows from Riot Games. Use Riot’s official League download page, install the Riot Client, sign in with a Riot account, and let the client patch the game. Current Windows installations also use Riot Vanguard, and the live game requires graphics support for DirectX 11 feature level 11_0.
This guide covers the safe installer route, account and restart requirements, compatibility checks, game modes, and practical fixes for common launch and patching problems.
Download League of Legends safely
Open Riot’s genuine download page: leagueoflegends.com/en-us/download/. Select Download for Windows and save the installer somewhere you can find, such as your Downloads folder.

You do not need Steam, Epic Games Store, a torrent, or a third-party “free download” site. Avoid search advertisements or mirrors that imitate Riot branding, as they can provide outdated or modified files.

Windows installation steps
- Run the installer you downloaded and approve the Windows permission prompt.
- Allow the Riot Client and League files to install. The default League folder is commonly
C:Riot GamesLeague of Legends, although you may choose another location. - Sign in with an existing Riot account or create one. Your Riot ID is separate from your Windows username.
- Let the client complete its initial download and patch. Do not close it while files are being verified.
- Restart Windows if the installer or Vanguard requests it. A restart is part of the normal anti-cheat setup.
- Launch League from the Riot Client, choose the correct region, and complete any display, input, or tutorial prompts.
- Use Practice Tool or a beginner-friendly normal queue before trying ranked play.
Patch sizes and interface labels change, so the exact screens may not match older guides. For an existing installation, Riot’s patcher troubleshooting information can help you locate logs in or near the game folder: Riot’s updated client patcher article.
Current Windows requirements
Requirements checked: 24 September 2026. Riot can change supported operating systems, processor features, memory, storage, and graphics hardware. Check the current Riot Support requirements information immediately before installing rather than relying on an old specification table.

Riot’s later requirements changes mean older lists quoting figures such as 2 GB RAM or 16 GB storage should not be treated as the definitive 2026 specification. If the Play button is disabled or your adapter lacks feature level 11_0, a driver update may not be sufficient and a hardware upgrade may be necessary. Riot Client and Vanguard explained
The Riot Client handles account login, launching, patching, and access to Riot games. The League client is the in-game lobby used for parties, matchmaking, champion selection, and settings. The installed game files contain the playable client and maps.
Riot Vanguard is Riot’s anti-cheat system for the live Windows game. Riot documents a Windows service and driver component; driver conflicts or a pending restart can stop League from starting. Read Riot’s Vanguard retrospective for the technical background. Do not repeatedly relaunch before completing a requested restart.
What the PC version includes
- Summoner’s Rift: the traditional competitive 5v5 map, with lanes, jungle objectives, towers, and champion roles.
- ARAM: a faster, single-lane match with random champion selection.
- Normal matchmaking: team games without ranked progression, useful for learning.
- Ranked: competitive matchmaking and progression intended for players who understand the basics.
- Practice Tool: a controlled space for testing champions, items, damage, and mechanics.
- Custom games: private sessions for friends or practice.
- Rotating and featured modes: temporary queues and special rules that Riot may add, alter, extend, or remove.
League is a mouse-and-keyboard, team-based multiplayer game built around champions with distinct abilities and roles. It is a live service: balance changes, new content, client updates, and queue availability arrive through patches. Riot’s patch notes illustrate why no static list of modes should be considered permanent.
What is free, and what is optional?
The base game is free to download and play online, but a Riot account is required. The download does not mean every champion, skin, cosmetic, or progression item is automatically unlocked. Optional purchases exist separately from installation; no purchase is needed to follow this guide.

Teamfight Tactics (TFT) is a separate auto-battler that can be available through the League ecosystem. It is not the standard 5v5 League game. The Public Beta Environment (PBE) is also separate from the normal live client: it is for testing upcoming content and may be unstable, incomplete, or restricted. Use Riot’s PBE page only if you specifically want a test environment.

Riot Client will not open
Restart Windows, install pending Windows and graphics-driver updates, and try the client again. Check that your security software is not blocking Riot processes, but do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If the problem continues, use Riot Support’s current repair and log-collection instructions.
The game asks for a restart
Save your work and restart Windows before trying another launch. Vanguard may need to load its service and driver during startup. Repeatedly closing and reopening the client without restarting usually does not resolve this state.

- Open Start and search for Exploit protection.
- Open Windows Security’s Exploit protection settings.
- Under System settings, set the listed protections to Use default, including Control flow guard, Data Execution Prevention, Mandatory ASLR, Bottom-up ASLR, High entropy ASLR, SEHOP, and Validate heap integrity.
- Under Program settings, remove custom entries for Riot Games, Riot Vanguard, or Riot titles.
- Restart the PC and launch League.
These are not instructions to turn Windows security off. They restore defaults and remove conflicting overrides. See Riot’s VAN 9002 support article; submit a ticket if the error remains.
Compatibility Mode is enabled
Riot removed support for launching League in Windows Compatibility Mode. Open the executable or shortcut properties, clear Run this program in compatibility mode, apply the change, and relaunch. Riot’s client may offer to disable it automatically; accept that change. See the patch notes for the policy change.
Patching or installation fails
Confirm that the drive has room for both the installed files and temporary patch data, then restart the client and Windows. Check your connection and security software without leaving protection disabled. Keep the installation directory available so you can collect logs; Riot Support can use those logs to diagnose a failed patch.
Shared, school, or managed PCs
Administrative policies, blocked services, driver-install restrictions, or network filtering can prevent Riot Client or Vanguard from working. Ask the administrator rather than attempting to bypass those controls. Riot does not guarantee compatibility with every virtual machine, emulator, or ARM-based Windows configuration.
Should you install League?
League is a strong fit if you want a free, competitive multiplayer game with a large champion roster, regular updates, and a long learning curve. It is a poor fit if you need an offline campaign, dislike frequent patches, cannot install a Windows anti-cheat component, or expect every champion and cosmetic immediately.
