In December 2023, shortly after LEGO Fortnite launched, players reported two distinct problems: crashes or forced exits in caves, and “High Complexity Area” warnings that could disable building or disrupt a world. Epic later patched several related cave-spawning, stability, and rejoining issues, but its published notes do not confirm that every complexity-warning scenario was eliminated. The reports are a launch-era incident, not evidence that the same problem remains widespread in 2026.
What players were experiencing
Cave crashes and repeated disconnections
In reports covered on December 11, 2023, some players said entering or mining in caves caused a freeze, crash, or forced exit. Some described a loop: after rejoining, they would appear in or near the affected cave and encounter the problem again while trying to leave. The report documents player accounts, not a confirmed technical cause or a failure affecting every cave. A message that looks like a disconnection also does not establish whether the client crashed, the network connection dropped, or a world-state or spawn problem was involved. Complexity warnings and blocked building
Players also described warnings that an area had become too complex. Reported effects included building being disabled, prompts to remove construction or move elsewhere, freezing, or being removed from a world. Some said the warning appeared even when the visible structure did not seem especially large. The original coverage records these reports; it does not establish that every case shared one cause. Community accounts mentioned different behavior across platforms, with older consoles and Nintendo hardware appearing in some reports alongside PC accounts. These are self-reported experiences, not a controlled comparison, so they do not show that the issue was exclusive to consoles or to any particular device. Does “High Complexity Area” mean there is a build limit?
It indicates a local construction-density safeguard, but the available official guidance does not give a universal maximum number of builds per world. Epic says construction can count toward the limit even when connected pieces are not immediately beside the structure a player is looking at. That supports the existence of a local limit or safeguard, not a simple fixed build-count cap. Epic’s guidance does not specify an exact threshold or establish that the calculation is identical across platforms and world conditions. Players also reported that warnings could change or disappear after restarting or moving, but those accounts are anecdotal and do not explain the mechanism. What Epic later fixed—and what remains unconfirmed
The December 11, 2023 report said Epic had not publicly addressed these two specific complaints at that time. That is a statement about the situation described in that report, not Epic’s position today. December 11, 2023 coverage
Epic’s v28.10 patch notes, published January 23, 2024, listed fixes for several adjacent problems: spawning inside or beneath buildings, spawning on top of a cave after exiting one, trouble rejoining worlds quickly or consistently, general crash and loading-screen stability, and large builds breaking apart or falling through the ground. Epic’s v28.30 notes, published February 22, 2024, listed a fix for sometimes being unable to rejoin a world, a fix for objects disappearing from caves, and fixes for spawning inside building foundations, snow, or other unintended locations. What to try if the warning appears
- Stop adding pieces in the affected area. Continuing to build into a warning zone may make it harder to tell whether the area has stabilized.
- Move away and let the world settle, then restart the game. Players reported that moving or restarting sometimes cleared warnings, but neither action is a guaranteed fix. Player reports
- Reduce local construction density. Spread structures farther apart, replace clusters of small pieces with larger pieces where practical, and remove unused builds, debris, decorations, or complex moving constructions. What to try if a crash prevents you from rejoining
- Fully close and relaunch Fortnite. If that does not help, restart the PC or console.
- Check LEGO Fortnite’s server status. A service issue can complicate attempts to rejoin, though it does not by itself diagnose a cave or world-specific problem.
- On PC, verify the game files. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends following platform-specific steps, reinstalling Fortnite if necessary, and contacting support if the issue continues. Epic’s crash and world-selection troubleshooting
- If possible, ask another player to try entering the world. This can help establish whether the issue affects one player’s client or blocks access for others; it is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed way to move a trapped character.
- Do not delete the world as an early fix. Starting over was suggested in launch-era player coverage as a last resort, but that coverage did not establish that it fixes the underlying problem. December 11, 2023 coverage
Changing platform or connection can help isolate where a problem occurs, but there is no evidence here that either is a guaranteed cure. A cave crash is not automatically a Wi-Fi fault, and a cave-related failure is not necessarily the same defect as a complexity warning.

What to include in a support report
Record the details before retrying if possible, especially when the failure is intermittent. Epic advises searching support with the exact error wording and consulting its known-issues resources and in-game bug-report process. Epic technical-support guidance
- Exact warning or error text, plus a screenshot or video.
- Date and approximate time, platform, and device model.
- Whether the session was solo or multiplayer, and whether you were the world owner or a keyholder.
- World mode and difficulty, and whether the problem occurred in a cave, near a village, or near a large build.
- What changed immediately before the issue, including recent construction or cave activity.
- Whether a restart temporarily cleared it, whether other players could enter, and whether the problem can be reproduced.
How to read the reports today
The cave crashes and complexity warnings were genuine launch-era player complaints, but the reports did not establish a shared root cause. Epic subsequently documented fixes for several related cave, spawning, stability, and rejoining issues. Because its cited patch notes do not explicitly confirm that every complexity-warning failure was fixed—and old player posts cannot establish current prevalence—the evidence does not support describing the December 2023 problem as a widespread, unchanged crisis in 2026.
