In LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, the safest start is to gather nearby resources, craft a Forest Axe and Pickaxe, then establish a village before venturing into dangerous biomes or caves. Odyssey is Fortnite’s LEGO survival-crafting adventure—not Battle Royale with minifigures—and its four modes offer very different levels of survival pressure.
What should I do first in LEGO Fortnite?
Look around your starting area before choosing where to settle. Trees, rocks and bushes close by make it easier to collect the materials needed for early tools and construction. LEGO’s first-hours guide emphasizes checking for these resources rather than wandering far without equipment.
Craft tools before roaming
Use a Crafting Bench to make a Common Forest Axe and Common Pickaxe. The axe helps gather wood, while the pickaxe breaks boulders; both improve your ability to collect materials for further crafting. A shovel is useful when you are ready to open a farming path. LEGO’s Survival tips cover these early tools and crafting steps.
As you expand your workshop, a Lumber Mill can turn wood into Wooden Rods for a Common Shortsword. A Spinning Wheel makes Cord, which can be used to craft items such as a shield or crossbow. These are practical ways to build up your equipment, but recipes and balance can change, so check the current in-game crafting menus.

Make your village a progression hub
Place a Village Square somewhere convenient for building and future expeditions. It marks the surrounding area as a village and attracts NPC minifigures. Upgrading the village and Crafting Bench unlocks additional blueprints, giving you a reason to invest in a useful settlement rather than treating it as a temporary shelter.
How do I survive the first night?
Use the time before nightfall to secure basic tools, food and a safe place to return to. LEGO’s Survival tips recommend preparing your village and equipment, while its biome guide explains that temperature hazards differ by region.

- KLOMBO HAS ARRIVED – Kids ages 10+ can build an enormous LEGO Fortnite creature from the battle royale game
- PEELY & ORO MINIFIGURES – Peely and Oro can ride on Klombo's back, just like in the popular game, for epic Fortnite adventures

- GIFT FOR FORTNITE FANS – Makes a perfect birthday present for boys and girls who love Fortnite toys and building challenges that combine creativity with their favorite game
- Gather local materials and craft a Forest Axe and Pickaxe before traveling far.
- Keep food available for recovery and check its current effect in-game.
- Pay attention to temperature as you move into a new biome; a Torch can help with Grasslands cold, but it is not enough to handle Frostlands freezing.
- Bring suitable food and temperature-resistance items for the conditions you expect to encounter.
Food can also have benefits beyond basic healing. LEGO’s biome guide describes grilled Corn on the Cob as granting a two-minute stamina-regeneration bonus and Slurp Juice as replenishing health over five minutes. These are effect descriptions, not guarantees that every recipe or duration remains unchanged; verify the recipe and effect in your current game.
What should I bring into caves?
Treat a cave as an expedition rather than a quick detour. Darkness, hard-to-reach deposits, enemies and temperature hazards can make an unprepared trip costly. LEGO’s cave guide recommends planning for navigation, construction and the cave’s conditions.

- WELCOME TO DURR BURGER – Kids ages 10+ can build the iconic Fortnite restaurant (77076) with authentic details from the popular battle royale game

- Torches: Use them to navigate dark areas.
- Wood: Keep some available to build stairs or platforms that reach elevated deposits.
- Healing food: Bring a way to recover if you take damage.
- Temperature preparation: Carry appropriate food or resistance items for hot or cold caves.
- Suitable tools: Stronger cave materials require stronger tools, so check the deposit and your equipment before committing to a trip.
For example, LEGO says Ice Caves contain Iron and Rough Sapphire deposits that require an Epic Pickaxe. The guide also warns that Bone Wolves are dangerous. Do not assume a basic pickaxe or weapon will be adequate for every cave.
What is the best mode for beginners?
Choose based on how much survival pressure you want, not on an assumption that every mode is simply an easier or harder version of the same experience. LEGO’s mode guide distinguishes Survival and Sandbox as well as the more forgiving Cozy and more punishing Expert settings.

No purchase is needed for gameplay progression. LEGO says in-game LEGO Kits are optional cosmetics and “offer no gameplay advantages” in its guide to LEGO Kits and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey purchases. Physical LEGO Fortnite sets, such as the Battle Bus building set listed on LEGO’s Odyssey page, are separate collectibles and are not in-game tools or upgrades.

How to make your next expedition safer
Before leaving your village, check the destination, your equipment and your return plan. A short trip for nearby materials calls for less preparation than an Ice Cave or a freezing biome. Use the map and environment to decide whether your tools, food and temperature protection match the risks; if not, upgrade at home first.
