There is now an official LEGO PlayStation set: model 72306, a 1,911-piece adult display build of the original console and controller. That is different from a fan-made PlayStation-inspired MOC, which remains an individual creator’s design unless LEGO has approved and released it. The right choice depends on whether you want an officially released, defined set or a particular custom design whose instructions, parts, and features you have checked.
What is official, and what is fan-made?
LEGO announced set 72306 on September 3, 2026, calling it the first-ever LEGO PlayStation set. General LEGO availability was announced for October 4, following LEGO Insiders early access on October 1. These are announced release dates, not a guarantee that the set is currently in stock in every market.
A “PlayStation-inspired” build describes its subject, not its licensing or retail status. A fan-made build, often called a MOC (“my own creation”), may be a builder’s model, a set of instructions, or a parts package. Check the named creator’s page to see exactly what is offered. Do not assume a custom design is licensed by Sony, approved by LEGO, or sold as a LEGO product.

A console-and-controller display model
The model recreates the original PlayStation console and its first controller at near 1:1 scale. Its 1,911 pieces and 18+ age guidance make it an adult-focused build intended for display, rather than a small gaming accessory. LEGO gives the width as approximately 26 cm (10.5 in).

Working details and two game scenes
The Open and Power buttons function, and the controller plugs into the console. Two removable buildable dioramas reference Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, originally released in 1997 and 1999, respectively. The scenes can be displayed separately from the console. Which option suits you?
Choose the official set for a defined, licensed build
Set 72306 is the straightforward choice if you want the released LEGO PlayStation product, a specified piece count and dimensions, and the console, controller, and included game scenes in one set. Its age guidance and scale make it most naturally suited to adult builders and display.

Choose a fan design when its specific features matter more
A custom build may appeal if a particular creator’s interpretation or feature set is what you want. Compare the actual design and offer rather than treating all MOCs as one category: instructions may not include physical parts, and the parts list, sourcing effort, and final cost can differ. No general claim that fan builds are cheaper, easier, more accurate, or more customizable applies without checking the individual model.
How to vet a PlayStation-inspired MOC
- Identify the creator and status. Find the original design page and check whether it is a concept, instructions, or an offered parts package. Look for explicit evidence before calling it licensed or approved.
- Confirm what you receive. Determine whether the offer includes only digital instructions, a parts list, or physical pieces, and whether any required elements are excluded.
- Check build facts at the source. Use the creator’s documentation for piece count, dimensions, age suitability, and any interactive features. Do not infer these from a picture.
- Work out the full sourcing cost. If parts are separate, check availability and local prices for the listed pieces before comparing the total with a boxed official set.
LEGO Ideas is a route to review, not a promise of release
LEGO Ideas is one specific way fan concepts can be considered. LEGO says an idea that reaches 10,000 supporters, or is selected through a challenge, may be considered for production as an official LEGO set; reaching the threshold does not guarantee selection. LEGO customer support says review can take several months. These rules describe LEGO Ideas submissions, not every PlayStation-inspired creation shared by fans.
