What is LEGO PlayStation set 72306?
Announced by LEGO on 3 September 2026, set 72306 is designed as a near 1:1-scale model of the original PlayStation and its first controller. It contains 1,911 pieces and is intended for builders aged 18 and up. LEGO lists the finished model at over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep. See LEGO’s product listing.
The scale and shape make it a display piece rather than playable hardware. The controller plugs into the front of the console model, while the console opens to reveal two game-inspired builds.
What gives the set its ’90s nostalgia?
Familiar console details
The model recreates the original PlayStation’s grey console and controller forms, including the distinctive face-button symbols. LEGO says the controller buttons and the console’s Open and Power buttons use newly developed LEGO elements. The Open and Power buttons are described as functional, bringing a small amount of tactile interaction to the display model.

A lid mechanism built to feel familiar
LEGO Design Director Frédéric André said the team worked with PlayStation and used original schematics. In LEGO’s design feature, André described the lid mechanism as a challenge: designer Isaac tested several approaches before settling on a Technic suspension element to reproduce the feel of pressing the original console’s lid button. Two game references inside
Opening the console reveals buildable dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. LEGO dates the games to 1997 and 1999, respectively. The scenes can be tucked inside the console or displayed separately, so the game references are part of the build without permanently changing its exterior look. The nostalgia is specific rather than broad: the set focuses on the original console, its first controller, and two PlayStation-era games. LEGO Design Director Frédéric André recalled visiting a friend to play: “I’ve always been a gamer, but I didn’t own a PlayStation™ myself,” he said. “I’d go to my friend’s house, and we’d spend entire afternoons playing together.”

- It is for display. The build represents the original PlayStation; it is not a functional console.
