LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a funny, approachable retelling of the film with extra pre-film stories and a few new mechanics, but it largely sticks to the familiar LEGO game formula. GameSpot’s 7/10 verdict captures the trade-off: a pleasant adventure for Star Wars fans, though bonus missions take time to unlock and the core play offers few surprises.
What reviewers thought
GameSpot reviewer Randolph Ramsay rated the game 7/10, praising its kid-friendly play, comic moments, and use of the Star Wars universe while noting that its gameplay feels much like other LEGO games. Ramsay summed up the experience: “Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn’t really take you to a new galaxy far, far away, but it’s still a pleasant journey.” Warner Bros. supplied GameSpot’s review copy.

In Ramsay’s playthrough, completing the story and playing a few unlockable side missions took roughly eight hours. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a promised completion time; players who pursue more collectibles or unlocks may spend longer.
Metacritic’s title page, which is keyed to the Wii U release while also presenting title-wide and platform aggregates, showed a 78 Metascore from 61 critic reviews and a 7.0 user rating from 297 ratings when accessed in 2026. Its critic distribution was 72% positive, 28% mixed, and 0% negative. These are changing aggregates, and the page’s platform scope means they should not be read as identical coverage for every version.

The displayed critic reactions include praise for variety as well as concerns about less engaging gameplay, minor technical hiccups, and— in one 2016 GamesRadar+ excerpt—game-breaking glitches. Those are examples of the range of historical review concerns, not evidence that every current version has the same technical problems.
What makes this LEGO Star Wars entry different?
Extra stories set before the film
Alongside its retelling of The Force Awakens, the game adds previously untold stories set before the movie. StarWars.com highlights Han Solo and Chewbacca capturing Rathtars, the Crimson Corsair, Lor San Tekka’s journey, and Poe Dameron rescuing Admiral Ackbar. Key members of the theatrical cast recorded dialogue for the game.

These side chapters are a draw for fans who want more time in this corner of the Star Wars story. The catch, according to GameSpot’s review, is that gold-brick requirements make the extra missions take considerable play to unlock.
New mechanics, familiar foundations
The official feature list includes Multi-Builds, cover-based Blaster Battles, and flight sequences. StarWars.com also advertises more than 200 collectible or customizable characters and 40 playable vehicles or creatures across five free-play environments. These are publisher feature counts; they describe the breadth of content, not how much variety every player will feel during play.

- In LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, players relive the epic action from the blockbuster film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, retold through the clever and witty LEGO lens
- The game will also feature exclusive playable content that bridges the story gap between Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
- LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens also introduces Multi-Builds and Blaster Battles to the LEGO videogame universe
- With Multi-Builds, use available LEGO bricks to open up new paths, then break them apart and re-build them again to open up another! And another! During Blaster Battles, use your surroundings as cover to stand against the First Order.
For Ramsay, the humor and Star Wars details—including jokes aimed at adult fans—are effective, but the underlying structure remains recognizably LEGO. If you want a substantial change to the series’ usual approach, this is not that departure.
Is it worth playing?
It is a good fit if you want a lighthearted Star Wars adventure, enjoy LEGO humor, or like exploring character and story details beyond the film. Its kid-friendly approach can also make it an option for playing alongside a younger partner, as GameSpot’s reviewer observed.

It is a weaker fit if you are looking for a major redesign of the LEGO formula, consistently fresh gameplay, or quick access to every extra story. The central decision is whether the setting, jokes, and fan-service matter more to you than familiar play and a slower unlock path.

The ESRB rates the game E10+ (Everyone 10+) for Cartoon Violence, Comic Mischief, and Mild Language. Its rating summary says: “Players control Lego versions of characters as they traverse platform environments, solve puzzles, and battle enemy soldiers and villains.” The ESRB also describes blasters, lightsabers, Force abilities, vehicle combat, laser blasts, explosions, and enemies breaking into LEGO pieces. The rating is useful guidance, not a guarantee that every family will find the content suitable.

Platforms, editions, and buying checks
GameSpot lists the first release as June 27, 2016, and lists PC, Mac, Android, iOS, Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One. The PlayStation Store gives the PS4 release date as June 28, 2016. These source-specific dates differ; they should not be treated as one universal launch date.
Edition details vary by platform. LEGO’s US PS4 product listing is marked Retired Product and describes the PS4 version as including the Droid Character Pack and Phantom Limb Level Pack, exclusive to PlayStation systems. That status applies to LEGO’s listing; it does not establish whether used copies are available elsewhere.
The PlayStation Store lists the PS4 game and Deluxe Edition and says the PS4 game is playable on PS5, with some PS4 features potentially absent. The store’s displayed $4.99 offer ended October 8, 2026 at 06:59 UTC, so it is not a current offer. Check the live store listing before buying for current price and availability.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that a listing is for your intended platform and edition; a title name alone does not ensure the same included content.
- For physical copies, verify the disc format, region, seller, and condition before purchase.
- If you plan to play on PS5, check the store’s compatibility notes for the PS4 version and its feature limitations.
