Lenovo confirmed on March 28, 2023, that it was discontinuing its Android-based Legion mobile-gaming-phone business. The company said the move was part of a “wider business transformation and gaming portfolio consolidation.” That decision ended the Legion phone line, not the broader Legion gaming brand, which continues across laptops, handhelds, tablets, monitors, accessories and software.
What Lenovo actually confirmed
Android Authority reported Lenovo’s statement from a company spokesperson on March 28, 2023. This was a direct corporate confirmation, not merely an unverified rumor. Lenovo referred specifically to its Android-based Legion mobile gaming phones and did not announce a successor model.
The company did not publish sales figures, profitability data, a precise end-of-support date or a replacement-phone roadmap. Claims that poor sales, overheating or a particular financial loss caused the shutdown remain speculation rather than Lenovo-confirmed explanations. Android Authority’s report contains the confirmation and Lenovo’s stated rationale.
When the Legion phone line began and ended
| Milestone | Date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Legion Phone Duel introduced | July 22, 2020 | Lenovo launched its first Legion-branded Android gaming phone. Lenovo announcement |
| Legion Phone Duel 2 announced | April 8, 2021 | Lenovo unveiled the second major model with a landscape-focused design and gaming hardware. Lenovo announcement |
| Discontinuation confirmed | March 28, 2023 | Lenovo confirmed the end of its Android Legion phone business. |
The Duel 2 was the last major model announced in the cited product record. Regional variants and sales timelines differed, so it is safer to describe it as the final major announced device rather than claim every market received an identical last model.

Why the phones stood out
Legion phones were designed around playing in landscape orientation instead of adding a few gaming features to a conventional smartphone. Both generations emphasized horizontal ergonomics, high-refresh-rate screens, touch-sensitive shoulder controls, RGB lighting and gaming-specific software. The Duel 2 also used a pop-up front camera positioned for landscape use, active cooling and two USB-C ports so charging could be less intrusive while gaming.
Legion Phone Duel 2 launch specifications
| Component | Launch specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G |
| Display | 6.92-inch AMOLED, 2460 × 1080, 144 Hz refresh rate, 720 Hz touch sampling |
| Memory and storage | Up to 18 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512 GB UFS 3.1 storage |
| Battery and charging | 5,500 mAh total battery capacity and 90 W charging |
| Front camera | 44 MP pop-up camera |
| Gaming hardware | Twin Turbo-Fan cooling and virtual Octa-Trigger controls |
These are launch specifications, not a current performance ranking. The Snapdragon 888 is an older platform, so a Duel 2 should not be compared with a current flagship without accounting for several generations of processor, modem and software changes.
Why Lenovo may have left the category
Lenovo’s only directly confirmed explanation was the “wider business transformation and gaming portfolio consolidation.” The company did not say that the phones were unprofitable or identify a sales threshold that triggered the decision.

- MAX POWER, YOUR RULES – Play your way with the Lenovo Legion Go 2. Powered by an AMD Ryzen Z2 processor, a vibrant 8.8" 144Hz Lenovo PureSight OLED gaming display, and a massive 74Whr battery, it’s built to push further, game longer, and stay unplugged.
- MAX COOLING, MANUAL CONTROL – The Legion Coldfront thermal system is built to handle serious heat. Increased radiators and fan blade’s surface area improves the airflow without increasing the noise. Upgraded dual heat pipes distribute heat more efficiently to keep your rig powerful and precise.
- UNLOCK MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY – Experience total freedom with the Legion Truestrike controllers. In FPS mode, the right controller can be detached, docked and operated as a mouse, giving you the edge in every firefight.
- SPEED + IMMERSION – The OLED gaming panel combines blazing speed and visual depth in a single, immersive experience. Game without compromise aided by the ultra-fast response rates, perfect blacks, and vivid color.
- BUILT TO OUTLAST – The Legion Go 2 packs 74Whr of serious staying power. That means longer sessions, higher settings, and fewer compromises, whether you're gaming at full performance or tweaking settings on the go.
There is, however, understandable market context. Gaming phones are a narrow category, Legion phones were available only in selected markets, and contemporaneous coverage identified ASUS’s ROG Phone as an established competitor. Specialized cooling, triggers and charging systems also add cost and weight while mainstream flagships increasingly deliver strong game performance. Lenovo may have considered PCs and handhelds a better strategic fit, but that is analysis—not a disclosed Lenovo conclusion. The contemporaneous report discusses the limited availability and competitive landscape.

What the shutdown means for existing owners
A discontinued product does not stop functioning on the day its product line ends. Owners can generally continue using installed Android applications, compatible games and the phone’s existing hardware. Lenovo still hosts a U.S. product-support page and contact page for the Legion Phone Duel 2:
Those pages document support resources; they do not establish an ongoing Android-version or security-patch commitment. Owners should check the exact model and region rather than assume a particular number of future updates.

Risks that grow over time
- Software: Security updates may be limited or have ended, and some newer apps may eventually require Android versions the phone does not receive.
- Firmware region: Chinese and global editions can differ in Google services, notifications, banking compatibility and update behavior.
- Networks: Imported phones may lack the LTE or 5G bands needed by a particular carrier, especially in the United States.
- Warranty and repairs: Coverage is commonly regional, and parts or authorized service may be difficult to obtain outside the original market.
- Battery and cooling: An older battery can have substantially reduced capacity; fans and other moving components can collect dust or fail.
Lenovo did not abandon gaming
The discontinuation applies to smartphones, not to Legion as a gaming brand. Lenovo’s current public Legion portfolio lists gaming laptops and desktops, Legion Go handhelds, tablets, monitors, keyboards, mice, headsets and Legion Space software. Lenovo’s CES announcements also continue to feature Legion handheld and other gaming hardware. See the current Legion product portfolio, the CES Legion devices announcement and the broader CES 2026 portfolio announcement.
That makes “Legion is dead” misleading shorthand. The phone business is discontinued, while Lenovo continues to use Legion across several gaming form factors.

Used-phone checklist
- Identify the exact region and firmware. Confirm whether the handset is Chinese, global or another regional edition, and verify Google Play and update behavior.
- Check carrier bands. Compare the model’s LTE and 5G bands with your carrier before paying; import compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Inspect update status. Ask for the last security-patch date and consult Lenovo’s documentation for that model and region.
- Test the battery and charging. Run a sustained game, test both USB-C ports and check for unusual heat or rapid battery drain.
- Test the cooling system and controls. Confirm that the fans, shoulder controls, vibration and pop-up camera work without errors or rattling.
- Confirm accessories. The original high-wattage charger, cable, case, dock or proprietary accessories may be difficult to replace.
- Verify service options. Ask whether Lenovo will service that regional model in your country and whether any seller warranty is actually transferable.
What to buy instead
For dedicated mobile gaming
Current ASUS ROG Phone and REDMAGIC models target the same audience with gaming-focused cooling, high-refresh displays and specialized controls. Model availability, software policies and prices vary by country and change over time, so verify the current regional listing before purchase. These phones generally trade camera quality, conventional design and broad service coverage for sustained gaming hardware.
For a better all-purpose phone
A mainstream flagship is usually safer for buyers who prioritize camera performance, carrier compatibility, repair access, resale value and a clearly published software-support policy. It may lack shoulder triggers, large gaming fans or a second charging port, but its everyday support ecosystem is typically less specialized.
For Lenovo-style gaming hardware without a phone
A Legion Go-class handheld or a Legion gaming tablet can preserve the brand’s gaming-first approach. A handheld is not a phone replacement: it normally lacks cellular calling, mobile data, cameras and the same pocketable form factor. Lenovo’s current Legion page is the appropriate place to check live products and regional stock: lenovo.com/us/en/legion/.

Could Legion phones return?
Lenovo has not announced a new Legion smartphone or a verified revival roadmap in the cited official material. The company’s current public emphasis is on PCs, handhelds, tablets, monitors and accessories. A future phone cannot be ruled out, but there is no confirmed successor to plan around.
The bottom line
Lenovo really did end its Legion Android gaming-phone business, and it confirmed that decision on March 28, 2023. The move was described as part of a wider business transformation and gaming-portfolio consolidation. It did not end Legion gaming overall. Existing Duel phones remain usable legacy devices, but buyers should treat imported or used units as unsupported-risk purchases and verify firmware, network bands, battery condition, accessories and repair coverage before committing.
