The Lenovo Legion Go S uses AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Go—not a “Ryzen Zen 2 Go.” Lenovo identifies the chip as a four-core, eight-thread Zen 3 processor with RDNA 2 graphics. Lenovo announced a SteamOS version from an expected $499.99 in January 2025, but a Best Buy listing observed in early August 2026 showed $989.99 for a 16GB/512GB model. That gap makes the live price, not the old starting-price announcement, the key buying question.
What is the Ryzen Z2 Go—and is it Zen 2?
The chip’s name is AMD Ryzen Z2 Go. “Z2” is part of AMD’s product name; it does not mean the processor uses Zen 2 architecture. Lenovo identifies it as Zen 3. Its four CPU cores and eight threads are a more useful indication of its tier than the Z2 name alone. Lenovo’s [product specifications](https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/handheld/legion-go-s/83l3001vus) list a 3.0GHz base clock and boost up to 4.3GHz; Lenovo’s [PSREF specification](https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Legion/Legion_Go_S_8ARP1/Legion_Go_S_8ARP1_Spec.PDF) gives additional processor details.
That makes the Z2 Go an entry-level option in the Legion Go S family, not a straightforward successor to every chip with a lower-looking model number. The Go S is also sold with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, which Lenovo specifies as an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor. The Z1 Extreme has twice the CPU cores and a newer graphics architecture; the Z2 Go’s name does not make it the faster choice.

What did Lenovo announce, and what does the price evidence show?
Lenovo’s January 2025 CES announcement gave expected US starting prices for different configurations, not a permanent price for every Go S model:

These were announced starting prices and should not be read as today’s street prices. A Best Buy listing for the Ryzen Z2 Go, SteamOS, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD model (83L30030US) showed $989.99 when observed in early August 2026, with a $75 saving and a deal end date of July 27, 2026. That dated listing is evidence of a later retail price, not confirmation of the live price now. Check the retailer’s current price, stock, seller and condition before buying. The sources establish a large difference between Lenovo’s announced expected starting price and that later listing; they do not establish why it occurred. Availability, retailer pricing and configuration differences are possible factors, but none is confirmed as the cause. Compare the exact APU, operating system, memory, storage, warranty and condition rather than relying on the “Legion Go S” name alone.

What does the Z2 Go Legion Go S include?
The relevant configuration here is the SteamOS Z2 Go model with 16GB memory and a 512GB SSD. Other Go S versions may differ materially, including models with Windows 11, more memory or the Z1 Extreme processor. The 120Hz figure describes the panel’s refresh capability, not a promise that demanding games will render at 120 frames per second. At the screen’s full 1920 × 1200 resolution, this APU has substantially more work to do than at a lower resolution.

What performance should you expect in games?
Think of the Z2 Go as a handheld for lighter games and for demanding games played with adjusted resolution and settings—not as a dependable way to run new AAA releases at native 1200p and high settings. Lowering resolution to around 720p or 800p, reducing graphics settings, and using upscaling such as FSR where available can make a meaningful difference.
In its SteamOS review, TechRadar reported results including 32 fps in Assassin’s Creed Mirage at 720p versus 21 fps at 1200p on the settings it tested, and 39 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 720p medium versus 19 fps at 1200p medium. Its Doom: The Dark Ages result was 37 fps at 1080p using the handheld preset and FSR Balanced; its Cyberpunk 2077 testing at ultra settings illustrated how quickly performance can become inadequate without reducing settings. These are review-unit results under particular settings and conditions, not guaranteed outcomes for every device or game. Results can vary with power mode, thermal conditions, drivers and game updates. The 55.5Wh battery is a capacity specification, not a runtime guarantee: demanding games, brightness and refresh-rate settings affect how long a charge lasts. No single play-time estimate applies to every workload.

Choose based on the games and software you actually use. The cited Z2 Go SteamOS listing describes a gamepad-oriented interface and quick suspend/resume. SteamOS can make supported Steam games feel more console-like, but it does not make every PC game or launcher compatible.

- SteamOS: A good fit if most of your library is on Steam and you prioritize controller navigation and a console-like handheld experience. Check compatibility for games that depend on specific anti-cheat systems, Windows-only launchers or utilities before purchase.
- Windows: A better fit if you need Windows Game Pass PC access, several non-Steam launchers, particular mods or desktop applications. It offers broader Windows software compatibility, though the handheld experience is less tightly focused on a single game storefront.
Operating system is only one part of the comparison: confirm the specific listing’s RAM, SSD and processor as well. A Windows Go S with different hardware is not the same-value proposition as the 16GB/512GB SteamOS Z2 Go model.

The Legion Go S is a more conventional handheld design than the original Legion Go: it has an 8-inch display and integrated controls rather than detachable controllers and a built-in kickstand. That makes the Go S simpler to use as a handheld, but less modular. The Go 2 is a higher-end alternative with an 8.8-inch OLED display and Z2 Extreme hardware; its price position is also higher. Compare the exact models and current prices rather than assuming that a newer product name or larger screen makes one device the better value.
When is the Z2 Go model worth buying?
Use these as editorial value bands for the 16GB/512GB Z2 Go SteamOS configuration, not as claims about current market prices:

Buy when the live price is clearly below stronger Z1 Extreme or newer handheld alternatives, unless SteamOS and the Go S form factor are your overriding priorities. If the Z2 Go price approaches that of stronger models, compare those models directly instead of treating the Z2 Go as a bargain because of Lenovo’s earlier announcement.
Good reasons to choose it
- You mainly play supported Steam games, indie titles, older games or less demanding releases.
- You are comfortable lowering resolution or graphics settings in newer, demanding games.
- You want the Go S’s 8-inch variable-refresh display and integrated controls.
- You can buy the exact configuration at a price that reflects its entry-level processor.
Reasons to choose something else
- You expect demanding new games to run well at native 1920 × 1200 or close to the panel’s 120Hz maximum.
- You need Windows-only software, Game Pass PC or compatibility with a particular launcher or anti-cheat system without workarounds.
- You want detachable controllers, a built-in kickstand or a clear performance jump over an original Legion Go.
- The live price is near $900–$1,000 or close to a stronger Z1 Extreme or newer handheld.
Check model number, operating system, APU, memory, storage, seller, warranty and condition before paying. For US buyers, the cited Best Buy SKU is 83L30030US; similarly named listings can describe different hardware or configurations.
