Lenovo has not abandoned the original 8.8-inch Legion Go. In a statement reported by PCWorld, the company said it is continuing necessary driver and BIOS updates for the first-generation handheld through October 2029.
That is a meaningful correction to earlier reports of an end to Ryzen Z1 Extreme driver support, but it is not a promise of monthly releases, day-one fixes for every game, future Windows compatibility, or hardware repairs for the same period.
What Lenovo actually confirmed
The commitment applies to the original Lenovo Legion Go: the first-generation, 8.8-inch model identified in Lenovo documentation as platform family 8APU1. Lenovo told PCWorld that it is “actively continuing to support” this device with necessary driver and BIOS updates through October 2029.
The report does not establish a precise day in October. Community references to October 28, 2029 are not confirmed by the stronger contemporary reporting, so the reliable wording is “through October 2029.”

What “support through October 2029” includes
Device drivers and BIOS updates
The stated commitment covers necessary graphics and other device drivers, plus BIOS updates. Lenovo’s Legion Go user guide documents the company’s driver and BIOS update process.

What Lenovo did not promise
- A fixed schedule such as monthly releases.
- Driver updates on the same day AMD publishes a generic package.
- Every new AMD Adrenalin feature or optimization.
- Guaranteed performance in every future PC game.
- Compatibility with every future Windows version.
- Warranty coverage, free repairs, replacement controllers, batteries, or parts through October 2029.
In practical terms, this is a maintenance commitment for the device’s firmware and drivers, not a guarantee that the handheld will remain capable of running every new game at acceptable settings.
Why owners thought support had ended
Concern began after a February 2026 customer-service response was interpreted as saying that the original Legion Go would receive no further updates because AMD had ended driver support for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform. Reports from Windows Central and other outlets amplified the uncertainty.

Lenovo’s later clarification is the stronger statement about the current position: the first-generation Go has not been discontinued, and Lenovo says its support continues through October 2029. AMD’s generic chip-driver policy and Lenovo’s device-specific releases are separate matters.
Why Lenovo updates may arrive after AMD’s
A generic AMD driver is designed for a broad range of compatible hardware. Lenovo’s package must also be checked against the Legion Go’s power profiles, display behavior, controls, sleep and resume behavior, and Legion software integration. Lenovo says its releases go through validation and that it is coordinating with AMD on timing.

| Update source | What it may provide | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo support page or Lenovo Vantage | Validated Legion Go BIOS and device drivers | May arrive later than AMD’s generic release |
| AMD universal graphics driver | Potentially newer game fixes or graphics features | May not preserve Lenovo-specific tuning or receive Lenovo support for resulting problems |
| Windows Update | Microsoft-distributed driver and operating-system updates | Availability and feature coverage are controlled by Microsoft and hardware partners |
What owners should do when a game needs a newer driver
- Check Lenovo first. Open the official Legion Go support resources for the 8APU1 model and check Lenovo Vantage for BIOS and driver updates.
- Install available Lenovo packages. Follow the update instructions in Lenovo’s user guide, keep the handheld connected to power, and do not interrupt a BIOS update.
- Check Windows Update. A Windows-provided driver may resolve a compatibility issue when a Lenovo package is not yet available.
- Use a generic AMD package cautiously. Confirm that it is compatible with the exact Legion Go model and Windows configuration. Save the Lenovo driver or recovery option first.
- Roll back if necessary. If display orientation, variable refresh rate, power profiles, sleep and resume, controller behavior, or Legion Space integration breaks, reinstall the Lenovo-provided driver.
A BIOS update is more serious than an ordinary graphics-driver installation. Keep the device on reliable power, use only Lenovo’s official instructions and packages, and contact Lenovo if the system fails to recover after an update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this guarantee future game compatibility?
No. Driver support and game support are different. Future games may demand newer graphics features, more memory, updated Windows components, compatible anti-cheat systems, or performance beyond what the Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform can deliver. Lenovo’s commitment extends the maintenance window; it does not make the original Go a current-generation console with guaranteed first-party compatibility.

Does the October 2029 date cover the Legion Go S or Go 2?
Not based on the statement reported by PCWorld. The date applies specifically to the original 8.8-inch Legion Go. Lenovo presents the Legion Go S and Legion Go 2 as newer, separate products in its CES 2025 announcement, and the Legion Go 2 product page identifies a distinct second-generation model. Their support lifecycles should not be inferred from the original Go’s date.
What this means for current owners
- The immediate fear of abandonment is not supported by Lenovo’s latest clarification.
- Necessary BIOS and driver maintenance is expected through October 2029, but release timing may be uneven.
- AMD releases and Lenovo-validated packages will not necessarily arrive together.
- Newer games can still outgrow the hardware or encounter Windows and anti-cheat compatibility problems.
- Warranty, repairs, batteries, controllers, and replacement parts require separate country- and plan-specific verification.
What this means for someone considering a purchase
The clarification makes a substantially discounted original Legion Go less risky for buyers who value its large 8.8-inch display, detachable controllers, kickstand, and Windows flexibility. It removes one serious objection—fear that Lenovo had already stopped maintaining the device.
It does not automatically make the original model a better choice than newer handhelds. Compare the purchase price with newer hardware, battery expectations, ergonomics, Windows usability, update timing, accessories, repair options, and the performance level needed for the games you intend to play. A buyer who wants a more console-like software experience may prefer a Steam Deck, while someone committed to Windows launchers, mods, Game Pass PC, or peripherals may accept the Legion Go’s greater maintenance overhead.
The Steam Deck uses a SteamOS-centered model rather than the Legion Go’s Windows-first approach. The ASUS ROG Ally family is another Windows handheld option with different hardware, ergonomics, software, battery characteristics, and support practices. Neither alternative changes the meaning of Lenovo’s October 2029 statement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe bottom line
Lenovo says the original Legion Go is still supported and will receive necessary driver and BIOS updates through October 2029. That is reassuring maintenance support, especially after the Ryzen Z1 Extreme controversy. Owners should nevertheless expect Lenovo’s validation process to affect timing and should not treat the date as a promise of perpetual cutting-edge features, guaranteed future game compatibility, or hardware service.
