Lenovo confirmed in March 2023 that it was discontinuing its Android-based Legion gaming phones. The decision did not end Lenovo’s Legion gaming brand or its wider gaming business. A 2026 report has since pointed to a possible Legion Y70 return, but that is not confirmation of a worldwide relaunch or a phone currently available to buy.
What Lenovo actually shut down
The discontinued business was Lenovo’s line of Android-based Legion mobile gaming phones, including the Legion Phone Duel models. Lenovo described the decision as part of a “wider business transformation and gaming portfolio consolidation” and said it did not affect its other gaming products. Android Authority reported the confirmation on March 28, 2023, quoting a Lenovo spokesperson.
That distinction matters: Lenovo did not shut down Legion or abandon gaming hardware. The company continued to announce Legion gaming PCs, handhelds, tablets, and accessories, including products in its 2026 CES gaming lineup.
How the Legion phone line reached its shutdown
- September 2020: Lenovo announced the first Legion Phone Duel, a landscape-oriented gaming phone built around a Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G platform, a 6.65-inch 144Hz AMOLED screen, and dual batteries. Lenovo’s announcement describes its gaming-focused design.
- April 8, 2021: Lenovo announced the Legion Phone Duel 2, the last major globally marketed model in the line. It began arriving in China in April and selected Asia-Pacific and European markets in May.
- March 2023: Lenovo confirmed it was discontinuing its Android-based Legion gaming phones.
- April 2026: Android Authority reported that Lenovo was teasing a possible return of the Legion Y70 line. The report does not by itself establish a shipping product or global relaunch.
What made the Legion Phone Duel 2 distinctive
The Duel 2 focused on sustained, landscape-oriented play rather than simply putting a fast processor in a conventional phone. Lenovo’s April 2021 specifications included a Snapdragon 888 5G chip, up to 18GB of LPDDR5 memory and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and a 6.92-inch 2460×1080 AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 720Hz touch sampling. It also had integrated twin-fan cooling, touch and ultrasonic controls, dual USB-C ports, and a 5,500mAh dual-cell battery. Lenovo advertised charging up to 90W with the appropriate charging setup.

Regional availability was limited. Lenovo announced sales in China and selected Asia-Pacific and European markets; North American availability was still undetermined at launch. European launch prices were €799 for the 12GB/256GB model and €999 for the 16GB/512GB version with charging dock. These were launch prices, not current used-market values. Lenovo’s launch announcement lists the specifications, regions, and pricing.
The Duel 2 also appeared under the Phone 2 Pro name in China. A Lenovo U.S. support listing exists, but a support page does not mean the phone had broad U.S. retail or carrier availability. Lenovo’s U.S. support page is useful for product support, not proof of a U.S. launch.
Why Lenovo discontinued the phones
Lenovo’s public explanation was “wider business transformation and gaming portfolio consolidation.” The company did not provide a detailed financial rationale in the shutdown announcement. The available evidence does not establish that poor sales, overheating, software problems, or lack of demand caused the decision.

It is reasonable to see the exit in the context of a specialized product category: active cooling, extra controls, and gaming-specific ergonomics add hardware and design complexity, while many premium phones already offer powerful processors and high-refresh-rate displays. Those are possible industry considerations, not stated reasons from Lenovo. The company’s own explanation remains the only directly attributed rationale.

Lenovo’s 2026 materials show the broader portfolio remained active. The company announced a Legion Go powered by SteamOS with an estimated starting price of $1,199 and expected availability from June 2026; that is an announced estimate, not a guaranteed current transaction price. Its MWC 2026 materials listed a Legion Tab at an estimated starting price of €999 and expected availability from April 2026. Those devices serve different needs from a pocketable phone. Lenovo’s CES announcement and MWC materials provide those launch estimates.
What Legion phone owners should check
A discontinued product line does not automatically stop an existing phone from working. Installed apps, games, Wi-Fi, cellular service, and accessories may continue to work, subject to the phone’s condition, app requirements, and network compatibility. The practical risks are future update coverage, repair and parts availability, and the aging battery and hardware.

Updates and security
Do not assume a particular Android version or security-patch schedule. Lenovo’s Android Upgrade Matrix says products not listed have no upgrade plan available and notes that dates can vary by country. Check the exact model on Lenovo’s regional support page, using the IMEI where requested; an update entry for one region may not apply to another.
Repairs, parts, and accessories
Lenovo support pages can help with manuals, warranty lookup, troubleshooting, and service routing, but they do not guarantee that batteries, displays, cooling fans, charging docks, or other parts are still sold. Availability depends on country and device age. Back up important data before an update or repair, and check local service options before relying on a repair.
Carrier and firmware compatibility
For imported or used phones, verify LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, and emergency-calling support with the intended carrier. Chinese and international versions may differ in firmware, bands, Google services, and update behavior. Treat bootloader unlocking, ROM flashing, and unofficial firmware as separate procedures that may be unsupported unless Lenovo documents them.

Is Lenovo bringing Legion phones back?
Android Authority reported in April 2026 that Lenovo was teasing a new generation of Legion Y70 phones after a four-year gap, with a possible reveal in May. That report suggests a potential return, but the Lenovo launch details established here do not confirm final specifications, a retail release, pricing, release regions, or a U.S. launch. Nor does a reported Y70 teaser establish that Lenovo has restored its former global Legion-phone business.
The most accurate way to describe the status is two-part: Lenovo confirmed the end of the previous Android Legion-phone operation in 2023; a possible Y70 return was reported in 2026, but should not be treated as a confirmed global relaunch without a first-party launch announcement.

Should you buy a used Legion Phone Duel 2?
It may suit an enthusiast who specifically wants the Duel 2’s landscape controls, active cooling, or dual USB-C layout, but an older high-performance phone carries more risk than its original specifications suggest. Lenovo’s regional product pages in Spain and the UK now mark the model as unavailable: Spain and United Kingdom.

- Confirm the exact model and region, then check carrier bands, VoLTE, and 5G support.
- Inspect battery condition and test charging, both USB-C ports, fans, controls, and display.
- Ask which charger, cable, dock, and firmware are included; fast charging may depend on the appropriate accessories.
- Confirm essential apps still support the installed Android version.
- Check local repair and parts availability, and avoid unknown firmware modifications unless you understand their risks.
What to consider instead
If you want dedicated gaming-phone controls and cooling, compare current gaming phones by local availability, carrier compatibility, update commitments, repair support, cooling, controls, battery, camera needs, and price. ASUS ROG Phone and REDMAGIC are examples of gaming-phone lines, but model availability and terms vary by market.
A mainstream flagship may be the better fit if long-term software support, cameras, carrier compatibility, and resale matter more than shoulder controls or active cooling. A gaming tablet provides a larger screen but is not automatically a cellular phone. Lenovo’s Legion Go is for handheld PC gaming rather than everyday phone use; the Legion Tab is a larger-screen gaming option whose cellular and calling capabilities depend on the exact model and market.
