The question mark is about bandwidth: LG’s announcement describes a 67% increase over DisplayPort 1.4, but does not name the monitor’s DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR tier. The available specifications therefore do not establish whether its port supports the full 80Gbps capability discussed in coverage of the announcement.
What LG announced
LG announced the UltraGear GX7 as model 27GX790A on November 18, 2024. The company describes a 27-inch WOLED panel with a 2,560 × 1,440 resolution, a maximum 480Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GTG) response time. These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent test results. Source: LG Electronics, November 18, 2024.
LG lists DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1. Its announcement specifies one DisplayPort 2.1 port, two HDMI 2.1 ports, USB 3.0 upstream and downstream, and a four-pole headphone output. LG’s New Zealand product page identifies the regional listing as 27GX790A-B; check the model suffix when looking at a local listing. What is the DisplayPort 2.1 question?
DisplayPort 2.1 covers more than one bandwidth tier. A port labeled “DisplayPort 2.1” does not, by that label alone, tell a buyer which UHBR data rate the device implements. That distinction matters when assessing what a connection can carry: the version name is not a substitute for a stated bandwidth tier.

In its announcement, LG says the monitor’s DisplayPort 2.1 connection provides a 67% bandwidth increase over DisplayPort 1.4. HotHardware’s November 18, 2024 report notes that applying 67% to DisplayPort 1.4’s cited maximum of 32.4Gbps gives about 54Gbps. The report also discusses 80Gbps as the full DisplayPort 2.1 bandwidth capability. Neither that calculation nor LG’s percentage specifies the GX7’s UHBR tier.
| Figure or wording | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| DisplayPort 1.4: up to 32.4Gbps | The maximum used as the baseline in HotHardware’s November 18, 2024 calculation. | The measured bandwidth of the LG monitor. |
| 67% increase | LG’s November 18, 2024 announcement claim for the monitor’s DisplayPort 2.1 connection relative to DisplayPort 1.4. | A specific UHBR tier; LG does not name one in that announcement. |
| About 54Gbps | HotHardware’s arithmetic result from applying 67% to 32.4Gbps. | A measured or manufacturer-confirmed GX7 port rate. |
| 80Gbps | The full DisplayPort 2.1 bandwidth capability discussed in HotHardware’s explanation. | Confirmation that this monitor implements that tier. |
So the careful answer to “Does the 27GX790A support full 80Gbps DisplayPort 2.1?” is: the cited product announcement and product page do not establish that. The arithmetic behind the concern is not proof that the monitor lacks full-bandwidth support, either. HotHardware reported that a clarification request was pending at publication, but that 2024 report does not establish LG’s current position.

What the headline specifications tell you—and what they do not
Resolution and refresh rate
QHD means 2,560 × 1,440 pixels. LG advertises a maximum refresh rate of 480Hz, indicating the monitor’s stated ceiling; it is not a guarantee that every connected system, setting or game will run at that rate. The available announcement does not provide an independent performance assessment.
Response time
LG lists 0.03ms GTG. The measurement label matters: GTG describes a gray-to-gray transition, and the published specification is not a substitute for independent testing under stated conditions. The announcement does not provide an independently measured response-time result.
