libguide40.dll Missing: Trace the App Behind the Intel Runtime

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, record:

• Which application fails? Read the full error and its file path.
• When did it begin? Check whether it followed an update, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus alert, or move to another computer.
• Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit? A 32-bit application still needs 32-bit dependencies on 64-bit Windows.
• What does the message say? “Missing,” “not found,” “failed to load,” “not a valid Windows image,” and OpenMP conflict errors require different fixes.
• Where is the DLL expected? The application folder is more relevant than System32 or SysWOW64.

libguide40.dll is a genuine Intel legacy OpenMP runtime, not a Windows system file. libguide40.dll normally belongs to an older Intel-compiled application, Intel Math Kernel Library component, scientific program, National Instruments application, CyberLink product, or MATLAB-generated component.

The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the application that requested the file. Do not download a loose copy from a DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32.

What is libguide40.dll?

The file is described as Guide Runtime Library and is part of the Guide Run-time Library developed by Intel Corporation. Older Intel compiler tooling supplied it as a Windows dynamic OpenMP and parallelizer runtime.

Applications use this runtime to support multithreaded calculations and parallel operations. It may be present in the program’s own directory or in a vendor-supplied Intel or MKL runtime directory.

It is not normally part of Windows. You should not expect a healthy installation to place it in:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

The correct copy is usually installed alongside the parent application. That application knows which build, architecture, and supporting files it requires.

Older file databases commonly identify examples such as a 64-bit build numbered 4.0.2009.811 and a 32-bit build numbered 4.0.2005.902. These are not universal requirements. The application’s own installer determines the correct version.

Modern Intel compiler generations generally use libiomp5md.dll instead. Intel has stated that the older libguide40 runtime and newer libiomp5 runtime are not interchangeable.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent application

This is the most likely solution because an incomplete application update or damaged installation commonly removes one of its private runtime files.

Find the application from the error path

Read the complete error message. If it displays a path such as:

C:Program FilesVendorNameApplicationNamelibguide40.dll

the folder immediately above the DLL usually identifies the program that owns it.

If the message does not show a path:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. Select Processes or Details.
3. Look for the program that fails to start.
4. Right-click it, if it appears, and select Open file location.
5. Note the application name and installation folder.

You can also search the application’s installation directory:

1. Press Windows key + E.
2. Open the drive where the program is installed.
3. Search for libguide40.dll.
4. Right-click any result and select Open file location.

A copy inside the application directory may be legitimate. A copy in a random temporary or user-profile folder deserves more scrutiny, particularly if you do not recognize the program that loaded it.

Repair from Windows Settings

For a conventionally installed desktop application:

1. Press Windows key + I.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
4. Search for the application named in the error.
5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
7. Select Repair.
8. Start the application again.

The Repair option may not exist for every desktop program. It may also repair only the application registration rather than reinstalling all files.

If Repair is absent or unsuccessful, use the application’s original installer or launcher. Look for an entry named Repair, Modify, Verify, Verify integrity of files, or Scan and repair.

For a game launcher, open the game’s properties or management menu and choose its file-verification command. Allow the launcher to replace missing or damaged files, then restart Windows before testing again.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair does not restore the file:

1. Back up application settings, saved projects, or game saves.
2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
3. Select the affected application.
4. Choose Uninstall.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Download or run the installer supplied by the application’s developer, organization, or original installation media.
7. Install the same architecture required by the application.
8. Start the program again.

Do not uninstall Intel compiler components at random if several development applications use them. First determine whether the failing application has its own runtime directory.

If the program is very old, its original installer or supported legacy release may be the only reliable source. A current Intel oneAPI package does not necessarily contain libguide40.dll.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if:

• the application starts without the DLL message;
• the repaired application directory contains its expected runtime files;
• the program reaches its normal main window;
• no new error names a missing dependency.

If the same error returns immediately, continue with the architecture, antivirus, and dependency checks below rather than copying a different DLL over the installed one.

Fix 2: Match the application architecture and Intel runtime

A 32-bit program needs a 32-bit libguide40.dll. A 64-bit program needs a 64-bit build. A 64-bit version of Windows does not make a 32-bit application compatible with a 64-bit DLL.

Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit

1. Press Windows key + I.
2. Select System.
3. Select About.
4. Read System type.

This tells you the Windows architecture, not necessarily the application architecture. Many older Windows programs are 32-bit even on 64-bit Windows.

Check the application architecture

The most reliable source is the application vendor’s documentation or installer. You can also inspect the executable:

1. Open the application’s installation folder.
2. Right-click its main .exe file.
3. Select Properties.
4. Open the Details tab.
5. Record the product and file information.
6. If the vendor provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers, use the architecture documented for that release.

Do not assume a file’s name identifies its bitness. A filename alone is not enough to determine compatibility.

Understand the old and new Intel runtimes

Older applications may request:

libguide40.dll

Newer Intel-compiled applications commonly request:

libiomp5md.dll

libiomp5md.dll is not a drop-in replacement. Renaming it to libguide40.dll, copying it over the old file, or placing both files in a system directory can create a bad image error, missing exports, or an OpenMP initialization conflict.

Install the exact Intel or MKL redistributable specified by the application vendor. Do not assume that the newest Intel runtime supplies the legacy file.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application DLL after an update or after the file’s reputation changes.

Inspect Windows Security

1. Open Start.
2. Type Windows Security.
3. Open it.
4. Select Virus & threat protection.
5. Select Protection history.
6. Look for an entry involving libguide40.dll or the affected application.
7. Expand the entry and record the detected path.

Do not restore the file solely because its name appears in the error. First confirm that:

• the file was inside the expected application directory;
• the application came from its legitimate developer or original media;
• the installer and surrounding files are trustworthy;
• a full security scan finds no broader problem.

If the file was quarantined from an unexpected user-profile or temporary directory, scan the computer before restoring anything.

Prefer a clean reinstall

When the file is missing because antivirus removed it, reinstalling the application from its trusted installer is safer than restoring a loose DLL. It replaces the file together with the other files and metadata expected by that particular build.

After reinstalling, update the security product and run a full scan. If the same file is quarantined again, contact the application vendor or security-product vendor rather than repeatedly creating exclusions.

Fix 4: Resolve an OpenMP runtime conflict

Not every libguide40.dll error means the file is absent. Some programs load the old Intel runtime while another component loads libiomp5md.dll. The result may be an error about OpenMP initialization, duplicate runtimes, or incompatible parallel libraries.

This can happen when:

• an older application loads an Intel MKL component;
• a MATLAB-generated or scientific component loads another Intel runtime;
• separate plug-ins were built with different Intel compiler generations;
• a program bundles one runtime while the system path exposes another.

What to do

1. Write down every DLL named in the error.
2. Identify the application and all installed plug-ins or extensions.
3. Update the application and its extensions from the same vendor.
4. Repair or reinstall the application so its components are rebuilt or realigned.
5. Remove only obsolete plug-ins that the vendor identifies as incompatible.
6. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not treat this setting as a permanent fix:

KMP_DUPLICATE_LIB_OK=TRUE

It can suppress a diagnostic in some cases, but allowing duplicate OpenMP runtimes can cause instability, incorrect results, or crashes. The durable solution is to update or rebuild the application so its components use one compatible runtime.

Fix 5: Check for a damaged dependency or bad image

Messages such as these point to more than a simple missing file:

• “libguide40.dll is not a valid Windows image”
• “The operating system cannot run”
• “The module failed to load”
• “This application was unable to start”

Possible causes include a corrupted DLL, wrong architecture, incomplete extraction, or a dependency of libguide40.dll that failed first.

Reinstall the application directory

Use the application’s official uninstaller, restart Windows, and reinstall the program. If the installer keeps reusing a damaged directory:

1. Uninstall the application.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Back up settings and saved data.
4. Remove only the remaining folder belonging to that application.
5. Install again to a clean directory.

Do not delete every copy of libguide40.dll from the computer. Another older application may depend on its own private copy.

Check the application’s dependencies

If reinstalling does not help, the error may name another missing runtime. Install only the dependency identified by the application vendor. A Microsoft Visual C++ package is not a universal solution for an Intel OpenMP runtime unless the error also names a missing Visual C++ component.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption

Windows system repair commands generally do not recreate libguide40.dll because it is a third-party application file, not a protected Windows component. They are appropriate when other Windows features are also failing or when a damaged Windows dependency is suspected.

Run DISM, then SFC

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Approve the permission prompt.
6. Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for it to finish.
2. Then run:

sfc /scannow

1. Restart Windows.
2. Test the application again.

DISM should run before SFC. If both commands report that Windows files are healthy but the application still cannot find libguide40.dll, return to the application repair and runtime-matching steps.

Fix 7: Update related drivers only when the error points there

A graphics, chipset, or storage driver normally does not install libguide40.dll. Driver work is relevant when the failing application is tied to a device, the error began after a hardware change, or Device Manager shows a separate device problem.

Check Device Manager

1. Right-click Start.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand the category related to the application, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Imaging devices.
4. Right-click the affected device.
5. Select Properties.
6. Open the Driver tab.
7. Note the provider and version.
8. Select Update Driver.
9. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

For a clean vendor update, download the driver from the computer or device manufacturer, then restart Windows and test the application.

Manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver packages can be tedious when the real problem is unrelated. Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for a named Windows dependency

Turning on random Windows Features will not normally install libguide40.dll. Use this check only when the application documentation or error specifically requires an older Windows component.

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Type:

optionalfeatures

1. Press Enter.
2. Review the listed features.
3. Enable only the component documented for the application.
4. Select OK.
5. Restart Windows if prompted.
6. Launch the application again.

Do not enable features merely because they sound related to compatibility. Older programs may require a specific framework or legacy component, but that is separate from the Intel OpenMP runtime itself.

Why regsvr32 does not fix this DLL

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. libguide40.dll is an ordinary runtime library, not a self-registering COM component.

Running this is therefore not a repair:

regsvr32 libguide40.dll

It commonly produces an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found or that registration failed.

Use regsvr32 only when the vendor specifically identifies a DLL as a self-registering component and supplies the correct command. Do not use it for libguide40.dll.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Do not download libguide40.dll from a generic DLL website. A loose file may have:

• the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture;
• a different compiler build;
• missing companion files;
• incompatible exports;
• corruption or malware;
• a filename that hides the actual dependency problem.

Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Windows directory. Do not overwrite a working application copy just because another copy has a newer-looking version number.

Safe sources are the affected application’s original installer, its vendor’s repair or verification process, original installation media, or the exact Intel redistributable specified by that application’s vendor.

If the software is obsolete

Some older applications no longer publish their required Intel runtime separately. In that situation:

1. Locate the original installer or installation media.
2. Check whether the vendor provides a supported legacy release.
3. Install the application in a clean directory.
4. Match the application’s original architecture.
5. If it cannot run on current Windows, use an isolated compatible virtual machine where appropriate.
6. Keep the old environment separate from everyday software and important files.

A current Microsoft runtime or current Intel package cannot automatically replace an obsolete application-specific runtime.
