Who is Libra, Creature of Night?
Libra is one of Nightreign’s Nightlords. The community reference identifies him as the Equilibrious Beast and describes a capricious creature fixated on equality and fairness. He can appear as the Scale-Bearing Merchant before the boss encounter, offering power in exchange for penalties. The boss page is maintained by the community, not Bandai Namco, so its move and bargain details should be treated as version-sensitive: Libra, Creature of Night reference.
What Libra’s description says about him
The clearest lore comes from the in-game Equilibrious Beast description reproduced on the Libra reference:
“A goat-headed being who pretends to be a man, said to be able to use a dubious form of alchemy. Counterfeit gold causes loss of sanity, beckoning madness. However, those who foment madness are sure to succumb to the selfsame malady in the end.”

This text establishes the goat-headed disguise, counterfeit gold, alchemy and the connection between induced madness and eventual self-destruction. It does not establish a canonical origin for Libra. Suggestions that he is definitively based on Baphomet or another figure remain fan interpretation rather than confirmed game lore; community discussion includes speculation, not an official explanation: r/EldenRingLoreTalk discussion.
Should you accept the Scale-Bearing Merchant’s bargain?
There is no universally correct choice. The bargain is a trade: an immediate advantage for a reduction elsewhere. The Libra reference lists examples of deals that exchange an attribute increase for penalties to other attributes, health, stamina, flasks or levels. Choose according to the Nightfarer’s role, remaining expedition time and whether your party can cover the weakness.

Read the offer literally before confirming it. A strong damage increase can be a poor exchange for a health, flask or stamina reduction if Libra’s Madness pressure is already taxing your survivability. In a coordinated group, the best bargain may be the one that strengthens a specialist without undermining the team’s only healer, ranged attacker or front-line player.

Prepare for Madness
- Libra is reported to inflict Madness. Bring equipment, relic choices or consumables that reduce buildup when available to your character and expedition.
- The reference also reports false-gold pieces that reduce Madness buildup. Treat their availability and exact effect as build- and version-dependent.
- Keep an escape route and avoid spending every healing resource before the final phase. Madness pressure can turn a small positioning error into a death.
Respect physical and holy damage
The community page lists both physical and holy damage. Avoid assuming that a single resistance type solves the fight; use the defenses your current loot and party composition can realistically provide, while preserving enough mobility to evade attacks.
Break the golden sphere
During a reported meditation move, Libra can surround himself with a golden protective sphere. The reference says the barrier can be broken either by attacking it with force or by destroying nearby sigils. If the sigils are present in your version of the encounter, assign one player to remove them while others control Libra, rather than allowing the boss to meditate uninterrupted.

Use a simple party plan
- Spread out enough to avoid one Madness or area attack affecting the whole party, but stay close enough to revive and support one another.
- Call out the meditation animation immediately so the group knows whether to damage the sphere or destroy sigils.
- Keep the player with the safest positioning responsible for revives; a greedy final attack is not worth losing the expedition.
- After the barrier falls, spend your strongest damage windows while preserving stamina for the next attack pattern.
These are practical applications of the reported mechanics, not guaranteed solutions for every patch, difficulty or Nightfarer team.

That structure changes how you should judge Libra’s bargain. A penalty that is manageable in a long-term build may be dangerous when only one night remains, while a short-term attribute boost can be valuable if it helps the party reach the Nightlord with enough healing and upgraded equipment.
What changed in official updates?
Bandai Namco’s version 1.01.2 patch notes, dated June 10, 2025, list a fix for Libra repeatedly performing certain actions: version 1.01.2 patch notes. This confirms that Libra’s behavior has been patched at least once; it does not prove that every mechanic described by the community page is unchanged today. Is the official companion guide useful for Libra?
The ELDEN RING Nightreign Official Companion Guide is a broad 400-page hardcover reference with a bestiary, maps, equipment and item references, and lore material: Bandai Namco official store listing.
