libssh2-1.dll is a legitimate Windows library used by applications that need SSH, SCP, or SFTP communication, but it is not part of Windows itself. The safest fix is to identify the application that requested it and repair or reinstall that application from its official installer or package manager.
What this file actually does
libssh2-1.dll is the Windows shared-library build of libssh2, an open-source library that implements SSH2 functionality. Programs use it for secure remote connections, file transfers, Git operations, SFTP clients, cURL-related work, PHP extensions, development environments, and other tools.
It is an application DLL, not a Windows system component. It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global folder added to
PATH
The correct location depends on the software that installed it. A Git-related program might keep it inside its own installation directory. An MSYS2 MinGW environment may keep it under a package-managed bin directory. Another application may store a private copy beside its main executable.

There is no universal libssh2-1.dll file that is correct for every program. Builds can differ by architecture, compiler, dependencies, and application packaging.

The filename alone cannot identify the program responsible. Start by recording the exact application named in the error dialog. If no program is visible, check which application was recently updated, moved, removed, or configured to start with Windows.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the highest-probability solution.
- Close the application and any related background processes.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the program that displayed the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option, use the program’s own installer. Download the installer only from the application developer or vendor that supplied the program. Run it over the existing installation if the installer offers a repair or maintenance mode.
If repair does not work:
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current package from the vendor’s official source.
- Launch the program before restoring custom plugins or settings.
For a game or launcher, use its Verify files, Verify integrity, or Repair function before uninstalling it. These functions can restore a missing private DLL without removing the entire game.
A successful repair should make the original program start normally. If the same error returns immediately, check the installation path and antivirus history before trying another replacement file.
Fix 2: Check the DLL’s path and architecture
The path is an important safety check.
If the application is installed under a normal vendor directory, such as C:Program Files... or C:Program Files (x86)..., its private copy may be legitimate. A copy in C:Windows, a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves more scrutiny.
To inspect the application:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
libssh2-1.dllbeside the application executable or inside its privatebindirectory.
Do not assume that the newest available libssh2 build is suitable. A 32-bit program needs a 32-bit DLL, while a 64-bit program needs a 64-bit DLL. Mixing a manually downloaded DLL with the application’s existing files can produce 0xc000007b, “not designed to run,” or a new dependency error.
There is no universal version, size, publisher, or file description that applies to every copy. The distributor that bundled the application determines those details.

Fix 3: Update the package-managed environment
If the error comes from MSYS2, MinGW, a development shell, or software installed through a package manager, do not copy a DLL into the program manually. Update the environment and reinstall the matching package.
For a 64-bit MinGW environment, open the appropriate MSYS2 terminal and run:
pacman -Syu
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-libssh2
Follow any instruction to close and reopen the terminal, then run the update command again if requested.
For a 32-bit MinGW environment, the package name is:

Use the package matching the application’s architecture. The libssh2 package can also depend on components such as OpenSSL and zlib. If the DLL exists but still fails to load, update or reinstall the complete package and its dependencies rather than replacing only libssh2-1.dll.
For Git or another bundled tool, update or reinstall that tool using its own official Windows distribution. Do not substitute an MSYS2 copy for a DLL expected by a separate application.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a DLL during an update or after the application changes its files.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
libssh2-1.dll. - Check the full detected path.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

- The file was inside the legitimate application directory.
- The application came from its official vendor or package manager.
- The detection is clearly associated with the application update.
- You have checked the application and file source carefully.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly. After restoring a legitimate quarantined file, update the application and run another scan. If the file was found in a temporary or unexplained directory, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source instead.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
Sometimes the error names libssh2-1.dll, but the actual failure is a DLL that libssh2 needs. Depending on the package, possible dependencies include OpenSSL, zlib, MinGW runtime files, or application-specific libraries.
A dependency problem is more likely when:
libssh2-1.dllis visibly present.- Reinstalling the application did not help.
- The error changes after copying another DLL.
- The program reports “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Only one application fails while the rest of Windows works normally.
Use a reputable PE dependency viewer or Microsoft debugger tooling to inspect the application executable and identify the missing import. Then reinstall the complete application or package that supplies that dependency.
For MSVC-built software that genuinely requires the Microsoft runtime, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft. Use x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 for a 64-bit application. Installing the redistributable is not a universal fix for libssh2-1.dll; many libssh2 packages use MinGW runtimes or bundle their own dependencies.

0xc000007b often indicates that Windows received an invalid or incompatible binary. It does not prove that libssh2 itself is defective.
Check these items in order:
- Confirm whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Remove any DLL you manually copied into the application directory.
- Run the application’s repair or file-verification feature.
- Reinstall the application using the correct installer.
- Reinstall its package-managed dependencies.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not place a 32-bit copy in a 64-bit application directory, or the reverse. Do not rename libssh2-1.dll to libssh2.dll. If older software expects another filename, it needs the vendor’s exact compatible package.
Fix 7: Repair Windows only when several applications fail
libssh2-1.dll is not a Windows component, so System File Checker cannot recreate an application-private copy that never belonged to Windows. Use Windows repair commands only when several unrelated applications show loading failures or other Windows components are also damaged.
First, open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected application. If the commands report repairs, run the application’s installer repair afterward because SFC and DISM do not restore a vendor’s private DLL.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting circular. Fix 8: Consider drivers only when the timing points there
A display, storage, network, or security-driver change can indirectly expose an application problem, but drivers do not normally supply libssh2-1.dll.
If the failure began immediately after a driver update:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected to the change.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver if available, or select Update Driver.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not install a driver merely because a DLL error appeared. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the exact versions involved, while the full version performs the installation; it does not replace repairing the application that bundles libssh2-1.dll.
Do not download or register this DLL
Avoid standalone DLL download sites websites. A random copy can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, use an incompatible ABI, omit OpenSSL or zlib dependencies, or simply fail because the application installation is damaged.
Never copy it to System32, SysWOW64, or a global PATH directory. Windows normally searches an application’s executable directory before system locations, so a global copy can cause the wrong build to load and create DLL search-order risks.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. regsvr32 is intended for COM DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. libssh2 is a normal runtime library, not a COM server, so registration will not repair it.

Collect these details before contacting the application vendor:
- The exact application name and version shown in its properties
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The complete error text and error code
- The full path where the application expects the DLL
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, reinstall, or antivirus action
- Whether
libssh2-1.dllexists in the application directory - Any dependency name reported by a PE dependency viewer
- Antivirus quarantine details
If the error appears at every boot but no application opens, check Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps. Also inspect Task Scheduler Library for a stale updater, uninstaller, or removed application reference.

Is a file with this name automatically safe?
