Which fix applies to you
Use the error and the program’s location to choose the correct path:
- One installed program or game fails: repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
- Wireshark, QEMU, a GTK application, or GNU-based tooling fails: restore the application’s private files and dependency set.
p11tool, GnuTLS, or a command in an MSYS2 terminal fails: update MSYS2, then install the package matching the terminal environment and application architecture.- The error appeared after an antivirus detection: inspect quarantine before reinstalling or restoring anything.
- The file exists but the error says “entry point not found”: the wrong version or architecture is probably being loaded. Reinstall the complete application rather than replacing one DLL.
- Several unrelated applications fail: investigate broader Windows, disk, malware, or profile problems instead of repeatedly replacing this file.
What libtasn1-6.dll is
libtasn1-6.dll is the Windows runtime library associated with GNU libtasn1. The library handles ASN.1 parsing and DER encoding, which are used by software involved in certificates, TLS, and cryptographic operations. GnuTLS includes libtasn1 as part of its dependency chain.
You may encounter it indirectly in:
- MSYS2 and MinGW tools
- GnuTLS utilities such as
p11tool - Wireshark
- QEMU
- GTK-based applications
- Git-related or other GNU-library-based tools
It is normally stored beside the application executable or in that application’s bundled bin directory. In an MSYS2 installation, it belongs under the environment that owns the executable.

It is not the same file as Windows MSASN1.dll or NTASN1.dll. Windows also does not provide one universal “latest” copy that works for every application. The correct build depends on the program, architecture, runtime environment, and companion libraries.
First identify the program that requested it
Before changing files, determine which executable is failing.
- Read the complete error dialog. Note the program name and whether it says missing, cannot be found, cannot open shared object file, entry point not found, or could not load.
- If the message appears in a terminal, copy the full command and executable path. A path containing
msys32,mingw32,mingw64, orucrt64is especially useful. - Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target. The target identifies the executable and usually its installation folder.
- Open that folder and check whether the program’s neighboring DLLs and subdirectories are still present.
- Check whether the failure began after an update, interrupted installation, disk cleanup, moving the program folder, or an antivirus action.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit DLL. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit programs. The application’s architecture is what matters.
Fix a normal installed application
For a standalone Windows program, its own installer is the most reliable source for libtasn1-6.dll and the other libraries built to work with it.

Use the program’s repair or file-verification option
Many launchers provide a repair, verify, or scan function.
- Close the affected program.
- Open its launcher or management application.
- Select the affected program.
- Open its settings, menu, or Manage page.
- Choose Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the program again from its normal shortcut or launcher.
A successful repair usually restores the application’s private DLLs without changing the Windows system directories.
If the program has no launcher repair option, open Settings with Windows + I, select Apps, then Installed apps. Select the program, choose the three-dot menu, and select Advanced options if available. Try Repair first. If that does not work, try Reset, understanding that the reset may remove application settings or local data.

Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up the program’s settings or save data if the application stores them outside the cloud.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the program developer or vendor’s official website.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Install to the normal folder and allow the installer to create its complete directory structure.
- Launch the program from its installed shortcut.
Do not download libtasn1-6.dll separately from a generic DLL website. Such a file can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or lack the companion libraries the application also needs. Even a genuine DLL with the right filename may not match the program.

These programs may carry their own copy in the application directory.
Repair MSYS2, MinGW, or UCRT64
MSYS2 has separate environments and package repositories. The ordinary MSYS runtime is not interchangeable with MinGW or UCRT64 libraries.
The relevant environments include:
msysmingw32for 32-bit applicationsmingw64for 64-bit applicationsucrt64clang64
The ordinary MSYS2 package can contain msys-tasn1-6.dll, which is differently named from libtasn1-6.dll. Installing the generic package is therefore not necessarily enough for a MinGW application.
Update the complete installation
Open the MSYS2 terminal appropriate to your installation and run:
pacman -Suy
If MSYS2 closes the terminal during a core update, open a new MSYS2 terminal and run the same command again. Partial upgrades are unsupported, so do not install one library into an otherwise outdated environment.
Install the matching package
For a 32-bit MinGW application, run:
pacman -S mingw-w64-i686-libtasn1
For a 64-bit MinGW application, run:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-libtasn1
For a UCRT64 application, run:
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-libtasn1
Install the command from the matching MSYS2 environment. Do not mix files from mingw32, mingw64, ucrt64, and msys.

If the application is GnuTLS-based, reinstalling its parent package can restore the complete dependency chain. For a 64-bit MinGW GnuTLS installation, that may be:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-gnutls
If another missing DLL appears afterward, that usually means the dependency set was incomplete or out of sync. Install the package that supplies the newly named dependency using the same architecture and environment, rather than treating the changed message as proof that the first repair failed.

To find which installed package owns a file, use:
pacman -Qo /path/to/libtasn1-6.dll
To search repository metadata for the filename, run:
pacman -Fy
pacman -F libtasn1-6.dll
The result helps distinguish a missing package from a file that exists but is being loaded from the wrong location.
Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can remove a bundled DLL because of a false positive, or because the installer or application package is unsafe or tampered with.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected program or
libtasn1-6.dll. - Confirm that the application was installed from a trusted official source.
- If the vendor confirms the file is legitimate, use the available restore or allow action.
- Update or reinstall the application afterward so its complete files are present.
- Submit the detection to the application vendor or security provider if appropriate.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain an unverified DLL. If the program came from an unofficial source, uninstall it and obtain a clean installer instead.
Restore the original application folder
DLL loading often depends on the executable’s location and its neighboring directories. Moving only the executable, deleting a bin folder, extracting an update over the wrong directory, or launching a program from a copied shortcut can break dependency discovery.

Restore the original folder layout if you have a known-good backup. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall the application without moving individual files afterward.
Do not place the file in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows directory generally
Those folders are not a substitute for the application’s intended private runtime directory.
Check for a wrong version or architecture
A missing-file message is not the only possible failure. If the message changes to entry point not found, the DLL may already exist but be incompatible with the executable or another library.

Check these points:
- A 32-bit executable needs the 32-bit dependency set.
- A 64-bit executable needs the 64-bit dependency set.
- MSYS2 environments must not be mixed.
- DLLs from different application releases may expect different companion libraries.
- A file with the correct name can still be the wrong build.
The safest correction is to reinstall the application or its complete MSYS2 package group. Do not keep swapping individual DLLs until the names happen to match.
For a stubborn case, record the executable path, full error text, installation path, architecture, recent changes, antivirus history, and the DLLs beside the executable. A current dependency-inspection utility can then show which module is actually missing or incompatible.

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application-private GNU DLL, so use them when Windows itself is showing other corruption symptoms or the failure followed a broader system problem.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If these commands report repairs but the same application still cannot find libtasn1-6.dll, return to the application’s repair or reinstall process.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows repairs and trying to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader problems and show what it identifies; repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns this DLL remains the definitive fix.
System Restore is relevant only if a known recent system change caused the failure and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a normal way to obtain this third-party library.
Drivers and Windows Features
Installing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET will not normally provide libtasn1-6.dll. Enabling random items under Windows Features is also not a substitute for repairing the application package.
A driver update is relevant only if the application began failing after a graphics, storage, security-device, or other driver change, or if Device Manager shows a related device problem:

Windows + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or Roll Back Driver only when the timing and device symptoms support that diagnosis.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.
Manually hunting through hardware vendors and guessing which of many installed drivers is stale can take time; Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while installation of updates through the full version is optional. It is not a replacement for reinstalling the application that supplied libtasn1-6.dll.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 libtasn1-6.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. libtasn1-6.dll is a runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX component that you repair by registering it. Registration will not recreate missing dependencies or place the file where the application expects it.
Prevention
- Keep the application in its original directory structure.
- Complete MSYS2 updates instead of performing partial upgrades.
- Use the application’s launcher to verify files after failed updates.
- Keep antivirus enabled, but review quarantine events when a trusted application loses a DLL.
- Use the vendor’s official installer or the relevant MSYS2 package manager.
- Avoid mixing 32-bit and 64-bit libraries or different MSYS2 environments.
- Do not copy runtime DLLs into Windows system directories.
FAQ
Is libtasn1-6.dll a Windows system file?
Normally, no. It is associated with GNU libtasn1 and is usually installed by a third-party application or an MSYS2/MinGW environment.
Can I download one universal copy?
No. There is no single universally valid build. The correct file depends on the calling program, architecture, environment, and related libraries.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Normally, no. This is a GNU library, not a standard Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file.
Why did the error change after reinstalling a package?
A new missing-DLL message often exposes the next broken dependency. Repair the complete matching dependency set rather than copying isolated files.
What if only one application fails?
Repair or reinstall that application first. A single-program failure usually points to its private files, folder layout, quarantine history, or dependency set rather than Windows itself.
What if every application fails?
Stop replacing this DLL and investigate broader Windows corruption, malware, disk errors, or profile damage. DISM followed by SFC is appropriate when those wider symptoms are present.
