libwinpthread-1.dll is a MinGW-w64 runtime library, not a normal Windows system file. The safest fix is to identify the program that requested it and repair or reinstall that program with its complete, matching runtime bundle.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you were doing when the error appeared:
- A game or ordinary application will not start: repair, verify, or reinstall that application.
- GCC, Code::Blocks, CMake, Arduino, Qt, or another developer tool fails: repair the MinGW-w64 or MSYS2 toolchain and check
PATH. - The file was quarantined: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists but Windows rejects it: suspect the wrong architecture, an incompatible toolchain build, corruption, or another missing dependency.
- The problem began after a system change: use Windows repair tools or System Restore only after repairing the application.
- You downloaded the DLL separately: remove it and reinstall the owning program from its official source.
What libwinpthread-1.dll belongs to
The filename belongs to winpthreads, the MinGW-w64 implementation of POSIX-style threads for Windows programs. GCC-built applications can use it for threading support, and it may be bundled with programs built using MinGW-w64 components.

You may encounter the error in a Qt/MinGW application, an Arduino toolchain, a game, KiCad, LMMS, Citra, or another native Windows program. The important point is ownership: the application or development environment that needs the DLL should normally supply it.
Windows does not normally install libwinpthread-1.dll into System32 or SysWOW64. There is no single universal version, size, or architecture that is correct for every application.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is usually unrelated. It supplies MSVC runtime files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll and MSVCP140.dll, not the MinGW-w64 winpthreads runtime.
Fix the application that shows the error
This is the most likely solution for a game, installer, or ordinary desktop application.
1. Identify the owning program
Look at the error dialog and note:
- The application name in the title bar
- The executable mentioned in the message
- The shortcut you used
- The folder containing the program
If you are unsure, right-click the application shortcut, select Properties, and read the path beside Target. That executable is the program whose installation needs repair. Do not search your entire drive for a random copy of the DLL and copy it into unrelated folders.
2. Use the program’s repair option
Open Settings with Win+I, then select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
Find the affected program, select its menu button, and choose Advanced options if available. Use Repair first. If Repair is not offered or does not work, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s settings and local data.
Some desktop applications provide their own Repair option in Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Select the program, choose Change, and follow its repair wizard.

3. Reinstall from the official source
If repair fails:
- Back up application settings or saved data if the program stores them locally.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from the application’s official developer or publisher.
- Install it to its normal location.
- Start the program without copying DLLs from another computer.
For a Steam game, open Steam, select Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties. Select Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files. Steam should replace missing or damaged files. Start the game again after verification completes.
A proper reinstall restores the complete set of files, not just the one named in the error. It remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to a specific game or application.
Repair MinGW-w64, MSYS2, GCC, Arduino, or Qt
If the error appears while compiling code, launching a compiler, or running a developer-built program, the toolchain may be incomplete or Windows may be finding the wrong installation.
Check which installation Windows is using
Open Command Prompt and run:
where gcc
where g++
where make
where libwinpthread-1.dll
In PowerShell, run:
Get-Command gcc
Get-Command libwinpthread-1.dll -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Review every returned path. Multiple MinGW or MSYS2 installations can cause a program to load a DLL from a different environment than the one that built it.
Remove obsolete MinGW and MSYS2 entries from PATH through Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Environment Variables. Edit the user or system Path carefully and keep only the toolchain directories you actively use. Open a new terminal after changing it.
Install the matching MSYS2 package
Use these commands only if the program is built or managed through MSYS2. Open the MSYS2 shell that corresponds to your environment and update it:
pacman -Syu
If MSYS2 asks you to close the shell and restart it, do so, then run the update command again as instructed by the package manager.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
Install the package that matches the application:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-libwinpthread
For a 32-bit MinGW environment, use:
pacman -S mingw-w64-i686-libwinpthread
For the UCRT64 environment, use:
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-libwinpthread
The corresponding locations are the environment’s bin directories, such as /mingw64/bin, /mingw32/bin, or /ucrt64/bin.
Do not install all three packages to guess at the answer. Use the environment that built the executable. For a standalone MinGW distribution, repair or reinstall the complete toolchain from its distributor instead of taking one DLL from an unrelated installation.
Match architecture and runtime variants
A 64-bit Windows computer can run 32-bit applications. Therefore, the correct DLL depends on the application, not simply on whether Windows itself is 64-bit.
A 32-bit executable requires a 32-bit dependency. A 64-bit executable requires a 64-bit dependency. MinGW-w64 environments can also differ by runtime and toolchain, including MinGW 32-bit, MinGW 64-bit, UCRT64, and other environments.
A file that exists can still produce:
- “Not designed to run on Windows”
0xc000007b- A procedure entry-point error
- A message saying the DLL is missing even though you can see it
These symptoms can indicate the wrong architecture, a different MinGW build, corruption, a blocked file, or a missing dependency of the DLL. Replace the complete runtime bundle from the application or toolchain vendor rather than replacing libwinpthread-1.dll alone.
Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may remove or quarantine a legitimate bundled runtime, particularly after an application update or an installation from an unfamiliar source.
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Select the relevant detection and inspect:
- The file path
- The application that installed it
- The detection details
- Whether the installer came from an official source
Only consider Restore or Allow on device when the application and installer are trustworthy, the path is expected, and the file was obtained from the official vendor. Then reinstall or repair the application so the complete bundle is restored.

If the DLL came from an unofficial download site, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy, run a full scan, and reinstall the owning application from its official source.
Do not copy it to System32 or use regsvr32
Do not make C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 the default destination. Windows searches the application directory early in its DLL search order, and a private copy beside the correct executable normally avoids conflicts with other programs. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.
Putting a DLL in a system directory can introduce the wrong architecture, affect unrelated applications, hide a broken installation, or create a DLL search-order security problem. A file copied into an unrelated folder may not be searched at all.
regsvr32 is also not the solution:
regsvr32 libwinpthread-1.dll
This runtime library is not normally a COM or ActiveX server. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, as described by Microsoft’s DLL registration documentation. Registering this runtime will not make an application find it.

SFC and DISM do not download or install the MinGW-w64 runtime. Use them when Windows itself has signs of protected system-file corruption, repeated component failures, or broader operating-system problems.
Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to complete, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the application. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its system-file repair instructions.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, but it will not supply a missing third-party libwinpthread-1.dll. If the application still fails, return to its installer or toolchain.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.

A missing MinGW-w64 runtime is not normally a graphics, chipset, audio, or Windows driver problem. Update drivers when the application also crashes with display errors, hardware failures, or a device problem in Device Manager.
Press Win+X, select Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, and choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers. If Windows finds nothing, obtain the driver from the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer. Restart after installation.
If the failure began immediately after a driver change, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.

Use System Restore after a recent change
If the error began immediately after software, a driver, or a Windows change, and a suitable restore point exists:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select OK.
- Choose an earlier restore point.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next → Finish.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files unchanged. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If the DLL is present but still will not load
Check these points in order:
- Confirm you are launching the expected executable and not an older shortcut.
- Inspect the application directory named by the error.
- Check whether the DLL is 32-bit or 64-bit and match it to the executable.
- Look for companion files such as
libgcc_s_seh-1.dllandlibstdc++-6.dll. - Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Remove duplicate MinGW or MSYS2 directories from
PATH. - Repair the complete application or toolchain.
- Use a trusted dependency inspection tool if you are the developer or administrator of the application.
The named DLL may be present while one of its own dependencies is missing or damaged. Replacing the named file repeatedly will not resolve that underlying loader failure.
Developer deployment notes
A MinGW-w64 application should ship the exact runtime files produced by the same toolchain. Depending on the build, the deployment commonly includes:
libwinpthread-1.dll
libgcc_s_seh-1.dll
libstdc++-6.dll
Place the required private runtime files beside the executable unless the project deliberately uses another supported deployment design. Copying the exact files from the verified build output into that application directory can be legitimate. Copying a single DLL from an unrelated machine, package, or architecture is not a reliable deployment method.
Test the packaged application on a clean machine or clean profile, and verify that the executable and all dependencies come from the same toolchain environment. Static linking may be possible in some projects, subject to licensing, compatibility, and project policy, but it does not justify mixing runtime builds.
FAQ
Is libwinpthread-1.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is normally supplied by MinGW-w64, MSYS2, or an application that bundles MinGW-w64-built components.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable install it?
Normally no. Visual C++ Redistributable supports MSVC-built applications. libwinpthread-1.dll belongs to the MinGW-w64 winpthreads runtime.
Should I download the DLL by itself?
No. Random DLL sites may provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not include the other required dependencies. Use the application’s official installer or the matching toolchain package manager.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
No. It is a runtime library, not normally a registration-based COM or ActiveX DLL.
Why does copying it to System32 sometimes appear to work?
It may cause Windows to find a copy, but it can also load the wrong architecture or affect other programs. Restore the correct complete bundle to the owning application’s directory instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them for broader Windows component corruption. They do not install this third-party runtime, so application repair or toolchain repair remains the primary fix.
