It also distinguishes three different kinds of relationship: an explicit romance choice made by the player; a close bond that can be read romantically without being a fixed romance route; and a relationship established in the characters’ backstory. A story can be emotionally important without giving the player equal control over it.
The Life Is Strange romance stories, ranked
1. Chloe and Rachel — Life Is Strange: Before the Storm
Chloe and Rachel take the top spot because their relationship is both a major emotional thread in Before the Storm and an important part of the history behind the original Life Is Strange. A GDC conference narrative review describes them as having been romantically involved before the first game. A Trinity College Dublin thesis discusses how Before the Storm lets Chloe signal that she wants more than friendship.

This is not quite the same as choosing between two fully defined romance routes: the relationship’s backstory is already established, while the player’s influence is expressed through Chloe’s interactions. That blend of history, emotional significance, and some room to shape how Chloe expresses herself makes it the strongest overall storyline here.
2. Max and Chloe — Life Is Strange
Max and Chloe’s bond is central to the original game’s character dynamic. Its prominence and emotional weight put it near the top, but players should distinguish that central relationship from a fixed, explicit romance route. A GDC narrative review and academic discussions treat it as a relationship players may interpret romantically; that interpretation is not the same thing as the game offering a single, clearly defined romance choice.
That ambiguity is part of its appeal: players can read the connection in their own way. It also means Max and Chloe rank below Chloe and Rachel as a romance storyline specifically, because the romantic framing is less explicit.

3. Alex and Steph — Life Is Strange: True Colors
Steph is one of the two romance options identified for Alex in True Colors. That makes this an explicit player-directed choice, rather than a relationship whose romantic meaning rests mainly on interpretation or backstory. An interview with voice actors Katy Bentz and Mallory Littleton confirms that Alex can pursue Steph, pursue Ryan, or choose neither.
Steph ranks slightly above Ryan here as a matter of editorial judgment, not because the available sources establish that one route is better, more popular, or more consequential. The sources support the existence of both choices, but do not provide enough detail to compare their scene-by-scene development or precise effects on the ending.
4. Alex and Ryan — Life Is Strange: True Colors
Ryan is the other explicit romance option for Alex, and the player can choose him instead of Steph—or choose neither. His route shares the advantages of being a clear player-directed option, but the available material does not establish enough about its development or ending effects to make a detailed comparison with Steph’s.

That lower placement is about narrative prominence in this ranking, not a judgment about players who prefer Warren’s route. The available sources do not support a detailed account of its exact scenes or a claim about how many players choose it.

Steph and Ryan are the clearest like-for-like comparison in this ranking: both are player-directed options for Alex, and choosing neither is also possible.

Why this is not a definitive ranking of every game
The available sources support the original Life Is Strange, Before the Storm, and True Colors more firmly than they support a complete franchise-wide list. They do not establish the complete romance options for Life Is Strange 2 or Double Exposure, so those games are not ranked here. Xbox Wire’s 2026 Reunion feature confirms that earlier choices carry forward, but does not establish additional romance routes; a 2026 PC Gamer review likewise does not enumerate every route. Treating this list as exhaustive would claim more than those sources show.
