There is no universal cost or reliability winner. A spare PC can be cheaper if you already own suitable hardware, its power use is modest, and your home upload connection is stable. A Linode—now offered under Akamai—moves the workload to a cloud server, but its monthly instance price is only part of the calculation: the stream’s outbound data must fit the plan’s transfer allowance, and the server must suit the job. First decide whether you are relaying an already encoded feed or encoding/transcoding video; those workloads are not interchangeable.

Linode vs. a spare PC: what actually decides it?
Compare the setup you would really use, not just a cloud plan’s headline price. A Linode bill depends on the selected instance and any applicable transfer overage. A spare PC’s ongoing cost depends on electricity, any incremental internet cost, and the computer’s readiness to stay powered and recover after problems.
Most importantly, distinguish a relay from an encoder. Forwarding a pre-encoded stream may require less compute than decoding, compositing, or transcoding video. Akamai’s published plan specifications do not establish that a particular shared-CPU VM can encode a particular stream; there is no workload-specific benchmark here. Likewise, without your PC’s hardware, measured power draw, electricity tariff, and upload performance, a meaningful local cost or performance verdict cannot be calculated.

Akamai’s North America pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these shared-CPU plans:

These are provider-listed prices and specifications for North America, not a promise that either plan can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, or codec. Check the selected region’s current plan and transfer allowance before committing. Akamai’s plan-types documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, describes Accelerated Linodes as using dedicated CPUs and VPUs and lists that family from $280/month. That is a different workload and price tier from the shared-CPU plans; it still does not replace testing your own stream.

Estimate outbound transfer at your chosen bitrate
A continuous stream uses network transfer as well as compute. For a rough decimal-unit estimate, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate gigabytes per day, then multiply by 30 for a 30-day month. For example, at 10 Mbps: 10 × 10.8 = 108 GB per day, or about 3,240 GB for 30 days. This is an estimate, not a provider billing calculation. Verify how Akamai counts transfer and what happens if you exceed the allowance before treating it as billable usage.
Use the bitrate of the feed leaving your server, not merely the source file’s size. If the server transcodes the video, account for the output bitrate you intend to send. If you stream multiple outputs, estimate each stream’s outbound traffic and add them together.

What a spare PC costs and demands
A spare computer has no new purchase cost if it is already suitable, but “already owned” does not mean “free to run.” Measure its power draw during the actual streaming workload and apply your electricity tariff over the time it will be on. Include any incremental internet expense only if your plan or usage makes that relevant. There is no universal dollar comparison without those local measurements.
The PC also depends on your home network and power. Confirm that upload capacity is sufficient for the outgoing bitrate with headroom, and consider whether router, ISP, or power interruptions would stop the stream. Plan how the operating system and streaming software will restart or reconnect after a crash or dropped connection. A PC may be the practical choice when its hardware and connection already meet the workload and you are willing to operate it; it is not automatically the cheaper or more reliable choice.

Set YouTube’s stream assumptions before comparing
The bitrate and encoding configuration determine both bandwidth and, in some cases, processing needs. YouTube’s current English encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. It recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. Recommendations differ by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the relevant row in YouTube’s current guidance rather than applying the 1080p/30 figure to another format.
Use the same target resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your Linode and PC estimates. YouTube also advises testing audio and motion similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health during the event. A successful test is useful operational evidence, not an uptime guarantee for either hosting option.

Run the DIY stream as a test before relying on it
- Define the workload. Write down whether you will relay an already encoded feed or encode, composite, or transcode video. Record the number of simultaneous outputs and the intended YouTube resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Set the YouTube encoder target. Use the current YouTube guidance for that format: RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds), and the applicable bitrate recommendation. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, the cited English guidance recommends 10 Mbps.
- Calculate transfer and local power costs. Estimate outbound data with bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 for GB/day, then × 30 for a 30-day month. Check the provider’s transfer accounting. For the PC, measure power draw under load and use your local electricity tariff.
- Choose the host based on constraints. For Linode, verify the current regional plan, allowance, and whether your workload is a relay or needs encoding. For a PC, verify the hardware, cooling, sustained upload, and recovery behavior. Do not infer encoding capacity from a plan’s vCPU count alone.
- Test the complete stream. Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream using representative audio and motion. Check YouTube stream health and watch for dropped frames, unstable upload, audio issues, or repeated disconnects.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm what happens after the encoder process stops, the server or PC reboots, or the internet connection drops and returns. Do not treat a single successful test as proof of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Which should you choose?
- Choose the spare PC if you already have suitable hardware, measured electricity cost is acceptable, and your home upload and power are stable enough for the stream. You must also be comfortable maintaining and recovering the machine.
- Choose Linode/Akamai if you prefer a remote cloud host and your tested workload fits a plan’s compute and transfer limits at an acceptable total cost. Include transfer in the calculation, not only the instance price.
