One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a 24/7 YouTube loop from a virtual private server (VPS), compare the monthly compute charge and the server’s outbound transfer—not just the advertised starting price. At 1080p30, YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 10 Mbps, which works out to about 3,017 GiB sent from the VPS to YouTube over 30 days, before protocol overhead. That can exceed the included transfer on entry plans from either provider.
There is no evidence here for a single cheapest provider for every Indian setup: exact comparable plans, selected India-region prices and, for Akamai Cloud (formerly Linode), a universal India overage rate are not established. The right choice depends on your stream bitrate, selected plan, region and any transfer allowance shared with other servers on your account.
What the VPS bandwidth estimate should include
In this setup, the VPS sends one continuous encoder feed to YouTube’s ingest servers. Viewers watch through YouTube, so their playback is not additional VPS outbound-stream traffic. Estimate the VPS-to-YouTube feed from the configured bitrate and runtime; leave headroom for protocol overhead and reconnects.
| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate transfer over 30 days | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB | Decimal units; calculated from bitrate and 30 days, before overhead. |
| 4 Mbps | 1.30 TB, or about 1,207 GiB | Calculated from bitrate and 30 days, before overhead. |
| 10 Mbps | 3.24 TB, or about 3,017 GiB | Calculated from bitrate and 30 days, before overhead. |
These are planning calculations, not provider measurements. Actual bytes can vary with audio, container and protocol overhead, reconnects, and bitrate behavior. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate to estimate the feed, then include a margin.

Which bitrate to plan around
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. It also recommends constant bitrate encoding, RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Test with realistic audio and motion, then monitor YouTube stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
What the providers’ published starting figures tell you
The figures below are entry points, not matched plans or guaranteed India checkout quotes. Akamai Cloud’s Asia-Pacific pricing page displays the listed legacy shared-CPU examples in USD. DigitalOcean describes its Bundled Droplets separately from v5 Droplets: Bundled plans have monthly caps, while v5 plans use actual-hour pricing. Confirm the current catalog, region, plan resources and final price before committing.
| Provider and published entry | Resources and included transfer shown | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Akamai Cloud (Linode) Nanode 1 GB: $5/month | 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage, 1 TB transfer | Asia-Pacific pricing-page example; not a guaranteed India checkout quote. |

Why a low starting price is not the monthly stream cost
At the recommended 1080p30 H.264 bitrate, the estimated 3,017 GiB per 30-day month is above both DigitalOcean’s published 500 GiB/month entry allowance floor and Akamai’s 1 TB Nanode example allowance. For each actual plan, compare its allowance with estimated egress and calculate the excess. The Nanode’s price and transfer allowance do not establish that its CPU is sufficient for every loop-streaming setup: simply relaying or remuxing an already encoded file differs from transcoding, and no resource-size benchmark is established here.
How transfer charges differ
DigitalOcean: calculate the team-wide pool
DigitalOcean pools included outbound transfer cumulatively across a team’s Droplets. Unused allowance does not roll over and cannot be transferred between teams. Additional outbound transfer is documented at $0.01 per GiB; inbound transfer is free. A single Droplet can therefore draw on unused allowance from other Droplets in the same team, so estimate the team’s total outbound usage rather than treating each server’s allowance in isolation. See DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation, verified 14 September 2026.
Akamai Cloud: confirm the rate for the selected region
Akamai says transfer overage depends on service region. The material available here does not establish one universal India overage rate for every plan, so check the applicable rate in Cloud Manager for the selected service and region. See Akamai’s network transfer usage and costs documentation.

Choose an India region, then verify the actual plan
Akamai identifies Chennai and Mumbai as core India sites, stating that they are optimized for the India market. Its guidance recommends Singapore or Sydney for workloads serving wider Asia-Pacific or communicating with Akamai core sites outside India. DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its data center locations. These are provider location statements, not a latency comparison; choose a selectable region that suits your workload and verify availability in the live catalog.

- Fix the stream specification. State resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate and runtime. For example, 1080p30 at 10 Mbps for a 30-day month estimates about 3,017 GiB before overhead.
- Choose the actual plan and region. Record its monthly compute charge, CPU, RAM, storage and included outbound transfer. Do not equate the two providers’ starting prices as if their resources and allowances matched.
- Apply the correct allowance rules. For DigitalOcean, account for the team’s pooled allowance and subtract it from estimated outbound use. For Akamai, use the allowance and regional overage rate applicable to the selected service in Cloud Manager.
- Include only costs your setup uses. Add separately selected services only when they are part of the build. Recheck current pricing and billing behavior before purchase.
Using the published entry figures alone is not enough to name a winner: the required matched India-region plan sizes and final applicable transfer charges are not established. Your quality target and whether you relay pre-encoded video or transcode it also matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a self-managed loop stream requires
A VPS price comparison assumes you will configure and operate a process that continuously sends the recording to YouTube. YouTube’s setup guidance says to create or select a stream key, enter it in the encoder and configure the stream URL. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. A loop setup also needs a way to keep the process running, monitor it and restart it if it stops; provider-specific deployment instructions or resource benchmarks are not established here.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream. Get its stream URL and stream key using YouTube’s live stream settings guidance. Treat the key as a secret; do not publish or share it.
- Configure your encoder or relay. Point it at YouTube’s ingest URL, enter the key, choose RTMPS where available, and set the bitrate and keyframe interval to fit YouTube’s guidance and your chosen resolution.
- Keep the loop process supervised. Configure it to repeat the intended media and arrange monitoring and restart behavior. A continuously running VPS process is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Test before relying on it. Check YouTube’s stream health with representative video and audio, and confirm the loop resumes as intended after a process or connection interruption.
Using a prerecorded video as a live feed does not remove the need to follow YouTube’s policies. Use media you have the rights to stream, and check YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules for your channel and content.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the simplest alternative to a self-managed VPS for a YouTube loop: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Common cost-estimate mistakes
- Using compute price as total cost: include outbound transfer and applicable overage, not just the VPS monthly charge.
- Comparing unmatched entry plans: compare CPU, RAM, storage, region and transfer allowance for the selected configurations.
- Ignoring the runtime: calculate for a full month of continuous streaming, not a few hours of sample use.
- Counting YouTube viewers as VPS egress: in this architecture, the VPS sends the feed to YouTube; viewer playback is hosted by YouTube.
- Using per-Droplet bandwidth in isolation: DigitalOcean’s allowance pools across the team, so include the team’s other Droplet usage.
- Assuming one Akamai overage rate applies everywhere: check the rate for the service region you select.
- Assuming a relay and a transcoder need the same plan: processing requirements vary, and the listed examples do not establish a suitable size for every encoding workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a YouTube loop stream use the VPS’s bandwidth for viewer playback?
No. In the architecture covered here, the VPS sends the encoder feed to YouTube; viewers watch through YouTube.
Does DigitalOcean’s included Droplet transfer reset or pool across accounts?
Its allowance pools across Droplets on the same team, does not roll over, and cannot be transferred between teams.
Can the published entry prices identify the cheaper provider for an Indian 24/7 stream?
No. The entry figures do not establish matched India-region configurations and final applicable egress charges for both providers.
