Both Akamai Cloud (Linode) and Hetzner Cloud can host a virtual server that loops an encoded video to YouTube Live. Neither is a universal winner: the decision depends chiefly on the selected plan’s outbound-transfer terms, region, encoding workload and the effort you can put into monitoring and recovery. At 10 Mbps continuously for 30 days, a stream sends about 3.24 TB before overhead—enough that bandwidth charges can matter more than a small difference in server price.
Choose the operating model before the provider
A Linode or Hetzner Cloud server is a do-it-yourself option: you configure and maintain an encoder on a virtual machine, supply YouTube’s stream credentials, and arrange restarts and monitoring. A cloud VM does not itself ensure that YouTube keeps a broadcast uninterrupted.

How Linode and Hetzner differ
Akamai Cloud (Linode)
Akamai’s core-region Linodes offer Linux virtual machines with shared or dedicated vCPU options. Documented outbound-transfer allowances range from 1–20 TB depending on plan; excess transfer may be billed, and price and features vary by region. Many services accrue hourly charges up to a monthly cap, excluding network-transfer overages. Starting July 1, 2026, specified G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes and additional IPv4 addresses are billed for actual hours without a monthly price cap. Akamai’s plan-selection guidance identifies live streaming as a workload relevant to accelerated compute, but acceleration is aimed at video processing or transcoding. For a loop that sends an already encoded file without costly re-encoding, test a modest VM first; consider more compute if you must transcode, composite graphics or produce multiple outputs. This is a workload-based recommendation, not a benchmark.
Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner offers shared-resource and dedicated-vCPU cloud-server classes. Its product guidance describes shared servers as suitable for variable or low-to-medium CPU use and dedicated vCPU plans for sustained high-CPU and production workloads. Listed cloud locations include Germany, Finland, Singapore and the United States. Hetzner describes included traffic and priced additional transfer, but the exact comparable allowance and overage for a specific candidate plan and region must be checked in its live calculator and current network documentation. What the available facts do not settle
They do not establish a location-matched all-in quote, an exact Hetzner traffic allowance and overage for your candidate configuration, or a universal price or reliability winner. No provider benchmark or uptime test establishes that one will hold a continuous feed better. Compare the live terms for the region and plan you would actually use.
Estimate transfer before comparing server prices
At a sustained 10 Mbps, 30 days of continuous outbound video is approximately 3.24 TB in decimal units before overhead: 10,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is a calculation, not a provider quote. Your actual use depends on configured bitrate and hours online; allow headroom for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, backup feeds or additional outputs.

YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. For example, a 10 Mbps stream calls for planning around 12 Mbps of available outbound capacity, before allowing for other traffic or redundancy. A provider’s advertised link speed is not proof of a guaranteed stable route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings to choose encoding parameters. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. For H.264 at 1080p30, the listed minimum is 5 Mbps and recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps. These encoder recommendations help size the outbound connection; they do not determine your cloud provider’s bill by themselves.

Compare candidate plans on equal terms
- Choose an operating region. Compare candidate plans in roughly the same region and note quote date, currency and tax basis. Pick a location appropriate to your operations; viewer geography alone does not identify the best YouTube ingest route.
- Calculate expected transfer. Use the configured bitrate and actual hours online, then add headroom for overhead, restarts and any backup or extra output. Compare that estimate with the selected plan’s included outbound traffic.
- Verify transfer billing. For Linode, confirm the plan’s allowance, overage terms and whether the relevant service has a monthly cap or an uncapped hourly rule. For Hetzner, verify the exact region/plan allowance and extra-transfer price in current documentation or the calculator; broad descriptions are not a substitute for the specific numbers.
- Match CPU to the encoder job. A file that is already encoded and simply looped may need less CPU than one that is transcoded, overlaid or scaled. Test the actual software and workload before paying for dedicated or accelerated compute.
- Include all recurring costs. Add the VM, any public IPv4 address, transfer overage, storage, backups, taxes and monitoring or redundancy you require. Compare the resulting monthly total, not just the headline VM rate.
- Plan for continuity. Arrange a process supervisor or equivalent restart plan, health checks, logs, stream-health monitoring and a recovery procedure. A VM can restart an encoder process, but it cannot guarantee YouTube will retain an uninterrupted broadcast.
If projected transfer sits comfortably within the allowance and the VM sustains the chosen encode, choose the lower all-in quote that meets your region and operational requirements. If traffic nears an included allowance, compare overage charges before treating a small CPU-price difference as decisive.

For a self-managed setup, create or configure the YouTube Live event and use the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live settings in your encoder. Keep the key private. Select RTMPS where your encoder supports it, use a constant bitrate, set the keyframe interval to two seconds (and no more than four), and set bitrate and resolution to match both YouTube’s guidance and the server’s tested outbound capacity.

Test the feed and monitor YouTube stream health before relying on it. Network disruption can break a stream, so maintain logs and a recovery path rather than assuming a server process that is running means the broadcast is healthy. Also ensure the video and audio are cleared for live use: YouTube’s technical encoder requirements do not grant rights to music, footage or other material.
