Live Streaming Glossary: Common Terms Explained

A practical glossary of live streaming terms, following the path from source capture and encoding to platform ingest and viewer playback.

A live stream moves from a camera, game, or other audio/video source through an encoder and an internet connection to a platform, which processes and distributes it to viewers. Understanding that path makes terms such as bitrate, ingest, stream key, and latency easier to distinguish—and helps you find the right setting when a broadcast has problems.

1. Source capture: what goes into a stream

Live streaming

Live streaming is broadcasting audio and video over the internet in real time. A creator sends a stream to a platform; the platform receives and distributes it so viewers can watch. The broadcast may use a game feed, camera, microphone, or a combination of sources. Twitch describes this path as a broadcaster sending a stream over the public internet to Twitch’s ingest system, then onward for distribution (Twitch streaming setup).

Source

The source is the audio or video being captured: for example, gameplay, a camera, a microphone, or a mix. A console or computer may produce the game image, while separate audio devices supply voice or game sound. The source is not the same as the encoder: the source provides material, and the encoder prepares it for delivery.

Do you need a microphone or camera?

No. Twitch says a microphone and camera are not required to stream. They are useful if you want spoken commentary, an on-camera presentation, or collaboration, but gameplay can be streamed without either (Twitch Creator Camp: Streaming 101). A USB streaming microphone is one possible equipment category for voice, not a requirement or a specific model recommendation.

2. Encoding: preparing audio and video

Encoder and encoding

An encoder is the software, console, device, or dedicated hardware that prepares audio and video and sends the resulting stream to a platform. Encoding compresses the source into a format and data rate that can be transmitted over the internet. You do not necessarily need a separate encoder box: Twitch lists software encoders, consoles, and hardware encoders as possible ways to create a stream (Twitch streaming setup).

Codec

A codec is a method for compressing and decompressing audio or video. The chosen codec affects how the stream is encoded and what the receiving platform can accept. Codec support depends on the ingest protocol and platform; for example, YouTube’s published ingest comparison lists different codec support for RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS/DASH (YouTube Live encoder settings). Check the destination’s current guidance and your encoder’s compatibility before choosing a format.

Resolution

Resolution is the dimensions of the video image, commonly expressed as width by height. Higher resolution can show more image detail, but generally requires more bitrate and encoding capacity under Twitch’s guidance. It is only one part of visual quality: the available upload bandwidth, codec, frame rate, and encoder performance also matter (Twitch Inspector glossary and stream health tools).

Frame rate (FPS)

Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), is how often the video sends a new frame. Higher frame rates can make movement appear smoother, but can also require more encoding resources. Resolution and frame rate should be chosen with the computer or device’s encoding capacity and the connection’s upload capacity in mind (Twitch Inspector glossary and stream health tools).

Bitrate and ingest bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of data sent per second. Ingest bitrate is the data rate your encoder sends to the platform; it is not the viewer’s download speed. Increasing bitrate uses more of your upload capacity and can improve image quality only up to practical limits. It is not a standalone quality control: resolution, frame rate, codec, and the encoder’s ability to keep up all interact with it (Twitch Inspector glossary and stream health tools; YouTube Live encoder settings).

Choose a bitrate that your connection can sustain rather than setting it as high as possible. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other household or office traffic. If the platform’s health tools report unstable transmission, use those measurements to guide a change instead of assuming that a higher bitrate will fix the problem.

CBR and VBR

CBR (constant bitrate) aims to keep the data rate steady; VBR (variable bitrate) lets it vary with the content. These are encoder rate-control modes, not codecs. Twitch says to use CBR whenever possible on its platform, and YouTube also lists CBR in its encoder recommendations. Treat that as platform-specific guidance and check the current requirements for the destination you are using (Twitch Inspector glossary and stream health tools; YouTube Live encoder settings).

Keyframe interval

A keyframe is a complete reference frame that helps a decoder reconstruct the video. The keyframe interval is the time between keyframes. For YouTube, the encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Twitch warns that changing its default can cause viewing problems on some devices. Follow the destination’s current recommendation rather than treating one setting as universal (YouTube Live encoder settings; Twitch Inspector glossary and stream health tools).

3. Upload and ingest: getting the stream to the platform

Ingest and ingest server

Ingest is the platform’s receiving stage: the broadcast arrives there, is associated with the correct account or stream, and is prepared for distribution. An ingest server is the receiving endpoint your encoder connects to. The platform’s ingest tools and health indicators can help identify whether a problem occurs while sending the stream, before it reaches viewers (Twitch streaming setup; Twitch Inspector).

RTMP

RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It is one protocol used to send a live stream from an encoder to a platform’s ingest endpoint. Twitch uses RTMP for ingest, and YouTube supports it as well. RTMP is not the stream key: the protocol describes how the stream is sent, while the key is an authorization credential (Twitch streaming setup; YouTube Live encoder settings).

RTMPS

RTMPS is a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS; encryption protects the connection while data is in transit to YouTube’s servers. Whether it is available in a particular encoder depends on that software and destination’s compatibility, so verify the current settings for both (YouTube Live encoder settings).

HLS and DASH

HLS and DASH are HTTP-based, segment-oriented protocols that YouTube supports for ingest. YouTube’s comparison lists additional codec support for HLS/DASH than for RTMP/RTMPS, which can suit some high-resolution use cases. Because the video is sent in segments, HLS/DASH typically have greater latency than RTMP. These are YouTube-specific choices in this context, not universal options across streaming platforms (YouTube Live encoder settings).

RTMP URL or broadcast URL

An RTMP URL (also called a server URL or broadcast URL in some encoder interfaces) identifies the ingest endpoint to which the encoder sends the stream. It tells the software where to connect; the stream key separately authorizes the stream or channel. Use the endpoint supplied by the platform rather than copying one from an unrelated account or service (YouTube Live encoder settings).

Stream key

A stream key is a secret authorization credential that connects encoder software to a channel or account. Treat it like a password: do not share it, publish it, or show it on stream. If it is exposed, use the platform’s account controls to replace or reset it before broadcasting again (Twitch stream key FAQ).

Upload bandwidth

Upload bandwidth is the capacity of your internet connection to send data. Your stream’s ingest bitrate must fit within that capacity, with headroom for network variation and other traffic. A fast download connection alone does not establish that your upload is sufficient. If transmission is unstable, check the platform’s stream-health tools and the connection’s upload performance before changing video settings (Twitch Inspector).

4. Platform processing and delivery

Processing and distribution

After ingest, the platform processes the incoming broadcast and distributes it to viewers. The broadcaster’s outgoing ingest bitrate and a viewer’s playback connection are different parts of the path: a creator can send a stable stream while an individual viewer still has trouble receiving it, or the reverse. When diagnosing an issue, identify which end reports the problem rather than treating every playback interruption as an encoder fault (Twitch streaming setup).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Latency

Latency is the delay between capture or transmission and what a viewer sees. It depends on the platform’s mode and delivery path, as well as the ingest protocol. YouTube says HLS/DASH ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. If near-real-time interaction matters, consult the platform’s current latency modes and protocol guidance rather than assuming all streams have the same delay (YouTube Live encoder settings).

5. Playback problems and stream health

Buffering

Buffering is a pause or delay in playback while a viewer’s player waits for more data. It can reflect conditions on the viewer’s connection or playback device, delivery conditions, or problems earlier in the stream path. A viewer’s buffering does not, by itself, identify the cause; check the platform’s stream-health information and compare whether the issue affects one viewer or many.

Dropped or unstable events

These terms describe interruptions or irregularities in sending or receiving a stream. A weak or variable upload connection, an encoder that cannot keep up, or a configuration mismatch can be relevant, but symptoms alone do not prove which is responsible. Twitch Inspector provides stream health and specification details; use the destination platform’s diagnostics to check what is actually happening before making changes (Twitch Inspector).

Practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm that the encoder is connected to the correct platform endpoint and that the stream key is current. Do not paste the key into public messages or screenshots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Check the platform’s stream-health or inspector view for errors and measured ingest details. Use the destination’s own diagnostics where available.

  3. Compare the encoder’s bitrate with the upload capacity available to the streaming device. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce the outgoing data rate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate.

  4. Check that the selected codec, rate-control mode, and keyframe interval match the platform’s current recommendations and are supported by the encoder.

  5. If the ingest is healthy but only some viewers report buffering, investigate playback-side conditions rather than changing the broadcaster’s settings without evidence.

6. Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running

A glossary term worth separating from ordinary live capture is a prerecorded video streamed as a live broadcast. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video, add the stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content rules before streaming material you did not create or do not have rights to use. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.

7. Copyright and reused content: what streamers should check

Having a technical ability to stream a video does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it or that it complies with platform policies. Before using prerecorded material, make sure you own it or have the necessary permissions, and review the destination’s current copyright and monetization rules. A stream that runs continuously is still subject to those requirements.
