For a reliable YouTube Live stream, choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain, then set the encoder to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that codec and format. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and leave about 20% upload headroom. Test the complete setup before going live.
Choose settings for YouTube Live
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not universal settings for other platforms or guarantees of picture quality. Check the current guidance for your destination before streaming elsewhere. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; use RTMPS where available, which YouTube describes as a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. For advanced video settings, it lists square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR; it lists H.265 for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR in the guidance consulted. Recommended YouTube ingest bitrate
Use the row matching the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. The recommendations are in Mbps; they are separate from YouTube’s minimum ranges. For example, at 1080p60 the listed minimums are 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264, while the recommendations are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p / 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guide provides the complete settings and bitrate recommendations. A higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for more bitrate in this table, but the best choice depends on your upload capacity, the motion and detail in the video, and the viewing experience you want.

Check upload bandwidth and stability
Your stream’s total bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth actually available to the encoder—not your advertised download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” A shared office or home connection may provide less bandwidth to your stream than a general speed test suggests. YouTube’s streaming tips
- Run an upload speed test on the same connection and, if possible, at the same time of day as the event.
- Reserve at least 20% of measured available upload capacity; account for other devices, other streams, and any backup stream using the connection.
- If the connection fluctuates, reduce the target bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Judge the result under conditions similar to the event, not only during an otherwise idle network test.
Balance resolution, frame rate, and latency
Resolution affects image detail; frame rate affects how smoothly motion appears. Both influence bitrate needs. Choose the highest combination your connection can deliver consistently rather than selecting the largest number available and hoping the network holds. YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default; custom stream keys allow manual resolution settings. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and connections. YouTube encoder settings

Latency is the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and the event appearing to viewers. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If real-time audience interaction is not important, the lowest-latency mode may not be worth that trade-off. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable at 2160p/4K. Pick an equipment and streaming approach
Webcam or mobile streaming
A webcam or mobile setup is a simpler route when you mainly need a camera feed and basic production. YouTube identifies webcam streaming as an option; better equipment can improve stream quality. The official guidance does not establish a particular camera or accessory as a tested recommendation. YouTube ways to stream

Encoder software or hardware
Use an encoder when you need to share gameplay or a screen, connect external audio or video hardware, or manage a production with multiple cameras or microphones. YouTube supports encoder software on a computer as well as standalone encoder hardware. These options add setup and testing work but provide more control over the signal you send. The available guidance does not establish a best brand or model. YouTube ways to stream
Set up and test a YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming. If this is the first time you have enabled it on your YouTube channel, allow for activation to take up to 24 hours. YouTube ways to stream
- Choose webcam/mobile or an encoder. Pick the simpler camera route for a straightforward feed, or an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, external gear, or a more involved production. YouTube ways to stream
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio and connect the encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: keep it private and reset it if you think it has been exposed. YouTube stream keys
- Configure the outgoing signal. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format, CBR, and 2-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval at or below 4 seconds and make sure the chosen bitrate fits your upload capacity with headroom. YouTube encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips
- Run a representative test. Include typical motion and audio, inspect the preview in Live Control Room, and check stream health and any error messages before and during the event. YouTube encoder settings
- Prepare early and test failover if applicable. YouTube suggests setting up the stream at least two hours ahead and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the event. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover before the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- Stream health reports connection trouble: Check upload rather than download speed, reduce bitrate or output resolution if needed, and look for competing devices or streams sharing the connection. Keep the recommended 20% headroom.
- Viewers see buffering: A bitrate that exceeds available upload capacity can make the incoming stream unstable. Lower the bitrate or choose a more modest resolution or frame rate, then retest. Lower-latency delivery can also mean more buffering for viewers.
- Encoder settings do not match the expected picture: Confirm the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default unless manual settings are configured through a custom stream key.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream URL and key entered from YouTube Studio. If the key may have been shared or exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- The preview is silent or the audio is wrong: Verify the encoder’s audio input and that it is sending an audio format YouTube lists, such as AAC or MP3. Include audio in the preflight test.
- The stream looks less smooth or detailed than intended: Check that the encoder’s selected frame rate and resolution match the output you intended, and confirm that bitrate is appropriate for that combination. Test with representative action; static screens may not reveal problems that appear during motion.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream 24/7, a computer-based encoder means a computer and reliable home connection must keep running. StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
