Live streaming moves through four distinct stages: a camera, game, or other source produces audio and video; an encoder compresses that material and sends it to a platform; the platform may create alternate versions; and delivery infrastructure sends a suitable version to each viewer. Bitrate is one encoder setting in that chain—not a guarantee of quality. The right choice depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, platform guidance, and how much stable upload capacity you have.

How a live stream gets from your game to a viewer

When you stream a game, your computer or console produces video and audio. An encoder—software such as OBS or a hardware encoder—compresses and packages that source using settings such as codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. It sends the resulting stream to a platform’s ingest endpoint, which receives the creator’s outgoing feed.

The platform may then transcode that feed into multiple renditions, such as versions at different resolutions or bitrates. Viewers receive a rendition through the platform’s delivery system, which can adapt to the viewer’s device and connection. The encoder’s outgoing stream and the viewer-facing renditions are therefore not necessarily the same file or quality level.

  • Encoding: compressing and packaging source audio and video into a stream.
  • Bitrate: the amount of encoded data sent per unit of time. It affects required upload capacity and can affect picture and sound quality.
  • Transcoding: creating alternate versions of the incoming feed—for example, at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates.
  • Delivery: sending an appropriate output version to viewers over the platform’s distribution infrastructure.

These are connected stages, but they are not synonyms. A bitrate setting controls one property of the encoded feed; it does not directly set every viewer’s delivered quality.

What bitrate should you use for live streaming?

Start with the platform’s recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check whether your upload connection can sustain the outgoing stream reliably. The following are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings on its guidance page accessed October 3, 2026; they are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal requirements.

Output AV1 or H.265 H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps

The codec matters: YouTube’s recommendations differ between AV1 or H.265 and H.264. So do resolution and frame rate. A fast-moving game can make compression artifacts more noticeable, but increasing bitrate also increases the data your connection must upload continuously. A connection that briefly reaches a high speed but fluctuates or becomes congested may be less suitable than a lower, stable upload capacity.

Leave capacity for other traffic and for the normal variation of your connection rather than treating a speed-test peak as guaranteed streaming capacity. If stream health shows dropped frames or instability, reduce the bitrate or output demands and test again. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health.

Which encoder settings matter besides bitrate?

Resolution and frame rate

Resolution determines the dimensions of the outgoing image; frame rate determines how many frames are sent each second. Higher values increase the amount of material the encoder must represent and can require more bitrate or more efficient compression. Choose settings that your source, encoder, connection, and platform can sustain together. YouTube’s bitrate guidance is tied to codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than to one bitrate for every stream.

Codec

A codec determines how video or audio is compressed. Different codecs can represent material with different efficiency, but the platform and ingest protocol must support the codec you select. YouTube’s current guidance, for example, lists different recommended bitrates for AV1 or H.265 and H.264 at the same output resolution and frame rate.

Rate control and keyframes

YouTube’s listed RTMP and RTMPS settings use constant bitrate (CBR). Its current encoder guidance recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. A keyframe is a reference frame from which later frames can be decoded; the interval can affect how the stream is encoded and processed. Confirm that your encoder is applying the intended settings rather than assuming a preset has done so.

Audio

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Check that the encoder’s selected channel layout matches your actual audio source; selecting a multichannel setting does not create additional source channels.

What is RTMP, and what does RTMPS add?

RTMP is a protocol used to send a live feed from an encoder to an ingest service. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP: it encrypts the connection in transit. YouTube recommends RTMPS for streaming to YouTube Live, and its protocol comparison lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as third-party ingest options.

HLS and DASH can support additional codecs used in some high-resolution workflows. Their segment-based operation typically adds latency compared with RTMP, so protocol choice involves trade-offs rather than a single best answer for every stream.

Consideration What to check
Upload demand Can your connection sustain the outgoing bitrate without competing traffic causing instability?
Codec support Does the chosen ingest path accept the codec, and does its compression efficiency fit your quality and bandwidth goals?
Resolution and frame rate Can the source, encoder, connection, and platform handle the selected output together?
Latency target Is a lower-delay workflow more important than the capabilities of a segment-based protocol?
Security in transit Does the connection use encryption, such as RTMPS?
Platform behavior Which protocols and codecs does the platform accept, and what viewer renditions does it create?

How adaptive bitrate streaming helps viewers

Transcoding can turn one incoming source feed into several feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. A viewer on a fast connection may be able to watch a higher-bitrate rendition, while a viewer on a slower connection may need a lower-bitrate one. This is the basis for offering versions that can better fit different devices and network conditions.

The platform determines whether it creates those alternatives and whether viewers can select among them or have playback adapt automatically. YouTube says it automatically creates multiple output formats. That does not mean every platform offers the same set of selectable variants or behaves identically when a viewer’s connection changes.

Why does a live stream buffer?

Buffering happens when playback cannot keep receiving or decoding the next part of the stream quickly enough. The cause can be on the creator’s side, in platform processing, or on the viewer’s device or network. A single symptom does not identify which stage is at fault.

  • Creator-side upload instability: if the encoder cannot deliver data steadily, the platform may receive an inconsistent feed. Check encoder stream health and the upload connection; lower bitrate or output demands and test again.
  • Viewer connection limits: if the viewer’s available bandwidth is below the rendition being played, playback may stall. A lower available rendition can help when the platform provides one.
  • Processing and delivery latency: the ingest protocol and platform workflow affect how content is processed and delivered. Segment-based HLS or DASH workflows typically add latency compared with RTMP; latency and buffering are related considerations, but they are not the same symptom.
  • Device or playback constraints: if a device or player struggles with the selected output, test on another supported device or connection to narrow down where the problem occurs.

When diagnosing a problem, compare what the encoder reports with what the viewer experiences. If the outgoing feed is healthy but only some viewers buffer, investigate those viewers’ connection and playback conditions before changing the creator’s encoder settings.

How a cloud delivery workflow can differ

A live platform is not the only possible delivery architecture. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview, last updated September 30, 2026, describes one example: accepting SRT or RTMP input, transcoding it to HLS or DASH, saving the output to Cloud Storage, and serving it through Media CDN. This is one cloud implementation, not a universal design or a required setup for ordinary YouTube streaming.

For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel

A conventional encoder sends a live source such as gameplay, a camera, or a screen capture. A different need arises when the goal is to keep prerecorded videos playing as a YouTube live stream around the clock. StreamNeo is a cloud service for that specific YouTube use case: it plays uploaded videos or a playlist, rather than going live from a camera. Its cloud service can keep the stream running without a home computer left on.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. The same product is included on every plan; billing options include a day, a week, a month, 6 months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
