The original Logitech G9 remains worth considering only for its distinctive compact shape, interchangeable grips, configurable weight system and excellent dual-mode scroll wheel. It was innovative in 2007, but its approximately 156 g empty-tray weight, aging laser sensor, old cable and uncertain modern software support make it a shape-specific used-market purchase—not a sensible general gaming mouse in 2026.

What the Logitech G9 is

Logitech launched the wired G9 Laser Mouse in August 2007. Its design prioritized physical and software customization rather than the low weight now associated with competitive gaming. The mouse uses an invisible laser sensor, a wired USB connection, two interchangeable shells, onboard profiles, adjustable weights, customizable LEDs and a MicroGear wheel that switches between ratcheted and free-spinning scrolling.

This is the original G9, not the later G9x revision. The G9 advertises 200–3,200 DPI; listings that claim a higher ceiling may be describing a G9x or may simply be inaccurate. See the G9/G9x repair and identification reference.

The interchangeable grips are the G9’s reason to exist

Precision Grip

The narrower Precision Grip makes the mouse feel shorter and more compact. It gives fingertip and claw users a firmer hold with less palm contact, and can suit smaller or medium-sized hands that dislike a tall ergonomic hump.

Comfort or Wide Load Grip

The broader shell gives more palm support and feels more relaxed for desktop work, strategy games and slower-paced play. It can be preferable for users who want contact across the rear of the hand.

The shells change the contact surface and perceived shape, but they do not create two completely different mice. The underlying sensor, buttons, cable, weight cartridge and basic layout remain the same. Period reviews disagreed about which shell was best, so treat the choice as personal fit rather than an objective upgrade. See impressions from Tom’s Hardware, Hardware Secrets and TechSpot.

Redragon M612 Wired RGB Optical Gaming Mouse 8000 DPI Remapping Keys

  • Any Button is Reassignable - 11 programmable buttons are all editable with customizable tactical keybinds in whatever game or work you are engaging. 1 rapid fire + 2 side macro buttons offer you a better gaming and working experience.
  • Comfort Grip with Details - The skin-friendly frosted coating is the main comfort grip of the mouse surface, which offers you the most enjoyable fingerprint-free tactility. The left side equipped with rubber texture strengthened the friction and made the mouse easier to control.
  • 5 Decent Backlit Modes - Turn the backlit on and make some kills in your gaming battlefield. The hyped dynamic RGB backlit vibe will never let you down when decorating your gaming space, it would be better with other Redragon accessories with lights on.
  • Fatigue Killer with Ergonomic Design - Solid frame with a streamlined and general claw-grip design offers a satisfying and comfortable gaming experience with less fatigue even though after hours of use.

Shape and ergonomics

The G9 is unusually compact and low compared with many current ergonomic mice. It is most likely to suit small-to-medium hands, fingertip or claw grips, and people who prefer a short mouse they can reposition with their fingers. Large hands, relaxed palm grips and anyone wanting substantial palm support may find either shell cramped. The two side buttons are also modest by current MMO and productivity standards.

Weight: useful tuning or its biggest flaw?

The cartridge accepts four 7 g weights and four 4 g weights, for up to 28 g of additional mass. Logitech specified the mouse at approximately 156 g with an empty tray, so even the lightest configuration is heavy by modern competitive standards.

  • A heavier setup can feel planted for desktop work, strategy games and deliberate aiming.
  • Distributed weights let you tune resistance and balance rather than merely adding mass.
  • Changing the load is not instant: remove the grip and cartridge first.
  • Adding all weights makes rapid arm movement even more tiring.

Older reviews reasonably treated adjustable weight as a feature. In 2026, the G9’s mass is also one of its clearest disadvantages.

  • With Logitech G HUB software, customize sensitivity settings on this PC gaming mouse to suit your playstyle and quickly cycle between up to 5 DPI settings using the middle DPI cycle button
  • Mechanical primary buttons are tensioned with durable metal springs for reliable performance and feel, with crisp clicks and precise feedback

Sensor and gaming performance

The laser sensor offers 200–3,200 DPI, with five selectable settings and software-configurable reporting up to 1,000 reports per second. In its era, those figures were premium. A working unit can still handle office work, older games, strategy titles and casual shooters, but its maximum DPI is not a modern buying reason.

DPI maximum, in-game sensitivity, desktop pointer speed and actual control quality are separate things. One contemporary test found 3,200 DPI frustrating in practice, while other reviews praised tracking and responsiveness for the period; Gaming Nexus and TechSpot illustrate that distinction. Current optical mice generally offer lower mass, more advanced motion control, better feet and current firmware. Do not assume a healthy G9 is unusable, but do not treat it as equivalent to a current high-end esports mouse.

Buttons and controls

  • Left and right click, wheel click and wheel tilt.
  • Forward and back side buttons.
  • DPI up and down buttons behind the wheel.
  • Profile selection control on the underside.
  • Underside switch for ratcheted or free-spin wheel mode.

The DPI buttons are unusually close to the wheel and can be hit accidentally. The underside wheel switch avoids accidental activation during play but is inconvenient to reach. Reviewers also differed on the feel of wheel click and tilt. The layout is useful if you regularly change DPI or scroll mode, but distracting if you want an uncluttered area behind the wheel. The MicroGear wheel remains a standout

Ratcheted mode provides controlled, click-to-click scrolling. Free-spin mode nearly removes friction, making long documents and web pages quick to traverse. That behavior is still distinctive, although the underside switch is less convenient than a top-mounted control.

On a used unit, check for an inconsistent encoder, failed wheel clicks, a loose or noisy free-spin mechanism and dirt around the wheel. These are inspection points for old hardware, not guaranteed defects in every G9.

Profiles, memory and macros

Logitech documented up to five hardware profiles and up to 30 software profiles. Profiles could contain button assignments, DPI settings, LED colors and macros, which made the G9 practical to move between computers in its original period.

The original setup depended on SetPoint 5.0A or SetPoint 5.0A x64. Onboard memory may preserve configured settings after setup, but software-dependent behavior is not guaranteed to transfer. Do not assume current Logitech G HUB can configure an original G9. Logitech’s current G gaming-mouse catalog focuses on newer products.

Software and modern compatibility

  1. Confirm that the device is the original G9 rather than a G9x.
  2. Check Logitech’s current support archive for the exact model and operating system.
  3. Configure onboard settings on a compatible system before relying on another computer.
  4. Save a simple profile, then test every button and DPI setting after reconnecting.
  5. Keep a basic operating configuration in case software assignments do not transfer.

Basic USB operation and full SetPoint configuration are different questions. Modern Windows support should be treated as uncertain until tested with the exact mouse, driver and operating system. Avoid unofficial driver mirrors unless you have independently assessed their security.

Cable, feet and build quality on a used G9

The braided cable and PTFE feet were strong period features, but age now matters more than the original specification sheet. Inspect the following before buying:

  • Fraying, stiffness, kinks or intermittent disconnects in the cable.
  • Uneven, worn or missing feet.
  • Cracks around the shell-release mechanism.
  • Sticky or degraded rubberized grip surfaces.
  • Double-clicking switches, failed side buttons or a loose wheel.
  • Missing shell, cartridge or individual weights.

A sealed “new old stock” unit is not automatically safer: rubber, cable insulation, switches and encoders can age in storage. A return policy is more valuable than a seller’s claim that a mouse is mint.

G9 versus G9x

Model What is established Buying implication
G9 Original model; 200–3,200 DPI specification The subject of this review
G9x Later related revision with a higher advertised DPI range Not identical; do not apply G9x specifications to a G9

Used listings often blur the names. Ask for photographs of the model label, underside, cable, shells and accessories before paying a premium.

Who should buy one?

Buy or keep a G9 if

  • You specifically love its compact shape, grip shells or MicroGear wheel.
  • You are replacing a familiar G9 or collecting older hardware.
  • The unit is complete, tested, inexpensive and returnable.
  • You can live with a heavy wired mouse and uncertain software support.

Avoid it if

  • You want a lightweight competitive FPS mouse or wireless operation.
  • You need modern driver and firmware support.
  • You require more than two side buttons.
  • You have large hands or use a relaxed palm grip.
  • The listing lacks clear photos or prices the mouse like a modern premium model.

Modern alternatives by need

Need Alternative What changes from the G9
Affordable modern Logitech option G305 LIGHTSPEED Wireless and current, but no interchangeable shells, weight cartridge or G9 wheel; published Logitech pricing has been approximately $59.99–$69.99, not a guaranteed 2026 retail price.
Lower-cost modern performance G305 X SUPERLIGHT Modern lightweight/wireless-oriented design; Logitech announced a $79.99 price signal in 2026, not a universal live price.
Premium competitive gaming PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 Much lighter and wireless, with no shell or weight customization; Logitech announced a $159 suggested retail price in 2023.
Buttons and adjustable mass Logitech G502 family More buttons and a familiar Logitech ecosystem, but larger and more palm-oriented rather than G9-compact.
Modern lightweight alternative outside Logitech Razer Viper family Current wired and wireless choices aimed at low mass and competitive performance, not interchangeable ergonomics.

Final recommendation

For collectors and former G9 owners, a complete, clean and tested example can still be satisfying. For casual users, buy only at a low used price with a return option. For competitive players, choose a current lightweight optical mouse instead. The G9’s original 3,200-DPI number is far less important than shell fit, weight, wheel condition, cable health and whether its old software works on your computer.
