logscrpt.dll Missing: Trace the IIS Component and Fix Windows

Length11 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

“The program can’t start because logscrpt.dll is missing”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You may also see “logscrpt.dll was not found,” “Error loading logscrpt.dll,” or “logscrpt.dll could not be loaded.” logscrpt.dll is a genuine Microsoft IIS component, but it is not a general-purpose Windows runtime file that every PC is expected to have.

The file is Microsoft’s IIS Log Scripting DLL. It implements the legacy ILogScripting COM interface, which allows scripts or components to read IIS log files. Microsoft identifies it as deprecated, with IIS 6.0 being the last IIS version supporting this component. See Microsoft’s IIS Logging Overview.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that best matches what happened:

  • An old web application, server-management utility, or ASP tool produces the error: Repair or reinstall that application, then repair the IIS features it requires.
  • You removed IIS or changed Windows Features: Re-enable Internet Information Services and its required compatibility or legacy scripting features.
  • The error began after a Windows upgrade, system restore, disk cleanup, or an interrupted update: Repair the Windows component store with DISM and SFC.
  • Your antivirus quarantined the file: Do not restore it automatically. Verify its signature and expected path first, then reinstall IIS if there is any doubt.
  • The file exists but will not load: Check for a missing dependency, wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, and an incorrect file location.
  • The file is in a profile, temporary folder, download directory, or unrelated application folder: Treat it as unverified until its publisher, signature, and load context are established.
  • The error comes from a modern program that does not use IIS: Repair that program instead. Installing unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages is usually not the answer.

What logscrpt.dll is and where it belongs

The documented IIS location is:

%SystemRoot%System32inetsrvlogscrpt.dll

On a typical Windows installation, this expands to a path under the Windows directory, usually on the system drive. The inetsrv folder matters. logscrpt.dll belongs to Internet Information Services, so it is not normally placed directly in System32 like a general Windows API DLL.

Do not copy a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder. Windows uses System32 for native system components on 64-bit installations, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Those names are counterintuitive, and putting the wrong build in either directory can create a second problem.

Modern IIS logging does not generally require this old COM component. If a program specifically asks for logscrpt.dll, it may be a legacy IIS application or management utility. Installing IIS on Windows 10 or Windows 11 also does not guarantee that this deprecated IIS 6 component will be provided in the exact form expected by an obsolete program.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error

Start here when only one program produces the message.

For a traditional desktop application

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If there is no Repair option:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.

If repair does not restore the program, uninstall it, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the original installer or the application vendor’s official installer. Do not assume that every application should load the copy from the IIS directory. Some legacy programs have their own installation and compatibility requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an IIS-hosted application

Repair the application first if it was recently removed, upgraded, or restored from an old server image. Then check IIS features as described below. A missing logscrpt.dll message can be the visible symptom of an incomplete application installation rather than damage to Windows itself.

Fix 2: Re-enable IIS and its legacy features

This is the most likely fix when the error appears in an old IIS-dependent program or after IIS was removed.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 client editions

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
optionalfeatures

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Expand Internet Information Services.
  3. Enable the IIS features required by the affected application.
  4. Expand Web Management Tools and enable the management features the application needs.
  5. Look for IIS 6 Management Compatibility.
  6. Look for legacy scripting or compatibility features under the IIS sections. The names vary by Windows edition and installed feature set.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Allow Windows to install the components.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Try the affected application again.

Microsoft documents IIS installation through Windows Features in its IIS Modules Overview. Do not enable every feature automatically on a production computer. Select the features required by the application or deployment instructions.

Windows may report that it could not complete the requested changes. If that happens, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the feature installation. If the feature still will not install, continue with DISM and SFC.

Windows Server

On Windows Server, use the role installation interface:

Rank #2
  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Select Add Roles and Features.
  4. Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
  5. Select the target server.
  6. Select Web Server (IIS).
  7. Review Role Services.
  8. Enable IIS logging, the required management compatibility features, and any legacy scripting feature required by the application.
  9. Select Install.
  10. Restart if Server Manager requests it.

For administrators who need the broad IIS role installation command, Microsoft documents Install-WindowsFeature in its PowerShell reference:

Install-WindowsFeature -Name Web-Server -IncludeAllSubFeature -IncludeManagementTools

This installs a broad feature set. Review the selected role services rather than using the broad command blindly on a production server.

On older Windows Server versions, the legacy scripting feature may be identified as Web-Lgcy-Scripting. Feature names depend on the server version, so confirm the available name in Server Manager before attempting a command-based installation.

Check whether IIS is installed

After restarting:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:

text
inetmgr

  1. Press Enter.

If IIS Manager opens, the management tools are installed. This does not prove that every legacy IIS compatibility feature is present, so check the selected role services as well.

Then inspect the expected directory:

%SystemRoot%System32inetsrv

If logscrpt.dll is absent after enabling IIS, do not download a replacement. The installed Windows version may not ship that deprecated component, or the application may require an older IIS environment that cannot be recreated safely by copying one file.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use this step when Windows Features fail to install, the file disappeared after an update, or several Windows components are behaving incorrectly.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. In the same elevated window, run:

cmd
sfc /scannow

  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Try installing IIS again or launch the affected application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store. Microsoft’s Repair a Windows Image guidance covers this sequence.

If SFC says it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart and test again. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat SFC. If the problem remains, use System Restore or an in-place repair based on the Windows installation currently installed. Do not replace system files individually from an archive.

Repeating SFC without checking what changed can turn a simple repair into guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected IIS application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the failure.

Fix 4: Check quarantine and security software

If the error appeared immediately after an antivirus detection, inspect the security product’s protection history.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Find the event involving logscrpt.dll.
  5. Do not choose Restore until you have checked the file’s location and signature.
  6. If the file was in the expected IIS directory and was Microsoft-signed, follow your security product’s documented restore process.
  7. If the location was a temporary folder, user profile, download folder, or unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined.
  8. Run a full scan.
  9. Repair or reinstall IIS instead of manually copying the quarantined file.

A Microsoft file name alone does not prove that a file is genuine. Malware can use familiar names, and an incorrectly located file may be an impersonation.

Fix 5: Check the path, signature, and architecture

Use these checks before attempting registration or restoring a quarantined file.

Check the file location

In File Explorer, browse to:

%SystemRoot%System32inetsrv

Right-click logscrpt.dll, select Properties, and review the General and Details tabs. The description should identify Microsoft IIS Log Scripting DLL, and the publisher should be Microsoft Corporation.

A copy elsewhere is not automatically malicious. An application may carry a private copy, but you should verify its origin through that application’s official installer and documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the digital signature

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Digital Signatures.
  4. Select the signature.
  5. Select Details.
  6. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

If the Digital Signatures tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the file has been modified, do not register or copy it. Reinstall the owning IIS feature or application.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application can require different component locations and loading behavior. Do not place an x86 file into a 64-bit location or use a reported version table from an unofficial archive as proof that the file matches your system.

Confirm the affected program’s architecture through its documentation or installer. If the program is an old 32-bit application, verify that its IIS compatibility requirements support the Windows edition you are using. If the program is 64-bit, use the native IIS components installed by Windows.

The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of logscrpt.dll is missing. In that case, the DLL may visibly exist while Windows still cannot load it. Reinstalling the owning IIS feature is safer than trying random runtime packages.

Fix 6: Use regsvr32 only for a confirmed IIS registration issue

regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point, and it will fail when the file does not support that function or when the wrong version of regsvr32 is used. Microsoft explains its behavior in the regsvr32 command reference.

Rank #4

Historical IIS setup procedures registered this COM component as part of IIS installation. That does not mean you should manually register an arbitrary file downloaded from elsewhere.

Use registration only when:

  • The file is from the official Windows/IIS installation,
  • Its Microsoft signature is valid,
  • The application or Microsoft-supported procedure specifically requires registration, and
  • You know whether the caller is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If an administrator has confirmed that registration is appropriate, use the matching system tool from an elevated Command Prompt rather than guessing. First repair or reinstall IIS, because the installer should normally place the component and its registration data correctly.

If registration returns an error, stop there. Do not repeatedly try different DLL copies or both System32 and SysWOW64.

Fix 7: Update Windows and investigate drivers only when symptoms point there

A display, storage, or chipset driver does not normally provide logscrpt.dll. Driver replacement is not a primary fix for this IIS error. Consider it only when the DLL message appeared alongside system instability, failed updates, device errors, or a migration to different hardware.

To check drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category connected with the broader problem.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Note the provider and driver details.
  8. Select Update Driver.
  9. Choose Search automatically for drivers, or use the device manufacturer’s official driver package.
  10. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not remove a working driver merely because logscrpt.dll is missing. Windows Update and IIS repair remain the relevant paths for this file.

Manually hunting through dozens of driver packages is easy to get wrong when a system has several stale devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing IIS or reinstalling the application that requested logscrpt.dll.

Why DLL download sites are the wrong repair

Downloading a file with the right name does not establish that it is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • From Microsoft,
  • The correct Windows or IIS build,
  • The correct architecture,
  • Compatible with your dependencies,
  • Properly registered, or
  • Free from tampering.

A random copy can leave the original problem untouched if the missing item is an IIS feature or a dependency. It can also cause version conflicts and introduce malware. The safe sources are Windows Features, Server Manager, Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, and the original application’s official installer.

If the error persists

Collect the context before making another change:

  1. Write down the exact error message.
  2. Record which program displays it.
  3. Note whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Check whether IIS was recently removed, upgraded, restored, or quarantined.
  5. Check the Windows Event Viewer for an application or side-by-side error at the same time.
  6. Confirm whether the expected IIS directory exists.
  7. Confirm whether the file is Microsoft-signed.
  8. Repair the program or IIS feature that owns the failure.

If the application requires the deprecated IIS 6 logging COM object, it may need an older supported server environment or an update from its vendor. A current Windows installation cannot always provide an obsolete component merely because a legacy program expects its name.

FAQ

Is logscrpt.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. Microsoft documents it as an IIS logging scripting component. Its expected location is under System32inetsrv, not an arbitrary folder.

Is it required for normal IIS logging today?

Usually not. The component is deprecated, and IIS 6.0 was the last IIS version supporting it. A program that specifically requires it may be obsolete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Usually no. logscrpt.dll belongs to IIS, not those general runtime packages. Install them only when the affected application independently documents that requirement.

Can I copy it from another computer?

Do not do that. Windows and IIS versions, dependencies, architecture, and registration data can differ. Repair IIS or reinstall the original application instead.

Should I put it in System32 and SysWOW64?

No. Do not copy the file into either directory manually. Let Windows and IIS install the component in the correct location.

Is every copy outside inetsrv malware?

No. A legacy application may have its own copy. Verify its Microsoft signature, origin, and load context before trusting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?

The message may refer to a missing dependency or architecture mismatch. Repair IIS, verify the caller’s bitness, and avoid replacing the visible DLL blindly.

Will installing IIS on Windows 10 or Windows 11 always restore this file?

No. This is a deprecated component, and modern Windows editions may not provide the exact legacy file required by an old application. The application may need an update or a compatible older server environment.

Do I need regsvr32?

Only when a confirmed IIS registration procedure requires it and the file is a verified Microsoft installation. It is not a generic missing-DLL repair command.
