What is Longclaw, and who gave it to Jon Snow?
Longclaw is a sword in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO’s Game of Thrones. It belonged to House Mormont before Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, gave it to Jon Snow. Martin’s official product announcement recounts the sword’s history and identifies the first Valyrian Steel blade Jalic would offer as Jon Snow’s Longclaw: “Nothing Holds an Edge Like Valyrian Steel”.
Are the book and screen replicas the same?
No. Martin’s 2008 announcement described a limited book replica and explicitly distinguished the screen replica from that edition. Treat them as separate products rather than assuming that a listing’s dimensions or materials apply to every Longclaw replica.
The announced book replica
Martin’s 2008 announcement described a 39-inch hand-and-a-half sword with a wolf-head pommel, display plaque, and certificate. The announced run was 2,500 pieces. Screen-associated listings
Retail listings describe other interpretations. The Royal Armouries Museum Shop listed a replica with a blunted stainless-steel blade, 114 cm overall length, and display plaque; the listing was marked sold out when crawled in 2026. Strongblade listed a different version with a 35-inch blade and 45-inch overall length. These are seller-provided product specifications, not independent measurements, and they should not be combined with the 2008 book edition’s details. What should you check before buying a Longclaw sword replica?
Product names alone do not establish which version a seller is offering. Compare the listing against the specific details that matter to you:

- Construction and size: Check the stated blade material, whether the blade is blunted, and both blade and overall length.
- Included display items: Confirm whether a plaque or certificate is included rather than assuming they come with every version.
- Stock and delivery: Check the current listing for availability and whether it ships to your destination. The Royal Armouries page reported temporary unavailability of U.S. shipping dated 2025-08-22; that dated notice does not establish its current shipping status.
- Age and safety rules: Read the seller’s age-verification requirements and the rules that apply where you live. The Royal Armouries listing specified age verification; requirements can differ by product and destination.
Marketplace listings can use similar names without establishing that they are the same edition or that their claims match another seller’s product. Confirm the edition, seller, specifications, restrictions, and current stock on the particular listing before ordering.
