Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is worth playing if you enjoy patient, hands-on puzzle solving: noticing details, keeping track of clues and working out how seemingly separate pieces fit together. Its surreal hotel setting and changing puzzle formats make discovery absorbing, but its open-ended progression can also leave you wandering when you have missed a small detail. This is a puzzle-first mystery, not a reflex test.

What kind of game is Lorelei and the Laser Eyes?

Developed by Simogo and published by Annapurna Interactive, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is a nonlinear puzzle mystery set in a strange old European hotel or manor. The player character has been summoned to a project there; an international auteur, an aristocratic artist and a vagabond illusionist are among the figures tied to the unfolding mystery. The game gradually turns that setup into a surreal web of illusions and unanswered questions.

The setting is more than a backdrop. The hotel is a place to inspect and navigate, while documents, objects and visual details carry clues. Simogo describes the experience as deliberately slower and contemplative, with complexity coming from puzzles rather than dexterity. Its stated design aim was for players to understand the idea behind a puzzle, rather than simply copy a solution.

How the puzzles work—and who will enjoy them

The central activity is observing, recording and reasoning. A symbol or date found in one place may matter somewhere else; maps, written material and environmental patterns invite you to connect information over time. The structure is open-ended, and Simogo says puzzle elements can be randomized as progression gradually opens more of the world. That means attention and clue management matter as much as any individual “aha” moment.

Simogo designed the core around one button and directional inputs, with optional minigames, stories and collectibles adding texture. The developer’s stated principle was that complexity should “completely revolve around” the puzzles, “and never around dexterity.” The game does include sequences with their own game-like feel, but its main challenge is figuring things out, not executing fast or precise moves.

Keeping notes can make the experience easier to manage. PC Gamer’s reviewer describes using a notebook for shapes, symbols, notes, maps, a maze and lists, and says it likely saved an hour or two of copying information. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a requirement or a measured benefit for every player. A basic notebook is an optional aid; there is no need for a branded or official one.

Atmosphere and variety

The presentation shifts between three-dimensional spaces with black-and-white photographic textures and red or pink accents, text-heavy documents, and sequences that recall 1-bit adventure games or PlayStation 1-era survival horror. Review coverage also describes puzzle boxes, safes, art installations, mazes and embedded game-like sequences. Those changes help the game feel less like a succession of identical riddles and more like a place whose logic keeps revealing new layers.

That variety is a strength if you like a mystery that asks you to look closely and sit with a problem. It can be a drawback if you prefer a clearly signposted route from one objective to the next. The game’s open structure sometimes makes it hard to tell whether you should keep exploring, rethink a clue or return to a detail you overlooked. PC Gamer’s reviewer says missing a page turn or movable object could lead to hours of wandering, while persistence eventually brought satisfying mechanical and narrative discoveries.

What reviewers say

Individual critics have rated the game highly, though these scores are assessments from particular outlets, not a universal verdict. GameSpot’s Kurt Indovina titled the review “A Mastery of Illusions” and scored it 9/10. PC Gamer scored it 89/100 and praised the challenge and rewards of solving its puzzles. That review also questions whether the ending’s narrative payoff matters as much as the journey of solving the game’s mysteries.

Platforms and release dates

Simogo’s release timeline lists the original Nintendo Switch and Steam/PC release on May 16, 2024, followed by PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on December 3, 2024. The developer says those PlayStation versions use controller audio and haptics for selected interactions. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition followed on April 23, 2026, with support for 120fps and 4K resolution.

Nintendo’s US store listing describes a digital Switch/Switch 2 edition, with TV, tabletop and handheld modes, one player and ten supported languages. PlayStation’s store lists PS4 and PS5 versions. Regional pricing and availability can change, so check the relevant store for current details. The cited listings establish digital purchase options; they do not confirm physical retail stock.

Should you play it?

Choose Lorelei and the Laser Eyes if you like exploring unfamiliar spaces, maintaining your own clues and earning progress through deductions. It is a particularly good fit for players who enjoy the process of solving a puzzle even when the next step is not immediately obvious. Its atmosphere, varied presentation and interconnected challenges give patient players plenty to investigate.

Consider another puzzle adventure if you need frequent objective markers, dislike taking notes, or find it frustrating to retrace your steps after missing a small environmental clue. The experience puts more weight on the puzzle-solving journey than on a neatly explained narrative payoff, so readers seeking a straightforward, story-led resolution may be less satisfied. The best fit depends on whether uncertainty feels intriguing or merely obstructive to you.
