Lossless Scaling can make demanding games look much smoother on an MSI Claw, but it does not double the handheld’s real rendering power. Its upscaling can raise rendered FPS by reducing the game’s internal resolution, while frame generation creates additional displayed frames. The result can be excellent in slower-paced single-player games, provided the MSI Claw already maintains a reasonably stable base frame rate.

Generated FPS is not equivalent to rendered FPS: a game rendering at 35 FPS may display approximately 70 FPS with X2 frame generation, but controls will still feel closer to a 35-FPS game and may incur additional processing latency.

What Lossless Scaling actually boosts

Lossless Scaling combines two separate technologies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Upscaling: The game renders fewer pixels, then Lossless Scaling enlarges the image to the MSI Claw’s display resolution. This can produce a genuine increase in rendered FPS when the GPU is the limitation.
  • Frame generation: Lossless Scaling creates intermediate frames between rendered frames. This raises the displayed FPS and improves perceived smoothness, but it does not make the game process input as quickly as the generated frame rate suggests.

For example, if a game renders at 35 FPS and LSFG generates one additional frame for every rendered frame, the display may show about 70 FPS. The game is still producing only 35 original frames, however. Frame pacing and input latency remain important.

Are the reported MSI Claw FPS gains real?

The original September 18, 2024 coverage reported an ETA Prime demonstration in which Cyberpunk 2077 rose from 58 FPS to more than 80 FPS, Red Dead Redemption 2 rose from 62 FPS to more than 80 FPS, and Forza Horizon 5 reached the mid-90s. Elden Ring also showed improved performance, although a consistently locked 60 FPS was not guaranteed.

Game Reported result Important qualification
Cyberpunk 2077 58 FPS to above 80 FPS Demonstration figure; test conditions were not fully documented.
Red Dead Redemption 2 62 FPS to above 80 FPS Not an independently repeatable MSI Claw benchmark.
Forza Horizon 5 Mid-90s FPS Reported displayed result, not a universal guarantee.
Elden Ring Improved performance Do not assume a locked 60 FPS.

These numbers should be treated as reported demonstration results, not promises for every MSI Claw model. Results vary with the processor generation, BIOS, graphics driver, power profile, game API, internal resolution, display refresh rate, graphics settings, and whether the game is CPU- or GPU-limited.

The figures also do not establish whether the quoted FPS was rendered, generated, or displayed. That is why the practical question is not simply “what number appears on the counter?” but whether the game feels smoother without unacceptable artifacts or latency.

What is current in Lossless Scaling?

The older coverage referred to LSFG 2.3 and LSFG 1.1. Current official materials highlight LSFG 3, LSFG 3.1, and Adaptive Frame Generation. Lossless Scaling also offers fixed frame multipliers and an adaptive mode designed to target a specified frame rate.

  • X2: The best starting point for MSI Claw testing. It adds one generated frame per rendered frame.
  • Adaptive Frame Generation: Targets a chosen output rate rather than applying only a fixed multiplier.
  • Performance Mode: Useful when frame-generation overhead is too high for a lower-power integrated GPU.
  • Scaling algorithms: LS1, AMD FSR, NVIDIA Image Scaling, Integer Scaling, xBR, Anime4K, Nearest Neighbor and other specialist options.

For modern 3D games, begin with LS1 or AMD FSR. Integer Scaling and xBR are more appropriate for pixel-art games and some older content. The official Lossless Scaling site documents the current feature set.

How to set up Lossless Scaling on an MSI Claw

Prerequisites

  • Windows 10 version 2004 or newer.
  • A 64-bit system with a modern integrated or discrete GPU.
  • A game that supports windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
  • Enough unused GPU capacity to run the scaler and, if enabled, frame generation.

Exclusive fullscreen is generally not supported in the normal configuration. Borderless windowed mode is the safest choice.

Recommended first setup

  1. Install Lossless Scaling from Steam.
  2. Launch the game in borderless windowed mode.
  3. Set a lower internal resolution, such as 720p or 800p on a higher-resolution panel.
  4. Disable the game’s own upscaler initially so you can evaluate Lossless Scaling separately. Re-enable it later if it looks better.
  5. Open Lossless Scaling and choose LS1 or FSR.
  6. Test scaling alone in a demanding gameplay scene.
  7. If the base FPS is stable, enable LSFG 3 or 3.1 and start with X2.
  8. Try Performance Mode if frame generation lowers the game’s original FPS.
  9. Set the output to the MSI Claw’s display resolution and apply the profile while the game is running.
  10. Compare native rendering, scaling only, frame generation only, and scaling plus frame generation.

Test in actual gameplay rather than a menu or quiet opening area. Lossless Scaling supports per-game profiles, allowing settings to be applied automatically when a game executable is detected.

How much base FPS do you need?

  • Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
  • Below 20–25 rendered FPS: Usually too low. Generated frames may be unstable and controls remain sluggish.
  • About 30 rendered FPS: Can work for slower single-player games if frame pacing is consistent.
  • 35–45 rendered FPS: Often the most useful range for handheld frame generation.
  • 50–60 rendered FPS: Usually produces a smoother and more responsive result, assuming the display can show it.

A stable 30 FPS can be a better input for frame generation than an unstable 40–60 FPS. Watch consistency and frame pacing, not only the peak counter.

Best settings by game type

Game type Scaling Frame generation Practical target
Single-player RPG LS1 or FSR X2 Stable 30–45 rendered FPS
Racing game LS1 or FSR X2 Stable 40+ rendered FPS
Strategy game LS1 or FSR Optional 30+ rendered FPS
Competitive shooter Scaling only Usually off Highest stable rendered FPS
Emulator or older game Integer Scaling or xBR Optional Stable frame-rate cap

Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Forza Horizon 5, Elden Ring and Skyrim are reasonable games to experiment with, but each requires its own settings. Titles with severe camera movement, transparent effects, foliage or dense HUD elements may reveal more artifacts.

When to use scaling, frame generation, both—or neither

Use scaling only when

  • The game is GPU-limited and you want genuinely higher rendered FPS.
  • You are playing competitively or need responsive controls.
  • Frame-generation artifacts are distracting.
  • The game already has stable frame pacing.

Use frame generation when

  • The base FPS is stable.
  • The game is primarily single-player.
  • Smoother camera movement matters more than minimum input latency.
  • The display has sufficient refresh rate for the intended output.

Use both when

  • Lowering internal resolution creates a stable base frame rate.
  • The upscaled image remains acceptable.
  • The game is GPU-limited rather than CPU-limited.

Avoid it when

  • Base FPS is unstable or extremely low.
  • The game is CPU-limited.
  • The output exceeds the display’s useful refresh rate.
  • The game already has a better integrated upscaler or frame-generation implementation.

Common problems and fixes

The game gets slower after enabling Lossless Scaling

The MSI Claw may not have enough spare GPU capacity. The scaler, frame generation, a second display, recording software or overlays can consume resources needed by the game.

  1. Disable frame generation.
  2. Use scaling only.
  3. Switch to Performance Mode.
  4. Return to X2 if a higher multiplier was enabled.
  5. Lower graphics settings and close browsers, overlays and recording tools.
  6. Use the game’s native upscaler or native resolution if the base FPS remains unstable.

Lossless Scaling does not activate

Confirm that the game is running in windowed or borderless mode, the correct window is selected, Lossless Scaling is running, and the output resolution is supported. Exclusive fullscreen, overlays and anti-cheat systems can interfere.

The image has ghosting or flicker

Frame generation can distort thin geometry, foliage, particles, hair, transparent effects and user-interface elements. Try X2, increase the base FPS, test LS1 or FSR separately, or disable frame generation in difficult scenes. Compare moving gameplay rather than a single still screenshot.

  • Revolutionary Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology redirects airflow to internal cooling components.

Controls feel delayed

Frame generation does not provide the responsiveness of the generated output rate. An image displayed at 80 or 90 FPS may still feel closer to the game’s 40–45 rendered FPS, with additional processing overhead. Competitive shooters, fighting games and rhythm games are usually better candidates for scaling only.

Is it safe for online games?

Lossless Scaling is not an injection-based game mod, but anti-cheat compatibility is not guaranteed. Steam notes that community experience cannot guarantee compatibility with every online game. Use it at your discretion and check the specific game’s rules before relying on it in multiplayer.

Is Lossless Scaling worth buying for an MSI Claw?

It is worth considering if the Claw already holds a stable base frame rate, your games support borderless windowed mode, and you value smoother motion in single-player titles. Start with scaling only, then test LSFG X2. Do not buy it expecting a replacement for stronger hardware, a fix for CPU bottlenecks, or universally latency-free FPS.

Battery-life improvements are possible if a lower-power configuration is sufficient, but the available source material does not provide battery measurements. Treat that as a potential benefit rather than a verified result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native game upscalers and frame-generation systems should also be tested first when available. They can have better access to motion data and may handle HUD elements more cleanly.

Bottom line: Lossless Scaling can deliver a major perceived smoothness boost on MSI Claw, and scaling can provide a real rendered-FPS improvement when the GPU is the bottleneck. The “nearly doubled FPS” claim should be understood as a possible displayed-FPS result, not a doubling of the Claw’s rendering power. For most owners, the safest path is LS1 or FSR scaling first, followed by LSFG X2 only when the base frame rate is stable.
