As of Oct. 3, 2026: Seth Trimble was reported ineligible to play for Louisville in 2026–27 after the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved a temporary injunction in Wells v. NCAA on Oct. 2. The ruling ended the temporary protection that had allowed Trimble and other plaintiffs to compete while the case proceeded; it was not reported as a final decision resolving the broader eligibility dispute. The Courier Journal and WDRB reported the change.
Can Seth Trimble play for Louisville in 2026–27?
Following the Oct. 2, 2026 ruling, Trimble was reported among 38 plaintiffs who were again ineligible for the 2026–27 season. This describes his status after the appellate court dissolved the temporary injunction; it should not be read as a final merits ruling on NCAA eligibility rules or the entire lawsuit. The Courier Journal and WDRB reported that the case remained ongoing.
What changed in the court case?
Trimble’s ability to play had depended on temporary relief in the Kentucky case, not a final resolution of his eligibility. The sequence was:
- Aug. 21: Louisville announced Trimble’s addition as a fifth-year player for its 2026–27 roster. Louisville Athletics
- Sept. 2: Jefferson County Circuit Court allowed Trimble and other athletes to be added to Wells v. NCAA, extending temporary eligibility protection to them. WDRB
- Sept. 4: The Kentucky Court of Appeals denied an emergency request to stay the temporary order. Reports at the time said Trimble could play while the lawsuit continued. That interim status was superseded by the Oct. 2 decision. WDRB
- Oct. 2: A three-judge Kentucky Court of Appeals panel dissolved the temporary injunction. News reports said all 38 plaintiffs, including Trimble, were again ineligible for the season. The Courier Journal; WDRB
What the Oct. 2 ruling does—and does not—mean
The appellate action removed the temporary injunction for the plaintiffs in the Kentucky case. It does not, based on the reported ruling, settle the broader dispute over NCAA eligibility rules. Reports described Wells v. NCAA as ongoing, so the current status is tied to the loss of interim protection rather than a final judgment on the merits. The cited coverage concerns the Kentucky state case, not separate federal litigation.

The Courier Journal quoted the judges as explaining: “There was no loss of an opportunity for them because nothing changed, and the new rule did not, as the circuit court surmised, ‘bar’ them from doing anything they previously had a right to do.” The report also quoted the panel: “Permitting the high school Class of 2022 to play a fifth season — the very relief the respondents were requesting in their joint motion for a ‘temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction’ — would disrupt the status quo.” These are the judges’ words as quoted by the newspaper; the appellate opinion itself is not linked here.
Who is Seth Trimble?
Louisville lists Trimble as a 6-foot-3 guard from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, a transfer from North Carolina and a fifth-year player. The Cardinals announced his addition on Aug. 21. Coach Pat Kelsey said at the time, “Seth Trimble is one of the steadying forces in college basketball.” That comment accompanied the roster announcement and predates the Oct. 2 court ruling. Louisville’s roster page lists Trimble’s 2025–26 North Carolina senior-season averages as 14.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game across 24 games. Louisville Athletics roster
