It is not a Windows file, a DirectX component, or part of the Visual C++ Redistributable.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the game or application that reports the error. A LÖVE game normally keeps love.dll beside its executable, along with other LÖVE files. Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32.
What version of love.dll do you need?
The correct file depends on the game’s LÖVE build and architecture. These version details can help identify a mismatch, but they are not universal file specifications for every release.

Builds can differ, and a newer LÖVE package is not automatically compatible with every older game. Use the files shipped with the affected game or the exact LÖVE package required by that application.

Where should love.dll be located?
For a normal LÖVE installation, love.dll belongs in the same folder as love.exe.
For a fused LÖVE game, it belongs beside the game executable. The folder may also contain files such as:
SDL2.dllOpenAL32.dlllua51.dllmpg123.dll- Microsoft runtime DLLs
These files form a matched package. A missing love.dll can indicate an incomplete installation, antivirus quarantine, incorrect packaging, or a mixture of 32-bit, 64-bit, or different-version files.
To identify the owning program:
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the path in Target or select Open File Location.
- Check whether
love.dllis missing from that application folder.
Fix 1: Verify or repair the affected game
This is the best first step for a game installed through Steam, itch.io, GOG, or another launcher.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam should download missing or changed files from the game’s official installation source. If the game still reports love.dll after verification, close Steam, restart Windows, and run verification again. If it continues to fail, uninstall and reinstall the game.
Other launchers
Look for a command named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact wording varies.
If the launcher has no repair feature:
- Close the game and launcher.
- Back up saved games if they are stored inside the game folder.
- Uninstall the game through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Download it again from the publisher or launcher that originally supplied it.
- Install it into a clean folder.
- Start the game without copying DLLs from another installation.
If the repaired game now reports SDL2.dll, OpenAL32.dll, or lua51.dll, the installation is still incomplete or contains mixed files. Reinstall the complete game package rather than replacing each DLL separately.

Fix 2: Reinstall a standalone LÖVE installation
If the error appears when launching love.exe, a .love file, or a LÖVE development project, restore the complete LÖVE package.

- Use the official LÖVE project release page, not a DLL download site.
- Download the matching Windows installer or ZIP package.
- Remove or rename the damaged LÖVE installation folder.
- Install or extract the complete package into a new folder.
- Confirm that
love.exeandlove.dllare together. - Launch the program from that restored folder.
Do not combine love.dll from one release with love.exe or sibling DLLs from another. A game built or packaged with one LÖVE version may fail with an entry-point error when only love.dll is replaced.
A 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit game cannot run on 32-bit Windows. To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
- Match the application’s architecture to the supported Windows architecture.
If you do not know which build the game requires, use the files supplied by that game’s developer rather than guessing from the Windows version.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed love.dll, especially after a game update or cleanup operation.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Check the path and the application that owned the file.
- Confirm that the game came from a trusted official source.
- Restore or allow the file only if you have verified that the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. If the file came from an unofficial repack or unknown download, do not restore it. Remove the application, scan the system, and reinstall the game from its legitimate source.
After restoring a quarantined file, run the launcher’s verification command. That replaces damaged files and confirms that the rest of the LÖVE package is present.

Fix 4: Rebuild the application folder cleanly
If the file exists but Windows says it is invalid, the problem is usually not solved by copying another love.dll.
Possible causes include:
- A 32-bit DLL in a 64-bit application folder
- A 64-bit DLL in a 32-bit application folder
love.dllfrom a different LÖVE release- A damaged or partially extracted archive
- A missing companion DLL
- A game distributed without its required runtime files
Use this clean rebuild:
- Close the program.
- Rename its installation folder, rather than deleting it immediately.
- Reinstall or extract the complete official package.
- Ensure every DLL came from that same package.
- Start the program from the new folder.
- Delete the old folder only after confirming that saves and settings are safe.
If the developer distributed a fused LÖVE game without the required companion DLLs, only a corrected release from that developer can permanently fix the packaging problem.

Installing the latest Visual C++ Redistributable is not a direct repair for a missing love.dll. It may help only if Windows reports a separate missing Microsoft runtime dependency.
If the error names a Microsoft DLL or a Visual C++ runtime:
- Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the architecture required by the application.
- Install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
Do not expect the Redistributable to recreate love.dll. LÖVE’s own runtime files must come from the game or the official LÖVE package.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
Use Windows repair commands only when multiple unrelated applications fail, Windows components are also behaving abnormally, or disk corruption is suspected. These commands do not normally restore a third-party LÖVE DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected game again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports repaired files but love.dll is still missing, that is expected: these tools repair protected Windows components, not the LÖVE application runtime.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and identify repair targets, but its full repair functions are optional; when love.dll belongs to one game, reinstalling that game remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Update drivers only for wider graphics or launch failures
A graphics driver update is not a normal fix for a missing love.dll. Consider it only if several games fail, graphics initialization also produces errors, or the issue began after a driver change.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update driver or obtain the driver from the graphics manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Do not use Windows Features for this issue. Enabling or disabling optional Windows components does not install LÖVE’s application-local runtime.

What not to do
Do not copy love.dll to System32
Do not place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global PATH folder
LÖVE games expect their runtime beside the application executable. Global copying can hide the real installation problem and create version conflicts between games.
Do not run regsvr32 love.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. love.dll is a runtime library, not normally a COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command is therefore not a repair:
regsvr32 love.dll
It may produce a registration error without changing the game installation.

Do not use a random DLL download
Standalone DLL websites can provide the wrong LÖVE release, wrong architecture, incomplete companion files, or a malicious replacement. Even a genuine love.dll may not match the game’s executable.
Use the game publisher’s official installer or the official LÖVE release package instead.

If the error started after an update or cleanup
First check the launcher’s verification feature and Windows Security Protection history. If the problem began immediately after a software installation, driver change, or Windows update, System Restore may help:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system settings and installed programs while preserving personal files. It will not replace a badly packaged game, so reinstall the affected application if the error remains.
FAQ
Is love.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to LÖVE or to a game or application built with LÖVE.
Is love.dll a DirectX or Visual C++ file?
No. It is an application runtime library. Microsoft runtimes may be additional dependencies, but they do not replace LÖVE’s own DLL.
Can I download only love.dll?
Generally no. Restore the complete game or LÖVE package so that the executable and every companion DLL match.
Why does the game still fail after I restored the file?
The file may have the wrong architecture or LÖVE version, or another sibling dependency may be missing. Reinstall the complete matching package.

What if every LÖVE game fails?
Check antivirus quarantine, permissions, disk health, and possible malware. If broader Windows components also fail, run DISM followed by SFC.
What information is useful when asking for help?
Record the exact error text, the game or executable name, its installation folder, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether antivirus recently quarantined a file. Also note whether verification or a complete reinstall changed the error.
