lxaa4_usb1.dll is most likely an older Lexmark printer or scanner driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. If Windows reports that lxaa4_usb1.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the complete Lexmark device package instead of downloading the DLL by itself.
The file is reported as a 32-bit component associated with Lexmark Communication System and older multifunction devices, including the Lexmark X463, X464, X466, and related families. The exact device must be confirmed from your installed printer software because the file can belong to a particular driver package rather than every Lexmark product.
Fix 1: Identify the Lexmark device and reinstall its driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely fix. A missing DLL usually means the driver installation is incomplete, damaged, removed, or no longer matches the printer software still trying to load it.
1. Find the file path
Press Windows key, type lxaa4_usb1.dll, and search your computer.

If File Explorer finds it:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Open file location.
- Note the folder name and nearby files.
- Look for an
.inffile, files beginning withLXAA4, or a file such aswialx009.inf.
Do not move, rename, or delete the file yet. Its folder can reveal which Lexmark package installed it. A location inside a driver package or Windows Driver Store points to a device driver, not a general application installation.
If Windows cannot find it, continue anyway. The file may have been removed by an uninstall, cleanup utility, failed update, or antivirus quarantine.
2. Check installed printers and scanners
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
Look for:
- A Lexmark printer you still use
- An old Lexmark printer that has been replaced
- A scanner entry
- A duplicate or offline Lexmark device
Write down the exact model, including suffixes such as X466dte or X466dtwe. Do not choose a driver merely because it says “Lexmark” or because the model number looks similar.
Also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Lexmark device, an unknown device, or a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and choose Properties.
- Check the General, Driver, and Details tabs.
If the error occurs only when scanning, inspect the scanner or imaging entries first. The missing component may belong to the scan portion of the package rather than the printing portion.
3. Remove the broken device entry
If the printer is still installed but produces the error:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Lexmark printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
If the old device remains in Device Manager, right-click it and choose Uninstall device. If Windows offers to remove the driver package, select that option only when you are certain the package belongs to the obsolete or damaged Lexmark device.

Avoid manually deleting files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Windows Driver Store. Driver packages include installation metadata, dependencies, services, and signing information that a copied DLL cannot replace.

4. Install the correct package
Download the driver from Lexmark’s official Support or Drivers and Downloads area using the exact printer model. If Windows Update offers a suitable driver, you can use that instead.
Run the Lexmark installer and follow its connection instructions. For a USB device:
- Disconnect the USB cable if the installer requests it.
- Start the installer.
- Reconnect the printer only when prompted.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page and test scanning if the device supports it.
If the printer is network-connected, install the network package and select the correct printer address or discovered device. Do not install a USB-only package simply because the printer has a USB port.

The repair succeeded when:
- The Lexmark printer appears without a warning icon.
- The test page prints.
- Scanning starts without the DLL message.
- The old startup error no longer appears.
- The Lexmark software opens normally.
If the same error returns, record the exact file path and error wording before trying the next fix.
Fix 2: Let Windows Update repair the printer driver
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Windows may have an inbox driver or a newer driver supplied through Windows Update.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if available.
- Install a printer or scanner driver that matches the Lexmark device.
- Restart the computer.
Then return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, remove the broken Lexmark entry if it remains, and select Add device.

Microsoft recommends using Windows Update first for printer drivers, followed by the manufacturer’s support site when Windows cannot find a suitable package. Its printer-driver guidance is available through Microsoft Support.

If Windows installs a generic driver but scanning still fails, install the complete Lexmark package. Generic printing support does not always include the manufacturer’s scan software or WIA/TWAIN components.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a driver component if the file was modified, unsigned, damaged, or detected as suspicious.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
lxaa4_usb1.dll, Lexmark software, or the driver installer. - Expand the detection and inspect its path and details.
Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing. Restore it only if the path belongs to a legitimate Lexmark installation, the package came from Lexmark or Windows Update, and the detection is clearly a false positive.
If Defender identifies malware:
- Leave the file quarantined.
- Run a full scan.
- Use Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan if the detection persists.
- Reinstall the Lexmark driver from its official source after the system is clean.
Microsoft notes that a restored file may be detected again. That is a reason to investigate the package, not to keep overriding the detection.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and SFC are useful when several Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the DLL is located in a protected Windows component path. They are not the primary repair for a third-party Lexmark driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source. Microsoft’s official System File Checker instructions explain these commands and their results.

It is optional, and reinstalling the Lexmark package remains the direct fix for a missing third-party driver component.
How to interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them: restart and test the printer.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not repair some: repeat the repair after DISM completes, then investigate the specific path.
- No integrity violations: the Lexmark driver, not Windows system files, is the more likely cause.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Reported records describe lxaa4_usb1.dll as a 32-bit file. That does not automatically make it unusable on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications and drivers through its compatibility layers, but the driver package still has to support the operating system and device.

- Press Windows key, type
System Information, and open it. - Check System Type.
- Note whether Windows is x64-based or x86-based.
- Download the Lexmark package intended for your exact Windows edition and printer model.
- If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties > Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only if Lexmark’s installer requires them.
A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” does not prove that architecture is the cause. Corruption, a missing dependency, a damaged installer, or an incompatible old package can produce similar loader errors.

Time needed: 20–40 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, printer replacement, or software removal and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key, type
Create a restore point, and open it. - Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally removing personal documents. It will not repair a physically failing printer, and it may not restore a vendor package that was never included in the restore point.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
Do not treat every DLL as a self-registering Windows component. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no evidence that lxaa4_usb1.dll is an ActiveX control or self-registering COM server. Running this command is therefore unlikely to restore the Lexmark driver:

regsvr32 lxaa4_usb1.dll
It may produce an entry-point error or make the situation appear more confusing. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.
Why downloading the DLL alone is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- A tampered or malicious file
- The wrong Lexmark package version
- The wrong architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that does not match the installed
.inffile or driver services
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create conflicts and bypass driver signing and installation rules. The safe sources are Windows Update and the official Lexmark Support site for the exact device model.
Common causes of lxaa4_usb1.dll errors

That message can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean one of its dependencies is missing. Reinstalling the complete package repairs both the file and its expected dependencies.
What should I tell technical support?
Provide the Lexmark model, Windows version and build, exact error text, full file path, whether the device connects by USB or network, and whether the failure affects printing, scanning, startup, or a specific application.
