What’s actually slowing this PC down?

lxbbgf.dll errors usually mean that an older application cannot find a private or legacy runtime file it expects. The safest fix is to identify the requesting program and repair or reinstall that program, not download lxbbgf.dll and copy it into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
lxbbgf.dll is a searchable filename associated in third-party file indexes with “MFCDLL Shared Library – Retail Version” and Microsoft Visual C++. Those indexes also associate it with MFC42.DLL, but there is no authoritative Microsoft documentation proving that the two files are identical.
Microsoft documents legacy MFC files such as mfc42.dll and mfc42u.dll, but not lxbbgf.dll as a standard Windows system file. There is no verified Microsoft package that specifically identifies lxbbgf.dll as a normal component of System32 or SysWOW64.
That distinction matters. A program may have:
- Included the file in its own installation directory
- Renamed or privately packaged an older MFC runtime
- Expected the file beside its executable
- Lost the file during an incomplete installation or cleanup
- Loaded the file through another dependency
A current Visual C++ Redistributable package may not provide this particular filename. Microsoft says applications must receive the runtime matching the toolset used to build them. Current v14 redistributables primarily support applications built with Visual Studio 2015 and later, so installing the newest package is not automatically a fix for an older Visual C++ 6.0-era application.

Causes by symptom
| Message or symptom | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because LXBBGF.dll is missing.” | The application installation is incomplete or the file was deleted | Repair or reinstall the named application |
| “This application failed to start because lxbbgf.dll was not found.” | The executable cannot locate a required application-local dependency | Check the application folder and reinstall from the official source |
| “Error loading LXBBGF.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | The named file or one of its dependencies is unavailable | Inspect the application path, then repair the application |
| “Failed to load LXBBGF.dll.” | Missing, damaged, incompatible, or blocked dependency | Check security history and application architecture |
| “The file lxbbgf.dll is missing or corrupted.” | Damaged installation, quarantine, disk issue, or incompatible replacement | Reinstall the application and verify security history |
| An entry-point error appears | The DLL version does not match the program or another runtime | Remove the unofficial replacement and reinstall the application |
| The error began after antivirus action | Security software may have quarantined or removed a file | Review Protection History before restoring anything |
| The error appears at startup for an uninstalled program | An obsolete startup entry or scheduled task remains | Find the executable path and remove the old application cleanly |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting lxbbgf.dll
Do this before repairing Windows. The executable that reports the error determines which runtime and architecture are required.
- Reproduce the error.
- Record the exact message.
- Look for the application name in the title bar or message text.
- If the error appears while opening a shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Check the Target field and note the executable path.
- Open the containing folder and identify the program’s publisher and installation directory.
If the error appears during startup:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click the relevant entry and choose Open file location, if available.
- Note the executable path before disabling or removing the entry.
For a game, open its official launcher and note whether the failure occurs before or after the launcher starts. A launcher may provide a Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command.
If the program is no longer installed, inspect scheduled tasks:
- Press the Windows key and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Select suspicious tasks and inspect the Actions tab.
- Confirm the executable path before deleting an obsolete task.
Do not download the DLL simply because the filename appears in the message. The message may identify a dependency, while the real failure is a missing library that lxbbgf.dll itself needs.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the requesting application
This is the most likely fix when the file belongs to an older application.
Try Windows application repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if present.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Repair normally preserves personal data, but back up saves, templates, profiles, and configuration files first when they matter.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Open the application’s official uninstaller or return to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or launch the installer supplied by the publisher, official store, or original installation media.
- Install the program again.
- Start it from its normal shortcut.
For a game, use the launcher’s file verification feature before reinstalling the whole game. Verification replaces missing or altered program files while preserving the installation where supported.
A successful repair means the application starts without the lxbbgf.dll message. If the same message returns immediately, check whether antivirus software removed the file during installation.

Fix 3: Install the runtime specified by the application
Do not assume that every Visual C++ error is fixed by one universal package.
Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads are appropriate for applications that require the supported Visual Studio runtime families. The application publisher may instead provide an older runtime with its installer or support package.
Match the package architecture
A 32-bit application normally needs the x86 runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime. If the computer runs several applications, installing both official x86 and x64 packages may be appropriate.
To identify the application architecture, check the publisher’s documentation or installer requirements. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted system administration tool, but do not guess based only on the Windows edition.
After installing the vendor-specified or Microsoft package:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- If the error remains, repair the application itself.
- Do not copy a DLL from the redistributable into another program’s folder unless the publisher explicitly documents that deployment method.
Microsoft’s MFC redistribution guidance explains why an application must receive the matching MFC runtime rather than an arbitrary file with a similar name.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Defender or another security product may have removed a file, but an application’s request for a DLL is not proof that the file is safe.

- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with the affected program or installation directory.
- Note the detection name and file path.
Do not choose Allow on device or Restore merely to make the error disappear. First confirm:
- The program came from its genuine publisher or official store
- The file is in the expected application directory
- The installer is digitally signed where applicable
- The publisher confirms the file is required
- A security scan does not identify the file as malicious
The safer response is usually to remove the application, scan the installer, and reinstall it from the publisher. If the file was quarantined because of tampering or malware, restoring it can recreate the security problem.
Run a full scan from Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline when malware may be active before Windows starts. Microsoft explains these options in its Virus and threat protection guidance.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows programs are failing, Windows files appear damaged, or the problem followed an interrupted update. They do not normally recreate a private third-party application DLL.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files and replaces damaged copies when possible. Microsoft documents the process in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair everything, copy the exact result and continue with application repair. Repeating the commands will not supply an undocumented lxbbgf.dll file.
If you prefer not to hunt through Windows logs and repeatedly rerun repair commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the specific application that requested lxbbgf.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, cleanup utility, registry change, update, or other recent software change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Close, then Next.
- Select Finish and confirm.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but you should still back up important data first.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to repairing or reinstalling the requesting application. System Restore is not a replacement for obtaining a valid application installer.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the application depends on them
A graphics or device driver is relevant only when the error is raised by software that actually uses that device, such as a scanner utility, printer control panel, video tool, or hardware management program.
To update a driver through Windows:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the relevant device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean repair, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page or the application publisher’s driver package. Do not replace a working driver merely because lxbbgf.dll is mentioned by an unrelated program.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a COM registration function such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for repairing every missing or damaged DLL.
For example:
regsvr32 lxbbgf.dll
may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result is expected for many ordinary runtime libraries. Registering a normal MFC dependency does not install its missing dependencies or make the application load it.
Use regsvr32 only when the software publisher explicitly instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the matching architecture. Microsoft documents the command and its syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.

Why copying the file into System32 is unsafe
Do not copy an arbitrary lxbbgf.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s directory
A replacement may have the wrong architecture, an incompatible export set, or malicious code. It can also cause one application to load a version intended for another program. “The specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency of the DLL, so copying the named file may not solve the error at all.
Application-local deployment can be valid when the publisher supplies the exact file for the exact program and documents where it belongs. That is different from downloading a similarly named DLL from an unknown archive.
Optional Windows features
Windows Features are not a normal solution for lxbbgf.dll.
You may need an optional feature only when the affected application specifically requires it. For example:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select More Windows features.
- Enable only the feature identified by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable random legacy features in the hope that one will provide this filename. An optional feature will not normally repair a missing private application DLL.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before contacting the application publisher:
- Exact error text
- Application name and executable filename
- Full executable path
- Windows version and build
- Application version
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the issue began after an update, reinstall, migration, cleanup, or antivirus detection
- Protection History results
- Output from DISM and SFC
- Whether reinstalling from the original source changed the error
If the error appears at every boot, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an obsolete executable. Remove the old program through its legitimate uninstaller instead of restoring a DLL for software that is no longer installed.
FAQ
Is lxbbgf.dll a Windows system file?
It is not documented by Microsoft as a normal Windows system component. Third-party metadata associates it with an old Microsoft Visual C++ or MFC-style runtime, but its exact provenance is not authoritatively established.
Recommended Free Tools
Is lxbbgf.dll the same as MFC42.DLL?
That is an unverified alias claim found in third-party file metadata. Do not assume the files are byte-for-byte identical or substitute one for the other.
Will the latest Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?
Only if the application requires a compatible runtime supplied by that package. Current packages may not contain this legacy filename. Follow the application publisher’s runtime instructions and repair the application first.
Should I download lxbbgf.dll from a DLL website?
No. An arbitrary download can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Use the application’s original installer, its official support package, or an official Microsoft redistributable identified for that program.
Do I need the x86 or x64 runtime?
A 32-bit application generally needs x86 dependencies, even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs x64 dependencies. When several applications are involved, both official architectures may be required.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?
The missing item may be a dependency loaded by lxbbgf.dll, not the named file itself. Repairing the application restores the complete dependency chain more reliably than copying one DLL.
What if reinstalling the application does not help?
Check Protection History, confirm that the installer matches the application architecture, run DISM and SFC if broader corruption is suspected, and contact the publisher with the executable path and full error text. No verified Microsoft package specifically named lxbbgf.dll has been established, so the requesting application remains the key to the correct repair.
