A Mac mini M4 and a VPS can both be used to host an OBS-based YouTube livestream, but neither is automatically reliable just because it can run the software. A Mac mini gives you a local macOS setup and hardware you control; a VPS moves the encoder to a remote server, where performance and cost depend on the specific plan. Choose based on the stream you need to produce, the limits you can verify, and how you will recover when something fails.
At a glance: which setup fits?
| Factor | Mac mini M4 | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Where OBS runs | On a physical Mac in your home or studio. | On a remote server; operating system and software support depend on the provider and plan. |
| Upfront and recurring costs | Hardware purchase plus local electricity and internet costs. | Recurring hosting fees. No provider-specific price is established here, so compare actual plans. |
| What can interrupt the stream | Local internet or power failure, Mac or OBS failure, or a misconfigured stream. | Server or provider network failure, plan limits, encoding overload, or a misconfigured stream. |
| Best fit to investigate | A workflow that already uses a local macOS desktop, especially when it includes local capture or production equipment. | A software-generated stream that can be operated remotely, if the plan has sufficient sustained encoding capacity and outbound bandwidth. |
| Key unknown | Whether your particular OBS scene can encode reliably around the clock. | Whether the selected server can sustain your workload within its bandwidth and usage limits. |
These are operational trade-offs, not a benchmark verdict: no independent 24/7 OBS test of the Mac mini M4 or provider-specific VPS performance and pricing is established here.
What the Mac mini M4 specifications do—and do not—tell you
Apple lists the 2024 Mac mini M4 configuration with 16 GB unified memory and a 256 GB SSD at 4 W idle and 65 W maximum power consumption, with thermal output of 14 BTU/h idle and 222 BTU/h maximum. Those are Apple’s figures for that configuration, not measured consumption while OBS encodes a particular scene or a prediction of its round-the-clock power use. See Apple’s power and thermal output information and Apple’s Mac mini specifications.
OBS lists Apple Silicon support on macOS 11 or later, but compatibility is not proof that a workload will perform adequately. OBS warns: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect the load. Check the OBS Studio system requirements, then test the scenes and settings you actually intend to use.

What to verify before renting a VPS
“VPS” does not specify a consistent amount of encoding power or network capacity. Before committing to a plan, confirm the particulars with the provider and make sure they fit the stream you intend to run.
- Sustained encoding capacity: Confirm that the plan can handle your chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene continuously—not just run OBS or another encoder briefly.
- Outbound bandwidth: Check the upload capacity, monthly transfer allowance, and any fair-use or throttling limits. Estimate your stream’s bitrate and account for the headroom YouTube recommends.
- Operating system and software: Verify which operating systems are available and whether the streaming software and encoder you plan to use are supported.
- Remote administration: Establish how you will access the machine, see the stream preview, restart the encoder, and troubleshoot it if you lose a session.
- Recovery and provider support: Find out what happens after a server reboot, network disruption, or host failure, and whether the plan includes a recovery process or support commitment you can rely on.
- Total cost: Compare recurring fees and plan limits against the Mac’s purchase cost plus local electricity and internet. No specific VPS price or Mac-versus-VPS cost calculation is established here.
Configure the YouTube stream before choosing a host
The host should be selected for a defined streaming workload, not the other way around. Decide the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate first; then determine whether the local Mac or VPS can sustain the required encoding and network load.

Set the encoder and bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guide recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and RTMP or RTMPS settings. For H.264, its recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. The appropriate bitrate changes with the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; use YouTube’s current encoder settings guide for the configuration you choose. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted stream transport.
Set the keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance rather than assuming a default is correct.

Check upload capacity and headroom
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the stream bitrate by 20%. For example, a 14 Mbps stream needs at least 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity to provide that headroom. This is a recommended margin, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable; YouTube notes that disruptions can break a stream. Its troubleshooting guide covers stream health, testing, and monitoring.
Use your own stream key carefully
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and use its stream key in your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, or support messages. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before going live. Exact screen labels can change, so follow the current YouTube Studio prompts for the selected stream.

Test the whole workflow, not just whether it starts
- Build a representative scene or playlist. Include the audio, motion, sources, and transitions that will be present in the real stream. A static test does not establish that a more demanding production will work.
- Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the encoder connects, the preview appears, audio is present, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health.
- Watch resource use and stream health over time. Look for encoder overload, dropped frames, connection instability, and audio/video problems while the intended workload is running.
- Test recovery deliberately. Work out how to restart OBS or the encoder and reconnect after a network interruption or host reboot. If you use a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
- Only then schedule the 24/7 run. Keep a way to monitor the stream and respond to failures; a successful short test is evidence for that test, not proof of indefinite uptime.
YouTube’s guidance for encoder-based streams covers use cases such as screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and more advanced production. YouTube also transcodes a live stream into viewer output formats, but that does not fix a weak or unstable ingest connection. Its continuous prerecorded-video guidance describes an adjacent use case; it does not establish that every 24/7 stream should use a particular hosting method.
Choose based on the production and the failure you can handle
A Mac mini is a reasonable candidate when
- You want a local macOS desktop workflow and can keep the machine, internet connection, and power available.
- Your production depends on local capture hardware or a setup that is simpler to operate on-site.
- You can test the actual OBS scenes and encoding settings and arrange a way to notice and recover from failures.
A VPS is a reasonable candidate when
- The stream can be generated and managed remotely without relying on locally attached capture equipment.
- You have verified that the specific plan supports the required sustained encoding workload and outbound data use.
- You are comfortable administering a remote system and have a workable monitoring and recovery procedure.
Neither option is categorically cheaper, faster, or more reliable on the available evidence. Compare the exact hardware and hosting plan, your local electricity and internet resilience, the VPS’s real limits, and the time and capability needed to restore a failed stream.
