In April 2026, developer Bryan Keller demonstrated Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah booting natively on Nintendo Wii hardware with his wiiMac bootloader. It is an experimental homebrew port—not a practical replacement for a Mac—with support limited to SD storage, USB keyboards and mice, and non-accelerated video output.
What the Wii Mac OS X port does
The wiiMac project is a bootloader for running PowerPC versions of Mac OS X on Nintendo Wii hardware. Keller’s demonstration targets Mac OS X 10.0, codenamed Cheetah, the operating system’s first release. The port adapts the early startup process and adds Wii-specific code so the system can get from the console’s firmware to a running Mac OS X environment.
This is a native boot on the Wii, rather than a video of a Mac running in an emulator. But “boots” does not mean the Wii has become a fully supported desktop: the available hardware support is deliberately limited.
How wiiMac starts Mac OS X
The boot process bridges the Wii’s PowerPC hardware and the assumptions made by early Mac OS X startup code:
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
- Open Firmware provides the device tree and loads BootX, the Mac OS X boot component.
- BootX loads the Mach-O XNU kernel.
- XNU initializes the processor and virtual memory, then brings up IOKit, BSD, and user-space executables.
That sequence required more than loading an existing Mac OS X image. The Wii’s memory layout differs from what period XNU code expects, including its BAT configuration and the address map for MEM1 and MEM2. Keller patched the kernel and added Wii-specific handling for hardware detection, device-tree construction, storage, drawing, and hardware communication.
What works—and what remains limited
The project author’s stated hardware support covers SD storage, USB mice and keyboards, and video output without graphics acceleration. Input required a Wii USB driver path. Video needed a framebuffer driver and a conversion bridge because the Wii’s video hardware and Mac OS X graphics code represent color differently; early output was reportedly magenta before that issue was addressed.

Non-accelerated graphics are a substantial constraint. The available reports do not provide a frame-rate benchmark, memory-use figure, or success-rate statistic, so there is no published basis for quantifying performance or predicting how reliably the setup will work across individual consoles.
What you need to try it
- A compatible Wii: It must be software-modded and capable of running BootMii. The Wii Mini is not supported.
- An SD card: The project specifies a card of at least 4 GB.
- The wiiMac Cheetah image: The project names the flashable image
wiiMac_cheetah.img. - USB input devices: The port supports USB mice and keyboards; compatibility with a particular device is not guaranteed by the stated support list.
How to install Mac OS X Cheetah on a Wii
- Confirm that your Wii can run BootMii. Do not use a Wii Mini; it is unsupported.
- Back up anything you need from the SD card. Flashing
wiiMac_cheetah.imgreplaces the card’s contents. - Use an SD card with at least 4 GB of capacity and flash the image to it, following the project author’s instructions.
- Insert the prepared card into the compatible Wii and use USB keyboard and mouse for the supported input path.
The available project details establish the image name, minimum card capacity, and requirement for a BootMii-capable Wii, but do not establish a particular flashing application or a more detailed on-console procedure. Check the project’s current instructions before attempting an installation.

Why this homebrew port matters
Getting Cheetah through firmware, boot code, kernel initialization, input, and video on a console built for games is an unusual systems-programming achievement. Keller described the appeal as taking on something that initially seemed uncertain, saying that “the projects that seem just out of reach are exactly the ones worth pursuing.” The result is most interesting as a proof of concept and a retro-computing experiment, rather than as a way to use a Wii as an everyday computer.
