What is the MAINGEAR ML-16?
The ML-16 is a customizable 16-inch gaming and creator laptop built around Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H, with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 available in the reviewed configuration. MAINGEAR lists a 16-inch, 2560 × 1600 QHD+ IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, X-Rite Pantone color calibration, and a 240Hz refresh rate. The company also specifies Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a chassis tested to MIL-STD 810H standards. MAINGEAR’s product page gives the full configuration options.
It is best understood as a portable gaming laptop that can also handle creator workloads, rather than a workstation substitute or a battery-first school laptop. Its RTX 4070, high-refresh display, and upgradeable components make it versatile, but the trade-offs become clear under heavy use.
How much does the ML-16 cost?
In 2024, Tom’s Guide and Laptop Mag reported a starting price of $1,799 and a $2,199 price for the configuration they reviewed. That reviewed machine paired the Core Ultra 7 155H with an RTX 4070, 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. Laptop Mag noted that selecting up to 64GB of memory and 4TB of storage raised the price. How well does the ML-16 perform in games?
The RTX 4070 ML-16 delivers solid gaming performance at FHD and QHD, though it is not among the most powerful gaming laptops in its class. Results vary with game, settings, and upscaling, so review benchmarks should be treated as results from specific test configurations—not promises for every ML-16 SKU.
Tom’s Guide game tests
In Tom’s Guide’s 2024 tests, the laptop averaged 109 FPS in Fortnite across three matches at mostly high settings with DLSS Balanced, and 59 FPS in Return to Moria at full resolution and high settings with DLSS Balanced. At 1600p, the publication recorded 68 FPS in Assassin’s Creed Mirage, 57 FPS in Borderlands 3, 14 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, and 63 FPS in Far Cry 6. Those results illustrate how demanding games can behave very differently, even on the same system.

Laptop Mag synthetic benchmarks and experience
Laptop Mag reported scores of 6,306 in 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra and 6,508 in Port Royal. Its reviewer described gaming as smooth and consistent at FHD or QHD, while positioning the machine as a balance of performance and price rather than a top-end frame-rate champion. For a direct comparison with another 16-inch laptop, consider GPU power limits and that model’s own game tests as well as its GPU name.
Is the display good for gaming and creative work?
The 2560 × 1600 panel combines a sharp 16:10 workspace with a 240Hz refresh rate, which suits fast games and gives editing timelines extra vertical room. Tom’s Guide measured 363 nits of brightness, 103.4% sRGB coverage, 73.2% DCI-P3 coverage, and a Delta-E of 0.2 in its comparison table; its discussion reports Delta-E 0.26. These are measurements from that review unit and test, not a guarantee that every panel will measure identically.

That measured color accuracy and sRGB coverage make the screen a credible option for sRGB-oriented editing. MAINGEAR also supports NVIDIA Studio drivers, and the machine’s portability and upgradeable memory and storage suit video editing, 3D work, and livestreaming. However, Tom’s Guide cautioned that film and television color reproduction is weaker and blacks are not especially deep. With 73.2% DCI-P3 coverage in its test, the ML-16 is not the safe default for color-critical work that depends on broad DCI-P3 coverage; validate the panel against the needs of your workflow.
Battery life, heat, and everyday portability
Battery endurance is the clearest weakness. Laptop Mag measured 4 hours and 1 minute in its 2024 battery test and called the result disappointing. That is a review test result, not a prediction for every workload: gaming and creator tasks can drain a laptop quickly, so plan to use the ML-16 near an outlet for sustained heavy work.

Laptop Mag also raised concerns about thermal management and reported that the keyboard gets warm while gaming. Tom’s Guide noted gameplay stutter in some situations. These reports matter most if you expect extended gaming sessions or uninterrupted performance under load; neither review establishes that every game or session will show the same behavior.
MAINGEAR lists the laptop at 4.29 pounds and 0.78 inches thick. Reported review-unit weights ranged from about 4.1 to 4.59 pounds, so the precise figure depends on the configuration or measurement. That is portable for a 16-inch system with gaming hardware, but the battery result limits its usefulness as an all-day unplugged machine.

Ports, memory, and storage upgrades
The ML-16’s connectivity is broad for a portable gaming system. Its listed connections include two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, Ethernet, microSD, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The microSD slot is small, a limitation Tom’s Guide specifically called out.
MAINGEAR says the system supports up to 64GB of memory and two M.2 NVMe SSDs of up to 4TB each. Dual-channel memory and dual M.2 slots give buyers room to expand RAM and storage rather than replacing the whole laptop to gain capacity. Check the exact configuration and current upgrade options when ordering; capacity support does not mean every ML-16 ships with maximum memory or storage.
Who should buy the MAINGEAR ML-16?
- Consider it if you want one reasonably portable laptop for gaming plus editing, 3D work, or streaming; value a high-refresh QHD+ screen; and want configurable RAM and SSD capacity.
- Look elsewhere if long battery life, cooler sustained operation, or maximum frame rates matter more than portability and configurability.
- Check the specific configuration before purchase: the RTX 4070 benchmarks above apply to tested review configurations, and upgrades change the final price.
When comparing alternatives, look beyond the GPU label. Compare GPU wattage and game performance, screen brightness and gamut, battery runtime, sustained thermals and keyboard temperature, weight and ports, upgrade access, chassis quality, warranty and support, and the price of the configuration you would actually buy.
