Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can make an Atari 2600 label by choosing a design style, sizing the main and end labels to the print method you plan to use, then printing on compatible adhesive stock or sending the files to a label service. The key is not to assume every vintage cartridge used the same artwork or that every printer uses the same bleed dimensions.
Choose a label style before designing
For a new homebrew label, a familiar picture-label layout is a useful starting point: a large image on a black background, an uppercase game title in a contrasting color, plus an Atari logo and CX model number. LabelMaker2600 can generate this kind of design from an image and title. That template is a design option, not a universal pattern for original Atari cartridges.
If you are restoring a vintage game, first identify the label generation and variant you are trying to match. Atari 2600 labels changed over time: historical examples include black and silver backgrounds, different title treatments and image sizes, and a later red picture-label style. Use references for the specific game and shell rather than applying a modern generated style to every cartridge. AtariAge’s label archive documents examples of those variations.
What size should an Atari 2600 cartridge label be?
There is no single universal production specification in the sources for every printer or label product. For its custom-cartridge service, AtariAge specifies a main label cut size of 2.75 × 3.375 inches and an end label cut size of 2.75 × 0.5625 inches. Its submitted files include 0.125-inch bleed on each edge:

| Label | Cut size | File size including bleed |
|---|---|---|
| Main label | 2.75 × 3.375 inches | 3 × 3.625 inches |
| End label | 2.75 × 0.5625 inches | 3 × 0.8125 inches |
These are AtariAge service specifications, not guaranteed dimensions for every blank sheet or print provider. Its service asks for files at 300 or 600 dpi, or 360 dpi when using its label maker. Keep titles, logos, and other important details inside the cut line so trimming does not remove them. If a solid background runs to an edge, AtariAge says its label maker can add bleed for that background. See its custom-cartridge label instructions and follow the current template for the service you select.
A separate AtariAge design contest page from 2004 gives a 2.75 × 3.375-inch printed main-label size, recommends at least 200 dpi, and calls for 0.25-inch bleed when artwork reaches the edge. That is a historical contest specification, distinct from the custom-cartridge service’s instructions. Do not average the two bleed values: use the template provided by your chosen printer. AtariAge’s 2004 contest rules describe that older specification.

Choose how to make and print the labels
Generate artwork and print it yourself
Use a generator such as LabelMaker2600 to lay out a picture label, then size the exported art to a physical template before printing. The generator’s page does not establish universal dimensions or compatibility with a particular paper or printer, so print a test on ordinary paper first and check its fit on the cartridge shell.
Use Atari-sized blank label stock
8-Bit Classics’ blank label sheets are made for Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800 cartridges. The seller describes each sheet as having four top and end labels, sticky backs, and rounded corners; it offers inkjet and laser material selections and links downloadable instructions and Photoshop templates. Follow the instructions and template for the material you choose, since the accessible product details do not state label measurements.

Order a complete custom cartridge
AtariAge’s custom-cartridge service accepts separate main and end label files as part of a cartridge order. This route is for people making a complete cartridge, not a requirement for replacing a label. The service says it will not make homebrew games or hacks without permission from the original author.

Before committing to a method, check whether the stock is adhesive, whether it works with your printer type, whether it includes both top and end labels, and whether a usable template is supplied. A home workflow can mean more control over the design but also requires accurate sizing and trimming; a service can handle printing, though its available shapes and finishes may be limited. Current stock, prices, and terms can change, so confirm those details with the seller or printer.

For a home print, verify scale with a paper test against the cartridge before using label stock. Check that the end label is included if you need one, and inspect the final placement before sticking it down. A 2021 maker-video description mentions self-adhesive inkjet photo paper in one person’s workflow, but that anecdote does not establish it as the best, archival-safe, or universally compatible choice. The video description is an example, not a material standard.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse artwork you created, licensed, or have permission to reproduce. AtariAge’s 2004 contest rules state: “If you use any copyrighted images, you must seek permission from the copyright holder before using that image as part of your label.” That is a contest rule, not a complete analysis of the legal rules for private label-making, so do not treat it as one.
