What happened at the ATM?
The man found the bags on top of a Bank of America ATM in Lewisville. Information on the bags appeared to connect them to a nearby Chick-fil-A, so he asked the restaurant whether the money belonged to it. A manager told him it did not. He then called 911 and handed the bags to police.
Officers counted $128,514 and reportedly matched that amount to a bank receipt inside the bag. A smaller bag held 19 checks. The main account does not give the ATM’s street address.
Who did the money belong to?
Police determined that the cash belonged to Bank of America and had been left behind by workers servicing the ATM. Brink’s was handling the cash. These details were reported by Dexerto on Oct. 2, 2026; no statement from Lewisville police, Bank of America or Brink’s was located in the available coverage.

Lewisville Police Detective Gina Miller described the bag as “just sitting there” and said, “It looked like it was just left there by accident.” Lewisville Police Chief Brook Rollins called finding that amount “certainly rare” and said that finding it unconnected to criminal activity was “certainly unusual.” Those are officials’ descriptions of this incident, not quantified statistics about ATM losses. Dexerto reproduced Miller’s remarks and linked them to NBC DFW; the quotations were not checked against a primary transcript.
When was the money found?
- Aug. 3, 2026: The barber found the bags on the ATM, asked at the nearby restaurant about them, then contacted police.
- After the handoff: Officers counted the cash, matched it to a receipt in the bag and determined it belonged to Bank of America after ATM servicing.

Coverage attributes the ownership and servicing explanation to police, but does not establish whether the finder received a reward or formal recognition, or whether there was any legal outcome. No broader statistic about lost cash during ATM servicing or the return of found money was identified in the coverage.

MyNorthwest host Gee Scott framed the situation as a hypothetical: “You walk up to an ATM. Nobody’s around. Sitting on top is a bag containing $128,514 in cash. What’s your next move?” That was an editorial prompt, not the result of a survey.
