Margit the Fell Omen is Elden Ring’s first major Stormveil gatekeeper. You fight him at Castleward Tunnel in Limgrave, outside Stormveil Castle. The safest plan is to learn his delayed staff timing, dodge rather than drain your stamina behind a shield, and punish his overhead swings and ground stabs. Slash and bleed are useful, holy damage is resisted, and Rogier, Spirit Ashes and Margit’s Shackle can make the encounter considerably more manageable.
Where to find Margit
The main Margit encounter is at the end of Castleward Tunnel on the approach to Stormveil Castle in Limgrave. Game8 lists level 25 as a recommended level, but your upgrade level, build and familiarity with delayed attacks matter more than a strict character-level threshold.
A separate encounter uses Margit’s appearance as a disguise in the Capital Outskirts. It is a later fight with different statistics and a different reward.

These are in-game reference values for the listed encounters, not independently tested measurements. Rogier’s gold summon sign is available for the Limgrave battle, and Spirit Ashes can also be used.

What makes Margit difficult
Delayed staff swings
Margit often holds a staff attack longer than your reflexes expect. Rolling as soon as he begins the animation causes an early roll and leaves you vulnerable when the strike finally lands. Watch the weapon and the committed release, then dodge through or around the attack.
Fast daggers and gap closers
He can create a glowing dagger for quick swipes at close range or throw daggers when you back away. Long lunges let him close distance rapidly, so retreating in a straight line is not a reliable way to reset the fight.
Phase two weapons
At roughly half health, Margit expands his arsenal with additional golden weapons, increasing the number of delayed and overlapping attacks you must read. Margit’s Shackle no longer works once phase two begins.

Reliable openings and punish windows
Overhead attacks
His overhead strikes have a clear commitment and recovery. Dodge late, stay close enough to reach him, and take one or two attacks rather than emptying your stamina bar.
Ground stabs
Ground stabs also provide consistent opportunities. Move around the attack or roll through its active hit, then punish during the recovery animation.
Jump attacks and stance damage
Jump attacks are useful for avoiding low pressure while applying stance damage. Breaking his stance creates a critical-hit opportunity. If you use parries, two successful parries are required before a critical hit becomes available.

A practical plan for beating Margit
- Enter with a stamina reserve. Keep enough stamina to dodge after every attack. Do not treat blocking as your default response.
- Learn the held wind-up. Wait for the staff or golden weapon to commit instead of rolling on the first movement.
- Stay near his recovery. After an overhead strike or ground stab, land one or two attacks and immediately prepare for the next sequence.
- Respect the daggers. If you create distance, expect a thrown dagger or a lunge rather than a safe pause.
- Change your rhythm in phase two. The expanded weapon set gives you fewer automatic punish windows; prioritize survival and only attack after clearly committed moves.
- Use stance pressure deliberately. Jump attacks and charged or otherwise heavy hits can help produce a stance break, but never trade damage by exhausting your stamina.
Should you use a shield?
A shield can absorb a mistake, but repeated guarding is risky. The detailed encounter reference describes a special punishment when a guarding player runs out of stamina. Use a shield selectively for a known hit, then release guard and recover stamina; dodge-focused play is generally safer for learning the fight.

The percentages above are the reference page’s damage modifiers; they are not a claim that every weapon applies damage in the same way. Status effects still require successful applications, and a slow or unsafe setup can be worse than ordinary physical damage.

Rogier’s gold summon sign appears near the arena. He can draw Margit’s attention long enough for a ranged character to cast or for a melee character to heal and reposition.

Spirit Ashes
Spirit Ashes can divide Margit’s pressure and create attack windows. Treat the distraction as temporary: keep watching Margit’s position so a lunge or dagger throw does not catch you while targeting the summon.

Patches sells Margit’s Shackle in Murkwater Cave for 5,000 runes. It is reusable and can bind Margit twice during phase one, holding him for about five seconds each time. It does not bind him in phase two.

The item description calls it “A fetish bathed in golden magic” and says the shackles were made to confine a particular Omen. In practical terms, use the two binds to create safe damage or healing windows early in the fight; do not save them expecting them to work after the phase transition.

Who Margit really is
Margit is an alias used by Morgott, the Omen King. Morgott is a demigod of the Golden Lineage and an Omen who was rejected by the society he protects. He uses the Margit identity while hunting champions and defending the Erdtree and Leyndell.
Omens are described as accursed beings born without the Erdtree’s grace. Royal Omens were traditionally confined underground, which explains the conflict between Morgott’s birth, his devotion to the Erdtree and his place within the Golden Order.
Margit’s introduction captures his hostility toward the Tarnished: “Foul Tarnished, In search of the Elden Ring. Emboldened by the flame of ambition. Someone must extinguish thy flame. Let it be Margit the Fell!” His cloak likewise describes a figure who slaughtered countless champions during the Shattering and became a horror to those seeking the Erdtree or lordship.
