In May 2024, NetEase apologized after a creator agreement for the Marvel Rivals closed alpha was reported to restrict negative opinions about the game, including “subjective negative reviews.” The company said it would revise the terms and encouraged honest feedback. The reports establish that plan, but not the final contract wording or when any revision took effect.
What did the Marvel Rivals creator agreement say?
The agreement was for creators invited to take part in the game’s closed-alpha test. As reported by Ars Technica and PCGamesN, its non-disparagement language barred public statements or discussions deemed detrimental to the game’s reputation. Listed examples included disparaging or satirical remarks about game-related material, belittling the gameplay or its differences from competitors, malicious comparisons, and “subjective negative reviews of the game.”
Streamer Brandon Larned, known as A Seagull, helped bring the clause to wider attention on May 12, 2024. He described it in a social post reproduced by Ars as: “The contract signs away your right to negatively review the game.”
Did Marvel Rivals ban streamers from giving negative reviews?
The reported agreement restricted negative commentary by creators invited to the closed alpha. That is narrower than saying Marvel Rivals banned all streamers or reviewers from criticizing the game: the coverage concerns this creator agreement, not a rule for all players or a verified restriction on post-launch reviews.

It also went beyond a conventional embargo, which controls when covered information can be published, or a spoiler rule, which limits what content can be shown. Ars and PC Gamer distinguish those kinds of limits from a provision that restricted negative evaluations and disparaging commentary.
How did NetEase respond?
NetEase apologized and characterized the agreement’s terms as inappropriate and misleading or excessively restrictive. In a follow-up public statement reported by Ars, the company said: “We actively encourage Creators to share their honest thoughts, suggestions, and criticisms as they play.” It also said it was working on revisions.

PCGamesN reported NetEase’s explanation that the draft agreement aimed to build long-term cooperation with creators and support more meaningful, consistent feedback through deeper collaboration. The company described it as “a draft version aiming for long-term cooperation with the creators who are interested in Marvel Rivals.” That stated aim does not change what the reported language restricted.
NetEase also said in the creator Discord, as reported by Ars: “Our stand is absolutely open for both suggestions and criticisms to improve our games, and… our mission is to make Marvel Rivals better [and] satisfy players by those constructive suggestions.”

Was the agreement actually revised?
The reports document NetEase’s apology and its intention to revise the terms; they do not establish the final revised wording or its effective date. The original executed agreement and a final revised version were not independently reviewed in the cited coverage. It is therefore accurate to say NetEase announced revisions, but not to claim that a particular replacement contract took effect or to describe terms that have not been verified.

Creator agreements can set limits on publication timing, confidential information, or spoilers. Those limits are different from restricting a participant’s opinion of a game. In this case, the controversy arose because the reported clause expressly included subjective negative reviews, rather than only controlling when creators could publish alpha coverage or which details they could reveal.
