Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 Marvel team fighter; Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is a 2v2 Marvel/Capcom crossover. That team-size difference is the clearest distinction. Tōkon also puts a new Marvel story and anime-inspired presentation at the center, while Infinite uses selectable Infinity Stones and a crossover story. The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is different again: it packages seven older arcade games rather than offering one new fighter with a shared roster.

How Tōkon compares at a glance

Feature MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection
What it is A 4v4 tag-team fighter from Arc System Works, PlayStation Studios, and Marvel Games. PlayStation’s announcement describes it as the “ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter.” A 2v2 partner-battle crossover featuring Marvel and Capcom characters, according to PlayStation’s 2017 launch post and Capcom’s product description. A bundle of seven separate arcade titles, not a single game with one shared roster. PlayStation’s collection page lists the included games.
Roster 20 playable characters at launch, according to the official PlayStation game page. PlayStation said 30 characters were available at launch in 2017. That is a historical launch count, not a claim about current availability or roster additions. Seven games with their own rosters; there is no single collection-wide roster count.
Signature distinction Four-character team combat is the confirmed headline format. Choose one of six Infinity Stones—Power, Time, Space, Reality, Mind, or Soul. Each has unique powers that affect battle. Rules and mechanics differ by included game; consult the Capcom collection manual for title-specific details.
Story and presentation An original, game-specific Marvel scenario presented through motion comics and manga illustrations, with voice acting. A cinematic story about the Marvel and Capcom universes merging. Focused on preserving and playing arcade titles, with collection features alongside them.
Platforms PS5 and PC. PlayStation announced an August 6, 2026 release; local launch was August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea. The cited PlayStation launch material is from 2017 and concerns PS4; check current storefronts for present availability. Availability depends on storefront and platform; check the relevant current listing.

Team size changes how the games are framed

Tōkon: four characters on a team

Tōkon’s 4v4 format is its central structural difference from Infinite’s 2v2 setup. Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka says the goal is to let players get into the game without having to master an entire team: “Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game.” Yamanaka’s PlayStation interview presents this as a design aim. It is not independent evidence that Tōkon is objectively easier than Infinite or other fighters.

Infinite: two-character partner battles

Infinite pairs Marvel and Capcom characters in 2v2 battles. It also gives teams a choice of Infinity Stone, adding a selectable power system to the partner format. Those stones are specific to Infinite’s mechanics; they should not be confused with the Infinity Gems in individual older games in the collection.

The collection: rules vary by game

The Fighting Collection is not a single team-format alternative. Its seven titles have their own rules and systems. For example, Capcom’s manual describes Marvel Super Heroes as having an Infinity Gauge and Infinity Gems with effects that include movement speed, armor, projectiles, and healing. Those details apply to that game, not to every title in the bundle.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Tōkon’s story is built for this game

PlayStation describes Tōkon’s Episode Mode as a new scenario written with a Marvel comics writer, adapting its narrative, world, and characters specifically for the game. The story introduces a new threat and brings the X-Men together again. Its presentation combines motion comics, manga illustrations, voice acting in ten languages, and PS5 Tempest 3D AudioTech support. This makes Tōkon’s story mode a clearer part of its identity than the arcade-focused Fighting Collection; Infinite, by contrast, tells a cinematic Marvel/Capcom crossover story.

Do not confuse Tōkon’s beta roster with its launch roster

The official PlayStation game page lists 20 playable characters at launch. The July 2026 open beta had a smaller, beta-specific lineup: the July 16 guide initially listed 15 characters, and a July 23 update added Green Goblin as playable in that beta. Those beta figures are not the full launch roster count. The beta guide also described casual and ranked online matches, local Versus, an open lobby, a Start Up Battle tutorial, Training Mode, and the first three chapters of the Amazing Guardians Episode Mode; those are beta details, so consult the current game listing for the live version’s modes.

  • Look at Infinite if you specifically want a Marvel/Capcom crossover, 2v2 partner battles, and the six-stone selection mechanic. The cited PlayStation launch source is historical, so verify current regional platform listings before assuming it is available to buy.
  • Choose the Fighting Collection if you want several older arcade-era Marvel/Capcom games, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2, rather than a new entry built around one modern format. Its PlayStation page describes online ranked and casual matches, lobbies, co-op, spectating, and rollback netcode.

Platforms, online play, and editions

Tōkon is listed for PS5 and PC. PlayStation’s FAQ says PC players need a PlayStation Account linked to the game for online play. The official game page also says offline gameplay or cinematics can be paused. PlayStation’s February 2026 announcement named Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Ultimate editions; at announcement, Digital Deluxe included a Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass for four additional characters and one stage, while Ultimate added named costumes and a color unlock. Edition contents and live retail listings can change, so check the current platform listing for what is included in your region.
