Most Samsung Galaxy devices cannot be set to install every Google Play game directly onto a removable microSD card. Android and the game developer decide whether an app is movable. If a game is eligible, use Settings → Apps → [game] → Storage → Change → SD card → Move. If Change is missing, keep the game in internal storage and use the card for supported downloads, screenshots, recordings, backups, or other files instead.
Check your Galaxy before buying or formatting a card
Not every Galaxy phone or tablet has a microSD slot. Maximum supported capacity and menu labels vary by exact model, regional edition, carrier firmware, Android release, and One UI version. Check the specifications or support page for your model at Samsung’s SD-card guidance before purchasing a card.

- Store game assets: maps, textures, and expansion downloads may have a game-specific location setting.
- Move user files: screenshots, recordings, videos, backups, and installers can normally be moved with My Files.
- Adopt the card as internal storage: an advanced, device-dependent mode that formats and encrypts the card.
Google Play has no dependable universal “install all apps to SD card” switch on current Galaxy software. Play’s download location, Android’s install location, and a game’s asset location are separate decisions. Practical guidance in the Google Play Help Community reflects this limitation, while Android documents that external installation is optional and controlled partly by each app’s manifest at Install location.

Prepare the microSD card safely
- Back up existing contents. Formatting erases the card.
- Insert it in the tray and let Galaxy recognize it.
- Format it in the phone only after confirming that no needed files remain.
- Leave free space for game updates, temporary files, photos, and system operations.
Portable storage is the normal choice. It works well for media and user files and can generally be moved to another compatible device after unmounting. It does not make every app installable externally.
Move a game when Samsung allows it
Samsung’s supported route is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the game.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Change, if the button appears.
- Choose SD card.
- Tap Move and wait for completion before launching the game.
Samsung describes this process at Freeing storage and moving eligible apps and Using an SD card. Labels can differ slightly by One UI version.
A successful move does not necessarily relocate the whole installation. Android may leave private data, optimized code, native components, caches, or update files in internal storage. Updates can also need temporary internal space. The game remains in your app drawer, but it may stop working while the card is unmounted; Android can kill apps running from external storage.

When the Change button is missing
Treat the missing button as a compatibility result, not a hidden setting to unlock. Common causes include:
- The developer disallowed external installation.
- The Galaxy model or firmware does not expose app migration.
- The game uses protected components unsuitable for removable storage.
- The card is unmounted, faulty, or incompatible.
- The app is preinstalled or otherwise protected.
Formatting the card, moving a shortcut, or using a file manager will not reliably override these rules. Do not manually relocate an installed game’s protected Android/data or Android/obb folders as a general workaround; modern Android restrictions and game validation can cause crashes or redownloads. Samsung notes that an absent Change option usually means the app cannot be moved through the normal interface.
Move screenshots, recordings, and other game files
My Files is appropriate for ordinary, user-accessible files—not for converting an internally installed game into an SD installation.

- Open My Files.
- Find the file or folder and touch and hold it.
- Tap Move or Copy.
- Return to the My Files home screen and tap SD card.
- Open or create a destination folder.
- Tap Move here or Copy here.
Good candidates include screenshots, screen recordings, downloaded trailers, legally owned emulator files, exported save backups, archived installers, and other media. Samsung’s file-management instructions are available at My Files and external storage and How to find and manage files.
Game downloads and expansion data are title-specific
Some games expose a Settings, Download, Resources, Storage, or Data location selector. Check the game’s own menu and support documentation. Changing the location may require a restart or a complete redownload.
If no such control exists, assume the game keeps its assets in app-private storage. Moving an APK, visible folder, or home-screen shortcut does not change that behavior. Android explains the limits of app-specific external files at App-specific storage; removable files can become unavailable when the card is removed.

Portable versus adopted storage
Portable storage
This is the ordinary removable-card mode for photos, videos, documents, backups, and supported game files. It preserves portability and does not automatically expand app capacity.
Adopted storage
Android’s adopted-storage feature formats and encrypts a card so it behaves more like internal storage and becomes tied to one device. Supported apps may use it, but manufacturers can restrict or hide the feature; it is not a guaranteed Samsung solution. Android’s implementation details are documented at AOSP adopted storage.
- Formatting is destructive.
- The card cannot be freely moved between devices afterward.
- Removing it makes dependent apps and data unavailable.
- A slow or unreliable card can cause poor performance or corruption.
Do not use ADB commands to force adoption without exact device-specific evidence and a recovery plan. For most Galaxy owners, portable storage plus internal-space management is safer.

Choose a card for compatibility and reliability
- Capacity: stay within Samsung’s documented maximum for the exact model and allow room for updates and non-game media.
- Performance: favor a genuine card with an Application Performance Class where available and UHS-I compatibility. Random access matters for games; advertised sequential speed is not the whole story.
- Authenticity: buy from the manufacturer or an authorized retailer. Suspiciously cheap high-capacity cards may be counterfeit.
- Durability: keep backups, unmount before removal, and replace cards that disconnect, report corruption, or alter files.
Samsung EVO Select or PRO Plus, SanDisk Ultra or Extreme, and Kingston Canvas ranges are examples to compare on their official pages: Samsung memory cards, SanDisk microSD cards, and Kingston microSD cards. Verify capacity compatibility first. Even a faster card will not make every game as responsive as internal UFS storage.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The card is not detected
- Power off the Galaxy and reseat the card.
- Inspect the tray and card for damage.
- Open Settings → Device care → Storage, or search Settings for “SD card.”
- Test the card in another compatible reader without formatting if its data matters.
- Back up recoverable files, then format only after confirming nothing important remains.
- Replace the card if it repeatedly disappears.
The game will not move
Recheck Settings → Apps → game → Storage. If Change is absent, keep the game internal, look for an in-game download-location setting, move ordinary files, uninstall unused titles, or clear caches through Device Care.
Little space was recovered
Private data, split packages, caches, optimized components, and update files can remain internal. This is expected and does not necessarily mean the move failed.

The game crashes or redownloads data
- Move it back to internal storage if available.
- Restart the device.
- Check the card for errors and free space.
- Update the game and Galaxy software.
- Back up or verify synchronized progress before uninstalling.
- Reinstall internally if the title remains unstable.
The card becomes corrupted
Stop writing to it, copy readable files elsewhere, and avoid repeated formatting attempts. Use the game’s cloud-sync or account recovery where available, then replace the card if corruption returns.

- Uninstall unused games and clear caches (not app data unless progress is backed up).
- Move photos, recordings, offline video, and music to the card or a computer.

- Use cloud saves or streaming where the title and service support them.
- Choose a device with more internal storage when your library is large and no games expose Change.
