The right PS5 headset setup depends on how it connects. PlayStation Link and other wireless models normally need their dedicated USB adapter, a wired headset can use the DualSense 3.5 mm jack, and a USB headset connects directly to the console. Ordinary third-party Bluetooth-only headsets generally cannot pair directly with PS5. Once connected, configure output and microphone separately under Settings > Sound, then calibrate 3D Audio if you want to use it.
Before you connect anything
Check these points first:
- Charge the headset, or connect it to power if its model permits use while charging.
- Identify whether it is PlayStation Link, USB wireless, USB wired, analog 3.5 mm, or Bluetooth-only.
- Find the correct wireless adapter. A USB charging cable is not necessarily a wireless adapter.
- Keep the headset near the PS5 and remove obvious obstructions between the console adapter and headset.
- Update the PS5, headset, and adapter firmware where the manufacturer provides updates.
- Remember that headset volume, PS5 volume, and microphone mute are separate controls.
Menu names can vary slightly by PS5 system software, region, headset type, and firmware.
Identify the connection method
| Headset type | Normal PS5 connection | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Link, such as PULSE Elite or PULSE Explore | Included PlayStation Link USB adapter | The included adapter is normally paired out of the box. |
| Older PlayStation wireless, such as PULSE 3D, Gold, or Platinum | Supplied USB wireless adapter | Compatibility depends on the exact model. |
| Third-party wireless | Manufacturer-supplied PS5-compatible USB adapter | A Bluetooth label alone does not establish PS5 compatibility. |
| Wired headset | DualSense 3.5 mm jack | A four-conductor cable is required for microphone chat. |
| USB wired headset | Compatible PS5 USB port | USB headset support remains model-specific. |
Sony’s pairing guidance and official compatibility list are at PlayStation Support.

Sony lists these PS5-compatible PlayStation models: PULSE Elite (CFI-ZWH2, CFI-ZWA2, CFI-ZPH2), PULSE 3D (CFI-ZWH1, CFI-ZWD1), Gold (CUHYA-0080, CECHYA-0083), and Platinum (CECHYA-0090). For third-party products, use the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility statement.
A USB wireless headset must use its console-compatible dongle. A USB cable used only for charging will not necessarily carry audio.
Connect a wired headset
3.5 mm through the DualSense
- Plug the headset into the controller’s 3.5 mm jack.
- Press the PS button and open Control Center > Sound.
- Confirm the headset is the output device and set headphone volume.
- Open Control Center > Mic and select the headset microphone if needed.
For microphone chat, use a four-conductor (TRRS) cable with compatible wiring. A three-conductor cable can provide listening only. PULSE Elite cable details are documented at PlayStation Support.
USB wired
- Plug the headset into a compatible PS5 USB port.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Select the headset under Output Device if it was not selected automatically.
- Use the Control Center’s Mic panel to select its microphone.
Most USB and analog headsets are supported in principle, but Sony says compatibility varies by device.

Why Bluetooth-only headsets usually fail
PS5 does not generally accept ordinary third-party Bluetooth audio headsets directly. A headset may use Bluetooth with a phone while requiring a dedicated USB wireless transmitter for PS5. PlayStation Link is a separate wireless technology, not a synonym for Bluetooth. Sony’s FAQ distinguishes unsupported third-party Bluetooth headsets from generally supported USB and analog devices: PS5 Ultimate FAQ.
Configure PS5 game and chat audio
- Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the headset under Output Device.
- Enable Switch Output Device Automatically if you want PS5 to change outputs when the headset connects.
- Check Output to Headphones and choose the intended routing, such as game audio, voice chat, or both.
- Adjust Settings > Sound > Volume > Headphones, or use Control Center > Sound.
If the television still plays sound, verify that HDMI is not the selected output. Available options such as sidetone, EQ, microphone controls, and audio formats depend on the connected device. Sony’s current menu reference is PS5 audio output settings.
Set up the microphone and voice chat
- Press the PS button and select Mic.
- Choose Input Device and select the headset microphone.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level.
- Speak normally and adjust until the meter reaches the Good range.
- Check the headset mute button, DualSense mute button, detachable microphone, or retractable boom.
PS5 also lets you choose whether the microphone stays in its current state or starts muted when you log in or begin a voice chat or broadcast. Party-chat and in-game-chat controls can mute one another independently.

Calibrate 3D Audio and choose EQ
PS5 performs the 3D-audio processing; the headset does not need a special “3D chip.” Connect the headset first, then open the 3D Audio setup in the PS5’s Settings > Sound area and follow the listening and height-adjustment prompts.

Update the headset and adapter
For PULSE Elite, use Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update. PS Link updates may also arrive with PS5 system-software updates. On Windows, the PlayStation Link PC Driver can update supported devices and expose additional settings. Check updates before attempting a factory-style reset.

PULSE Elite will not pair
- Confirm the adapter is in a USB Type-A port.
- Power-cycle the headset and check for another nearby paired device.
- Update the headset and adapter.
- Hold the headset’s PS Link button for at least 10 seconds to reset it. This preserves pairings and audio settings.
- If necessary, perform the two approximately eight-second holds that wipe PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings.
- Reset the adapter by holding its button for 30 seconds.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPopping or crackling
For PULSE Elite, stop using the headset, turn it off, and leave it in a well-ventilated area for 10–15 minutes if moisture exposure is possible. Do not use a hair dryer, fan, or forced-drying method. Store it somewhere dry. Persistent noise after this procedure warrants manufacturer support.
Only one PULSE Explore earbud works
Return both earbuds to the charging case, confirm both are seated and charged, leave the adapter connected, then remove both earbuds together. A single earbud may be unseated, depleted, or not connected.
Sound is too quiet
Check the headset’s physical control, Settings > Sound > Volume > Headphones, Control Center volume, and game settings. Also check any game/chat balance control. On PULSE Elite, the headset control changes PlayStation Link audio; Bluetooth-device volume is controlled by the connected mobile device.
When to reset—and when not to
| Action | Use it when | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Power cycle | Audio, detection, or temporary wireless glitches occur. | Turns the connection off and on without deleting settings. |
| PULSE Elite 10-second PS Link-button reset | The headset will not connect after simpler checks. | Preserves pairings and audio settings. |
| Two approximately eight-second headset holds | Pairings or stored audio settings appear corrupted. | Deletes PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. |
| 30-second adapter-button reset | The USB adapter itself will not establish a connection. | Clears PS Link connections; use a timer. |
Which connection is best for your situation?
| Priority | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Simplest official wireless setup | PlayStation Link headset with its included adapter. |
| Lowest cost and no battery | Compatible 3.5 mm headset through the DualSense. |
| No controller cable | PS5-compatible USB wireless headset. |
| PS5 and phone audio | A headset that supports PlayStation Link plus Bluetooth; features vary by model. |
| Competitive tuning | A comfortable headset with a reliable microphone, stable wireless connection, and adjustable EQ. |
Buying a headset with a “3D” label does not guarantee a better result. Compatibility, fit, microphone quality, comfort, and connection stability matter more than branding alone.
