Masters of Albion’s first major update, New Beginnings, arrived on October 1, 2026, and substantially reworks the Early Access game’s opening, performance, progression, town economy, and night combat. Those changes make a return more appealing, but “the old god game magic is back” is a hopeful verdict, not a settled fact: the game is still evolving, the performance gains are a developer claim, and version 2.0 requires a fresh save.
What is New Beginnings, and why does it matter?
Masters of Albion is a single-player god game and strategy simulation from 22cans. It entered Steam Early Access on April 22, 2026. New Beginnings is the first major update and is identified by the developer as version 2.0; the previous public branch was version 1.4. The update’s significance is its breadth: instead of adding only a new activity, it revisits several systems that shape the experience from the opening onward. Steam’s listing identifies the game as Early Access, while 22cans’ New Beginnings announcement details the changes.
What changed in version 2.0?
A new opening outside Oakridge
The journey now begins outside Oakridge, with an expanded prologue about the Chosen One’s origins. 22cans says the opening adds places to explore, choices, and lore, giving returning players a different introduction rather than simply dropping them back into the previous start.
Orders and making products are more legible
Random orders above the Dispatch have been replaced by structured job series connected to Order Givers’ stories. The redesigned Design Table shows production costs, potential profit, customer requirements, and alignment, making it easier to judge what a product will involve before committing resources. Completing orders unlocks part packs; higher-tier parts can also come from night rewards or be found in the world.

Night threats have clearer objectives
The update adds a corruption system and reshapes night encounters around briefings and objectives. Depending on the encounter, players may need to defeat a set number of enemies, survive for a limited time, or escort worshippers. Scoring and reward cards are also part of the changes. The new structure gives nights more explicit goals, though how much variety and pressure it delivers in repeated play is a matter for players to judge over time.
Progression and world interaction are reworked
22cans describes progression as card-based and says there are more ways to interact with Albion and its people. Alongside the revised Orders and product systems, these changes aim to make building and managing the world feel more connected to the game’s longer-term goals.

Did the update fix performance?
22cans says it moved the game to a more efficient rendering system and rebuilt or converted every in-game asset. The studio reports “up to double the frame rate” in its own tests, while warning that results vary with hardware, resolution, and graphics settings. That is a developer-reported maximum, not a guarantee for every PC or an independently verified benchmark. The practical test is whether the new build runs better on your own system.
Do you have to restart your save?
Yes, if you want to play version 2.0: version 1.4 saves cannot be loaded into New Beginnings. At launch, 22cans said the public 1.4 Steam branch would remain available for one month so players could continue existing saves. That stated window is time-sensitive; check the game’s Steam branches before relying on access to 1.4, and preserve your existing save if continuing it matters to you.

Is Masters of Albion worth returning to?
If the earlier version felt too rough or repetitive, New Beginnings addresses several of the most consequential areas: the studio says it rebuilt the rendering pipeline, while the update changes progression, orders, product creation, and the structure of night encounters. That is meaningful evidence of a broader rework, not proof that every weakness is fixed. PC Gamer characterized the first release as an “initial sketch” and noted the challenge of combining multiple genres; the update’s breadth responds to that kind of concern, but the quality and balance of the revised systems still need to be experienced in play.
My verdict is cautiously enthusiastic: the update gives the game a more substantial foundation and a stronger reason to take another look. Whether the old god-game appeal has truly returned depends on how the new systems hold up in a full playthrough—and on whether you are comfortable starting over in a game that remains in Early Access. Valve’s store notice puts that status plainly: “Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further.” 22cans likewise says it will continue improving the game after this update.

How the Steam reception looks at launch
On October 3, 2026, Steam showed 64% positive from 615 all-time reviews and 63% positive from 11 recent reviews. These are a dated storefront snapshot, and the recent score rests on a small sample; neither should be treated as a stable verdict on version 2.0.
