Marcus Sasser is catching Mavericks coach Dusty May’s attention with the plays that do not always show up in a box score. May has praised Sasser’s cutting and contributions away from the ball, along with his shooting, decision-making and defensive effort. That is a positive camp evaluation—not confirmation that Sasser has secured a regular role.
What May has noticed about Sasser
May’s praise centers on Sasser’s ability to help a possession even when he is not handling the ball. As RotoWire reported on October 1, 2026, May said he had been impressed by Sasser’s cutting and his work when he was not directly involved in the play. He also pointed to “hidden plays” that help the team function.
May described Sasser’s shooting and decision-making as sound, and said the staff expects strong defensive effort given Sasser’s Houston background. Those are the coach’s assessments, not independently measured performance data. Taken together, they explain why a guard can make a favorable impression without dominating possessions: move purposefully, make sound choices, be ready to shoot and work on defense.
Why the role is still unsettled
Sasser is competing for a Mavericks bench role ahead of the 2026–27 season. The camp praise signals that May values what he has seen; it does not establish a final depth chart, a backup point guard job or a regular rotation spot. The available reporting does not settle Sasser’s playing time or roster status.

His previous-season numbers provide context, not a forecast
RotoWire reported that Sasser appeared in 38 regular-season games for Detroit in the prior season. His NBA.com player profile lists averages of 5.2 points, 1.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Those figures describe his prior-season production; they do not predict what his role or output will be in Dallas.
A Texas return adds a personal dimension
Sasser joined Dallas after being traded from Detroit, returning to Texas, as NBA.com’s 2026 Media Day recap noted. At Media Day, he described his own game this way: “I can self-create, shoot the ball well, defend at a high level, push the pace — just an energy bunny. Changing the game with a lot of momentum. Yeah, that’s me.” That is Sasser’s self-description, while May’s camp comments offer the coach’s separate view of how he is contributing.
