mbmio.dll is an obsolete third-party file used by Motherboard Monitor 5 and some older utilities, including CoolMon. If Windows reports that mbmio.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair the complete application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this three-point check
Before changing Windows, identify the program behind the error:
- Which program shows the message? Check the error dialog, Task Manager, Startup Apps, Event Viewer, or the shortcut you used.
- When does it happen? Note whether it appears during Windows startup, when launching CoolMon, Motherboard Monitor, Orthos, or another old monitoring or stress-testing utility.
- Is the program 32-bit?
mbmio.dllis reported as a Win32 file. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its supporting files and old hardware drivers must still match.
Also ask what changed immediately before the problem:
- Was the program moved to another folder?
- Was it copied from another computer?
- Was it restored from a backup?
- Was it partially uninstalled?
- Did antivirus software quarantine a file?
- Is the application missing its
DLLordllsubfolder?
Those answers often identify the cause faster than Windows repair commands.

What mbmio.dll belongs to
mbmio.dll is associated with the MBMIO Dynamic Link Library component of Motherboard Monitor 5, a discontinued utility created for motherboard temperatures, voltages, fan speeds, and other hardware sensors. Public file information describes it as “MBMIO DLL” and associates the file with Chris St. Amand, although this is historical metadata rather than a current vendor specification.
The file is commonly reported as an older 32-bit Windows DLL. It is not a normal Windows component and should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Older installations commonly kept it in an application-specific folder similar to:
C:Program FilesMotherboard Monitor 5DLL
CoolMon integrations historically used a dll folder inside CoolMon’s own installation directory. The exact folder depends on the program requesting the file.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete parent application
This is the most likely solution when the error started after moving, copying, extracting, or reinstalling a legacy utility.
If the program still appears in Installed apps
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find Motherboard Monitor, CoolMon, or the utility named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete original application package.
- Launch the program from its installed folder rather than from an old shortcut.
Windows may offer a Repair or Modify option instead of, or before, uninstalling. Use it if available.
Do not delete the only copy of the installer until you have confirmed that the replacement works. Motherboard Monitor is discontinued, and its original distribution site is not a dependable current support source. Use an installer whose provenance you trust, scan it before running it, and avoid mixing files from different MBM releases or unrelated DLL packages.
Check the installation layout
After reinstalling, open the application folder and look for:
Motherboard Monitor 5DLL
or, for CoolMon:
CoolMondll
The executable and its supporting folders should remain together. Do not copy only the EXE from an archive while leaving the DLL folder behind.

To test the folder directly:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Confirm that the expected
DLLordllfolder exists. - Check that
mbmio.dllis inside the folder used by that program. - Start the application from that location.
If the error disappears, the original problem was an incomplete installation or an incorrect file layout.
Correct a bad shortcut working directory
Some old programs search for supporting files relative to their executable or current working directory.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Confirm that Target points to the real installed EXE.
- Check the Start in field, if present.
- Set Start in to the application’s installation folder.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program again.
If there is no Start in field, create a new shortcut from the actual EXE in the installation directory.
Fix 2: Repair CoolMon’s own DLL folder
CoolMon and similar desktop-monitoring add-ons may depend on MBM but search their own folders for supporting libraries.
If CoolMon reports the missing file while Motherboard Monitor works:
- Close CoolMon and Motherboard Monitor.
- Open CoolMon’s installation folder.
- Look for a folder named
dll,DLL, or a similarly named support folder. - Restore the complete CoolMon package if that folder is missing.
- Confirm that the application’s own supporting files are together.
- Start Motherboard Monitor first if CoolMon depends on its sensor service or configuration.
- Start CoolMon afterward.
Do not assume that a working MBM installation automatically repairs CoolMon. The add-on may expect its own copy or its own relative folder structure.
If the program requires Motherboard Monitor to be installed and configured, restoring mbmio.dll alone will not be sufficient. The utility may fail later while loading the MBM driver or attempting to read sensors.

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL, particularly when the file is from discontinued software. A quarantine entry does not, by itself, prove that the file is malicious or safe.
Check Protection History
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry referring to the application folder or
mbmio.dll.
If the file was quarantined, first establish that the original installer and application are trustworthy. Prefer reinstalling from a complete, trusted application package instead of restoring an isolated DLL.

If you restore a quarantined file:
- Confirm that it came from the original application installation.
- Scan the complete installer and affected folder.
- Restore only if you understand the detection and trust the file’s source.
- Reinstall the parent application if the detection remains unclear.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how quarantined items are handled.
Never download a replacement from a random DLL website. Such files can contain malware, use the wrong version or architecture, or be incomplete dependencies. A filename alone cannot prove that a DLL is genuine.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
mbmio.dll is reported as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That normally means it belongs with a 32-bit application, even if Windows itself is 64-bit.
To check the application architecture:
- Start the affected program if possible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Check whether the process is listed as 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process may be marked with a suffix such as (32 bit).
A 32-bit application can generally run on 64-bit Windows through WoW64. However, old monitoring software may also rely on a kernel-level driver or hardware access method that modern Windows no longer supports reliably.
Use the complete matching release of the parent application. Do not combine:
- Files from different Motherboard Monitor releases
- A CoolMon DLL with an MBM installation without the required supporting files
- Files from unrelated applications
- A DLL copied from another computer without verifying the complete package
If the error changes from “missing DLL” to a driver or sensor-access error, the DLL may have been restored successfully but the old hardware interface may no longer be compatible.
Fix 5: Use the program’s repair or file-verification feature
If the application came from a launcher or software manager, use that program’s repair function instead of manually replacing the DLL.
Typical steps are:
- Open the launcher.
- Find the installed application.
- Open its menu or settings.
- Choose Repair, Verify files, Scan and repair, or equivalent.
- Wait for the verification to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the affected program again.
The exact label varies by launcher. A verification process should restore the application’s expected folder structure and dependencies. If it reports that the program is unsupported or no longer available, remove the incomplete copy and obtain a complete installer from a source you trust.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall the related hardware driver
Motherboard Monitor is old hardware-monitoring software. Even with the correct DLL, it may fail when its sensor driver cannot load.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing System devices, Other devices, or hardware-monitoring entries.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the device is clearly associated with the old utility and is no longer needed:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the parent application only if you still need it.
Do not install a modern motherboard driver simply because the error mentions a DLL. Identify the hardware first and use the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s current driver package.
If manually checking device models and driver versions is taking longer than the application is worth, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the legacy application remains the definitive fix for an incomplete mbmio.dll installation.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for wider Windows corruption
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate mbmio.dll, because this is a third-party application file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use them when you are also seeing damaged Windows features, failed system components, or multiple unrelated Windows errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The supported sequence is described in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
If both commands complete successfully but mbmio.dll is still missing, return to the parent application’s installer. Repeating SFC will not repair an absent third-party DLL.
When manually tracking component corruption and repeating repair commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan Windows and show reported problems; its free scan identifies issues, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application is still the correct fix when only mbmio.dll is missing.
Fix 8: Try System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a driver installation, software removal, or other system change. It is not a substitute for reinstalling a missing application.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the application.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.

Why copying mbmio.dll to System32 is usually wrong
Windows uses different search and redirection rules for 32-bit and 64-bit programs. The names System32 and SysWOW64 are also counterintuitive on 64-bit Windows, so placing a file in either directory because an error mentions Windows can create further conflicts.

Restore the file through the parent application’s installer and preserve its original subfolder structure.
Why regsvr32 is not the normal fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains its purpose in the regsvr32 command documentation.
There is no reliable evidence that mbmio.dll is a COM or ActiveX component requiring registration. Its historical role is an application-local hardware-monitoring library. Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
regsvr32 mbmio.dll
If you see “cannot register mbmio.dll,” that usually means the wrong repair method was used, the file is not a registration-based DLL, or the command was run from the wrong folder. Registration will not place a missing file into the application directory or restore a missing dependency.
When to remove the old utility instead
Motherboard Monitor is discontinued and very old. Modern Windows and newer hardware may not support its driver or sensor interface, even after a successful reinstall.
If you no longer need the utility:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Uninstall Motherboard Monitor, CoolMon, or the related utility.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an orphaned startup entry.
- Check Task Scheduler only if the program continues attempting to start.
- Restart Windows.
Use caution when removing unknown startup entries. Confirm the executable path before disabling or deleting anything.
A maintained hardware-monitoring application is usually safer and more practical than forcing an obsolete sensor utility to work. If another program still needs MBMIO, identify that program first rather than deleting files blindly.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Final diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything, confirm all of the following:
- The error identifies the exact executable that requests
mbmio.dll. - The complete parent application has been repaired or reinstalled.
- The application’s
DLLordllsubfolder is present. - The shortcut points to the real installation folder.
- CoolMon’s own folder has been checked if CoolMon is involved.
- Windows Security Protection History has been reviewed.
- The restored file came from a complete, trusted application package.
- The 32-bit application and its supporting files match.
- Any related legacy driver has been checked in Device Manager.
- DISM and SFC were used only for broader Windows corruption.
System32,SysWOW64, andregsvr32were not used as generic DLL fixes.- The utility is still needed and compatible with the current PC.
If the error persists, the filename alone is not enough to diagnose it. Record the exact application name, full executable path, complete error text, and whether mbmio.dll is present in that application’s expected folder. That information distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency, a bad working directory, a quarantined file, or an obsolete driver that can no longer access the hardware.
