Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe mdimon.dll error may appear as “The file Mdimon.dll is missing,” “Mdimon.dll not found,” or “This application failed to start because Mdimon.dll was not found.” The file belongs to Microsoft Office Document Imaging, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Office component that originally provided it.
Do not download an isolated copy of mdimon.dll and place it in System32 or `SysWOW64. The file is a legacy Microsoft Office DLL, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component. The correct repair depends mainly on which Office edition the affected computer has installed.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to identify the right path before changing anything:
- Office 2003 or Office 2007 is installed: Use the original Office installer or cached setup files to add Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
- Office 2007 is installed, but the error began after an update, cleanup, or failed setup: Use Office 2007’s feature-change or repair workflow, then reinstall the missing feature if necessary.
- Office 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, or Microsoft 365 is installed: MODI is not included in the same integrated way. Repairing newer Office may fix other Office files, but it will not add a component that edition does not contain.
- The error appeared after antivirus action: Check Windows Security Protection history. Restore the file only after verifying its location and trustworthiness.
- The program is a packaged legacy application: Verify or repair that application first. It may be expecting a private copy of the DLL or another dependency.
- The program is 32-bit: Confirm that the Office installation and dependencies match the application’s architecture. Do not solve an architecture problem by copying a random DLL.
- The failure involves the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer: Treat the printer driver as a separate compatibility issue. The MODI application can be present while the old printer component still fails, particularly on 64-bit Windows.
- You only need OCR,
.mdiconversion, or image-to-text conversion: Migration is usually safer than rebuilding the complete MODI stack on a modern computer.
What mdimon.dll is
mdimon.dll is identified as Microsoft® Document Imaging and is associated with Microsoft Office Document Imaging, or MODI. Microsoft Corporation is identified as the publisher in public file metadata.

MODI was an Office tool for working with scanned documents and document images. Depending on the installation, users may have relied on it to:
- Open or process
.mdifiles - Run OCR on scanned pages
- Convert document images
- Use the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer
- Support an older application that calls MODI components directly
It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, graphics-driver file, or general Windows DLL. A normal Windows installation does not need mdimon.dll simply because it runs Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Public metadata describes the file as a 32-bit Windows DLL, but Microsoft does not publish a complete authoritative table of supported mdimon.dll versions, sizes, checksums, or architecture combinations. The filename alone is not enough to prove that a copy is genuine.
Which Office editions included MODI
MODI is primarily associated with legacy Office installations, especially Office 2003 and Office 2007. Office 2007 could install it as an optional Office feature through Setup.
Office 2010 and later did not include MODI as the same integrated Office feature. That includes later perpetual Office releases and Microsoft 365 installations. As a result, installing a newer Office edition does not necessarily provide the DLL, even if an old program still expects it.
Microsoft-hosted guidance about MODI availability is available in the Microsoft Q&A discussion about MODI in later Office versions.
Office edition and installer type matter. A 32-bit Office 2007 installation, a 64-bit Windows installation, and an application compiled for a particular Office path can have different compatibility requirements. Office 2007’s MODI application and the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer are also separate concerns. The application may run while the old printer driver does not.
Fix 1: Add MODI through Office 2007 Setup
This is the most likely fix when the computer still has a legitimate Office 2003 or Office 2007 installation and mdimon.dll was never installed or was removed.
You may need the original Office media, an installation image, or cached Office setup files. Use the installer that matches the installed edition and license.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, select the installed Microsoft Office 2007 edition.
- Click Change.
- Choose Add or Remove Features.
- Continue to the feature-selection screen.
- Expand Office Tools.
- Select Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
- Choose Run all from My Computer.
- Continue through Setup.
- Restart Windows if Setup requests it.
The feature-selection path is also described in Microsoft-hosted Office Document Imaging installation guidance.
After restarting, launch the program that produced the error. If it opens without the DLL message, the Office feature was restored successfully.
If Setup asks for a source file, provide the original Office installation media or a legitimate cached setup location. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from a file-indexing site. If the installer cannot find the required source, use a genuine installation package for the same Office edition or move to a supported replacement workflow.
Fix 2: Repair the existing Office installation
Use Office repair when mdimon.dll was present previously, the error began after Office repair or migration, or other Office components are also malfunctioning.
Repair current Office or Microsoft 365
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or the installed Microsoft Office package.
- Click the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow Office to complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
Online Repair can replace damaged Office files and correct the installation. It cannot add MODI to an Office edition that never included it.
Repair MSI-based Office
Some older Office installations expose repair through Control Panel:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Complete the wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Microsoft’s current Office repair instructions distinguish between repair methods used by different Office installation types.
If repair finishes but the error remains, return to the Office feature-selection screen and explicitly set Microsoft Office Document Imaging to Run all from My Computer, where that feature is available.
Fix 3: Decide whether newer Office can provide MODI
If the machine runs Office 2010 or a newer release, do not keep trying to restore mdimon.dll through random file copies. The missing component may simply not belong to that Office edition.
You have three safer paths:
- Keep a properly licensed compatible legacy installation in an isolated environment for the old workflow.
- Migrate the workflow to a current OCR, scanning, PDF, or document-management application.
- Repair the legacy application itself if it was packaged with its own compatible Office components.
Microsoft still lists a SharePoint Designer 2010 download, but that page does not prove that the package is a supported MODI solution for every current version of Windows or Office. It also identifies the download as a 32-bit package and includes compatibility warnings for 64-bit Office. Do not present it as a universal replacement.
Office 2007 itself is legacy software. Microsoft’s Office SharePoint Designer 2007 lifecycle information shows that product support has ended. A legacy installation may be necessary for a specific business workflow, but it should be planned and controlled rather than assembled from individual DLL files.

Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A legitimate Office DLL can disappear if antivirus software identifies it incorrectly, but a suspicious copy should not be restored merely because an old application wants it.
To inspect Microsoft Defender history:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the relevant detection to see its path and action.
- Compare the path with the known Office installation location.
- Confirm that the file came from genuine Office media or an existing trusted installation.
- Restore it only when the detection is independently confirmed to be a false positive.
Microsoft explains these controls in its Protection history guidance.
If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, stop restoring it. Run a full system scan and reinstall Office from genuine media. Do not create an exclusion just to suppress an uncertain detection. A file named mdimon.dll outside an expected Office directory may be a tampered or malicious copy.
Fix 5: Check the application and Office architecture
A 32-bit program generally needs compatible 32-bit dependencies. This does not mean that copying a 32-bit DLL into a Windows system directory is correct. Windows loader behavior, Office installation paths, registry entries, and other dependencies all affect whether the application can load the component.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the following:
- Is the calling program 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the installed Office edition 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was Office recently removed and replaced with a different architecture?
- Is the program expecting a specific Office installation path?
- Does the error identify
mdimon.dll, or is another module named in Event Viewer? - Is the file located under the Office installation rather than in a random download folder?
You can inspect the application’s error details in Event Viewer:
- Press Win+R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Open the event and record the faulting application, faulting module, and exception information.
Do not infer an exact required DLL build from the filename. Microsoft does not publish a complete authoritative architecture and version matrix for mdimon.dll.
If the Image Writer is the actual problem
If MODI opens but the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer is missing or unusable, the issue may be the legacy printer driver rather than mdimon.dll.

Installing the DLL will not repair a printer-driver compatibility problem.
If a different printer or scanner driver is failing, use Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver intended for the exact device and Windows architecture.
- If the device recently stopped working after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers when Device Manager leaves you comparing many device entries; its free scan shows what it detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace MODI or fix a missing Office-owned DLL.

Because mdimon.dll belongs to Office rather than Windows, DISM and SFC are secondary checks. They are appropriate when Windows itself is reporting component corruption, several unrelated system files are failing, or Office repair is affected by broader operating-system damage.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Office repair or MODI application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions if either command reports an error.
A successful SFC scan does not prove that mdimon.dll exists. It may correctly report that protected Windows files are intact while an Office-owned DLL remains missing.
Repeatedly running DISM and SFC will not install MODI. If both commands complete successfully and the error remains, return to Office Setup and repair or reinstall the Office feature.
When manually comparing Windows component health, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies instead of requiring repeated SFC and DISM runs without knowing what changed; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected Office or legacy application remains the definitive fix when its files are missing.

Fix 7: Use System Restore only for a recent regression
System Restore can help when mdimon.dll worked recently and a restore point predates an Office change, cleanup operation, or driver installation. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Office and does not guarantee recovery of every application file.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Click Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system state and monitored files, not personal documents. Microsoft describes its behavior in the System Restore documentation.
If no suitable restore point exists, cancel the wizard and repair Office instead. Do not remove personal files or reset Windows merely because one legacy Office DLL is missing.
Why DLL download and regsvr32 advice fails
Downloading mdimon.dll from a random DLL repository creates several risks:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- Its version may not match the installed Office build.
- Its architecture may not match the calling application.
- It may require other missing Office files.
- Windows and Office may still lack the required registry or installer configuration.
- Placing it in
System32,SysWOW64, or the application folder may create conflicts. - The original cause, such as a damaged Office installation, remains unresolved.
The safe sources are the original licensed Office installer, a legitimate cached Office installation source, or Microsoft’s supported Office repair workflow. If a packaged legacy application supplied the component, repair or reinstall that application from its legitimate installer.
Do not use this as a general fix:
regsvr32 mdimon.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair Office Setup, or fix ordinary load dependencies. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool in its regsvr32 command reference.
If the command reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that result does not establish that registration was needed. Reinstall the owning Office feature instead.
If reinstalling MODI still does not work
Capture the details before making further changes:
- The complete error text
- The executable that displays the error
- The installed Office edition and installer type
- Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The Windows version and system architecture
- The path of any existing
mdimon.dll - The Event Viewer faulting application and module
- Any recent antivirus detection
- Whether the failure involves
.mdifiles, OCR, or the Image Writer
If the message names another faulting module, the visible mdimon.dll message may be secondary. The actual failure can be a missing dependency, an incompatible application architecture, a damaged Office installation, or an application that was never designed for the current Windows environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a business-critical workflow, preserve the original installer and license information, document the working Office architecture, and test the legacy application separately from ordinary daily-use software. If the workflow only requires OCR or conversion, migrate the documents and process to a supported tool rather than maintaining an obsolete imaging stack indefinitely.
FAQ
Is mdimon.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Office Document Imaging, a legacy Office component. It is not a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 DLL.
Can I download mdimon.dll to fix the error?
No. A standalone download can be malicious, mismatched, or incomplete. Restore the owning Office feature from legitimate installation media or repair the application that supplied it.
Does Microsoft 365 include MODI?
Microsoft 365 does not include MODI in the same integrated way as legacy Office installations. Office repair cannot add a component that the installed edition does not contain.
Which Office versions installed MODI?
MODI is associated mainly with Office 2003 and Office 2007. Office 2007 could install it through Office Setup. Office 2010 and later do not provide it as the same integrated feature.
Will SFC restore mdimon.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Since mdimon.dll is an Office-owned file, Office repair or feature installation is the appropriate first step.
Should I run regsvr32 mdimon.dll?
Not as a general repair. Registration does not restore a missing DLL and may not apply to this component.
Why does the application still fail after I copied the DLL?
The copy may be the wrong build or architecture, or the application may need other Office components and installer configuration. Remove the unofficial copy and repair or reinstall the legitimate Office feature.
Is the file safe if it is named mdimon.dll?
The filename alone proves nothing. Check whether it came from a genuine Office installation, whether its path is expected, and whether antivirus has reported it. If its origin is uncertain, do not restore or execute it.
Can Office 2007 MODI run on 64-bit Windows?
The MODI application may work in some 64-bit Windows configurations, but the Document Image Writer has separate compatibility limitations. Confirm the application and Office architecture before troubleshooting the printer component.
What is the best fix if I only need OCR?
Use a current OCR or document-conversion workflow when possible. Rebuilding MODI is appropriate only when a specific legacy application or .mdi archive still requires it.
